Picked a bomber based solely on my Infatuation with Black IPA and since I enjoyed Lonerider's Peacemaker and Sweet Josie Brown ales, this was an easy pick...and my only regret is only getting one! This brew was amazing! Poured jet black in a pub glass ending with nice carmel colored head. The aroma suggested mocha coffee with a slight hint of hops! First taste did not disappoint! The aforementioned and highly anticpated mocha-coffee description came through and successfully masked any signs of alcohol leaving only a slightly bitter yet extremely pleasent aftertaste! Lonerider nailed this one!

Pours into a becker nearly jet black except for some deep brown highlights when held to the light,a great looking creamy beige head that settles ever so slowly.Roast and earth mixed with resiny hops in the nose.A full creamy feel makes it glide down very easy.Roasted but not in your face roasted with earthy tones and light chocolate, and brown sugar-like sweetness, the hops make a nice resiny/piny push in the finish. This is a top notch ABA,many are to roasted or the hops are out of balance, this one was great.

On tap at Bottlemixx

A - pitch black with a thick, dense, brown head that has great retetion

S - huge herbal, piny hop aroma with some faint chocolate coming through

T - chocolate, peppery, herbal, piny, roasty, bitter finish

M - medium bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is a delicious Black IPA. It has a huge flavor. It has balance and drinkability. It has depth. The hops bring a pungent, piny bitterness and the malt offers chocolate and a smooth roastiness. I am very impressed with this beer. It is definitely worth a try.

Apparently retired but not gone yet, as I picked this up last week (April 6th? 7th?) at Once Upon a Vine - South in the RVA.

As far as Cascadians go, this one is a little less hopped up than most others I have had but what sets this apart is that it's a licorice bomb of sorts. Big time licorice in fact.

First, are we sure it's retired?

This was an impressive black IPA. It was overall quite balanced, and if anything leaned toward the "black" for me rather than the "IPA." And I was quite impressed even though there was no one highlight flavor as there is in an imperial IPA (hops) or a barrel stout (malts and/or booze).

Look - Totally stoutlike in appearance. Deep and black with a quite tan head that lingered and laced.
Smell - Not as big on the nose, though nothing offensive, either. Hinted at a light chocolaty malt at the same time as hops.
Taste - "Balance" was the first word that came to mind. But came in stages for me. Much like a dark malty beer and then the hops arrive midway to accentuate the aftertaste.
Feel - smooth and rich. not creamy, just smooth.
Overall - I didn't know what to expect and this took me by surprise with being exactly what it said it was

Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is jet black, with a tall, foamy, chunky, dark brown head. Hops aromas explode out of the glass on the pour. On closer inspection, you get a heavy roasted coffee and chocolate character, resinous and piney hops, earthy notes, and hints of char. Very solid and balanced nose. Flavors are heavily roasted forward, with a solid punch of smoke and coffee, bittersweet chocolate in the backbone, and a hefty dose of resinous, bitter, pitchy hops characteristics. Highlights of grapefruit and grassy notes, as well. This brings out the guns on both sides, malt and hops, to provide an extremely full, balanced palate. Smooth, light bodied, with a roasted coffee and pine sap aftertaste. The finish has a heavy roast linger on an otherwise smooth, slightly frothy feel. This is a beast, but with high drinkability. Solid!

Appearance: The tan head mushrooms above the fudge brown liquid; webs of lacing are left behind

Smell: More roasty malt than piney hops, but a nicely balanced aroma nonetheless

Taste: Opens with a very roasty character, bringing chocolate and charred campfire ash; by mid-palate, there is a fruity development, with some piney hops adding bitterness; the finish verges more on the bitter than the roast, marking the end of a nice progression

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A nice ABA that manages to find just the right balance between the roasty malt and the piney hops
