8 oz tap pour into an American Tumbler at Water Street Brewery

A - Totally black with a low tan head. Low retention and no lacing.

S - Heavily roasted malts with a chocolate coffee aroma and a hint at barrel-aged woodiness but not a lot. No hops. Too overpowered by the strong maltiness.

T - Bitter coffee and chocolate that's lighter making it taste more like a porter than a stout. Heavily roasted malts with a bitter finish. No hops, no barrel-aged notes, no whiskey.

M - Dry and bitter finish from the roasted malts, not hops. Medium-bodied and pretty crisp and light-watery for a stout.

D - High drinkability on this beer for what it is but it's too much like a porter I think. It lacks a good, robust full body and anything resembling it being whiskey-like.

Had this the other day while not enjoying a very disappointing meal at the brewery. Poured a black color with minimal head. Aroma was very faint, virtually non-existent. I certainly didn't get anything resembling whiskey out of it. Flavor offered some roastiness you'd expect from a stout along with a touch of smoke, but again, so sign of any whiskey being near this beer during its production. Mouthfeel was quite thin and watery. All-in-all, hardly something I'd rush out to get again.

I had this on-tap at the brewery.

Lighter black color with a mohagany head that surfaces and recedes leaving a nice bit of lacing. Smell is strong on the whiskey. A bit of a burnt vanilla bean aroma in there, some bitter coffee too. Taste is also stronger on the bourbon than I had hoped for. I'm a bourbon fan but not really a super intense bourbon flavor in the beer fan. Some bitter chocolate and leafy earthiness underneath. A bit hollow at the top. Some weak too sweet fruity flavors. Alcohol and a whiskey burn on the finish. In the end, this beer just completely lacked the requisite body needed for a good bourbon RIS. It just felt hollow and overly bourbony. I like the attempt though, keep working on beers like this!
