Style: Kölsch

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewed in homage to the beer of Cologne, Krankshaft is a pale straw hued smile in a glass. We throw in a little wheat malt to round out an easy Santiam hop bitterness. There are no Köbes to serve them up, but you should feel free to have as many as you like.

Look- pours a slightly clloudy pale golden straw color with a dense white head and spotty lacing

Aroma- very subtle crackery malt, honey-like sweetness and floral hops

Taste- crackery malt with a mild slightly sweet honey note, floral and earthy hops, along with slightly tangy note that sort of morphs into a mild bitterness

Feel- medium light bodied with prickyly carbonation; finishes a bit dry and with a little bitterness

Overall- very enjoyable kolsch with subtle malt and hop notes that are nicely balanced

On tap into a pint glass. Clear golden color with a modest white head. Interesting fruity aroma with apple and pear notes. The taste was on par with a sweet fruity aspect and a clean grainy backbone. Medium bodied.

6/19/17 - On tap at Sweetwater restaurant on Michigan Ave in Chicago. Served ice cold in a tall goblet. Clear yellow with snow white head. No lacing. Went down fast. Easy drinking and refreshing. I had a second.

Served on-tap in a willi at Miller's Pub (Chicago, IL).

A: Slightly hazy lemon yellow with solid 1/2-1 finger white frothy head with good retention and lacing.

S: Delicious grainy pils, slightly tangy probably from wheat and spicy and lightly floral hopping

T: Flavor definitely outdoes the subdued aroma with blasts of grainy, moderately sweet and tangy pils maltiness followed by floral, lightly spicy, and more lemony hops which works great with the tangy maltiness. It is not sour but brushes up against it to provide a full flavor. Light bitterness.

M: Crisp and clean with tanginess that adds to the body without hurting the dryness in the finish.

O: I had been kicking around the idea of doing a kolsch for summer, and after tasting my most recent and disappointing hop experiment APA, I may take a shot at something more refreshing and clean.
