I didn't go upstairs, but used the beershop twice over my weekend stop over in Cork.

They stock over 290 different beers, that is a huge amount for a beer shop in Ireland I believe.

The whole Weihenstephaner range was available, including the Vitus, a host of other German brews, Belgian, US and British too. A bit light on Irish beers, but to be honest, there aren't too many to stock.

Large glass fronted fridges held some beers the rest on shelves, plenty of lagers/pilsners to choose from if that's your bag.

I'd have been lost without this place, my nightcaps alone in the hotel being a semi-highlight of my stay.

The Abbot Ale House is a recent (latter end of 2008) addition to the Cork beer scene as a beer bar. It has been in existence for some years as a well respected off licence shop. The bar is located upstairs over the existing shop.

They have five beers on tap; two "regulars" Rebel Red (Franciscan Well), Bavaria Lager, and three rotating; currently Wiehenstephaner Hefeweissbier, Wiehenstephaner Vitus and Vedette Wit.

There is a wide selection of bottled beers (UK, Belgian, US, German) and basically, if they have it in the shop downstairs, you can bring it upstairs and drink it for the "drink in" price.

The place is decorated with plenty of breweriana (beer mats, posters etc.), and although it is small, it is fairly atmospheric.

It is also within ten minutes walk of the Bierhaus and the Franciscan Well microbrewery. This makes for a nice mini craft beer pub crawl.

This is a review of the downstairs beer store as I have yet to try the upstairs bar.
It is located across the river from the opera house so it is in a very easy to find location. The selection is great for an Irish off license. Many beers to choose from, close to 300 I believe. This changes regularly and it has been different at everyone of my visits(usually spaced a few weeks apart as I don't live nearby). Many great beers to choose from including my favorite Cantillon. Great selection but the staff seem pretty uninterested. Although on occasion I have gotten free glasses etc when spending a bit extra.

I've visited the off license store twice since coming to Cork in early September and keep coming back to the bar upstairs because with exception of one other off license place in the city centre, it's the only establishment with an actual selection of craft beer. They do carry some rarer belgian beers: Cantillon, Westvleteren, Rochefort, that can't be found anywhere else in the city. Service is not the greatest, the big Russian looking and sounding dude behind the counter downstairs is utterly unhelpful and barely social. If you're looking for a place to relax and enjoy some decent local stuff from Franciscan Well or Trouble Brewing, the bar upstairs is fantastic. Lots of cool glassware and a decent refrigerated bottle selection to choose from in addition to what's on tap. Pretty good daily deals on great beers. The bar tenders are knowledgeable about beer from all over the world, particularly one who I spoke to who lived in both California and Mexico for a number of years and who was happy to talk about the state of craft beer in Ireland as a whole. Definitely give this place a try.
