Style: German Kölsch

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewed in homage to the beer of Cologne, Krankshaft is a pale straw hued smile in a glass. We throw in a little wheat malt to round out an easy Santiam hop bitterness. There are no Köbes to serve them up, but you should feel free to have as many as you like.

Very pale, clear color with a rapidly diminishing head of 2 fingers. Mossy pond scum on top after it fades.

Fresh, crisp golden delicious apples, light dry spice, cider.

Flavors of picked apples out front, followed by stiff grains, spice rack, and cured apple. Some dry, sour bread dipped in apple cider vinegar on the finish. The flavor just grows old and painful as it continues to warm degree by degree.

Feel is the most impressive thing here by far, it starts out wet and carbonated, and just scrapes the tongue dry as it finishes and fades on the palate.

Overall, it's not half bad. I am mainly knocking out some of these beers to see which ones I should go back for tomorrow. This one I'll pass on when I revisit Binny's again.

Clean and crisp with an astringent, slightly salty finish. At Publican Tavern in O'Hare airport. Chose the beer then decided what to pair it with. Chicken sandwich was a good choice.

My first time trying this style. First beer from Metropolitan as well. Poured into stange glass which I rarely use. Clean, crisp and refreshing! Color is a light apple, pear-ish color with faint, tart fruit in the finish. Nice beer.

I took a whiff and said "wow"
12oz bottle poured into a pint glass shows a straw colored nodyflosting an aggressive soapy-bubble head.
Aroma is a clean fresh orange citrus almost apple hint.
Flavors include a bread-like touch to the fruit.
Feel is medium and falling heavy, but the fruit keeps it clean and a wet finish.

Very effervescent. Nice head and very light color. Aroma is slightly citrus. Flavor is some initial malt up front, quickly followed by hops then covered up by dryness/astringency. This is spot on for style. Very refreshing on a summer day, easy to session this one.

Pours a light straw yellow, almost clear. Champagne-like with tons of bubbles coursing upward reveal lots of carbonation. Thick four finger head initially, then dissipates leaving a bit of sticky lacing along the glass and a layer of foam on the top of the beer.

Smell has notes of lemon and citrus with cracker malt undertones. Bit of a metallic undertone to the smell.

Taste is initially very carbonated, but as that clears you get notes of cracker malts, lemon zest, prominent hop character comes through. Some floral notes from the hops. Not bitter, but certainly hoppy with a noticeable cut grass flavor. Honey-like sweetness throughout. Definite metallic taste on the aftertaste. Not sure that flavor is supposed to be there.

Feel is extremely light, crisp, with an almost harsh finish. Lots of carbonation provides a noticeable tingle on the tongue. Very drinkable and light.

Overall a decent beer. Pretty true to the style. Was off put by the metallic flavor, but Im going to assume that was an issue with the bottle and not a usual flavor. I'll have to give this one a try again at some point to see if that metallic flavor is still there.

I like Metropolitan. They stick to their knitting in the German tradition and this kolsch, in particular, shows that they've done their homework.

Poured into a stange, I think I've never had a beer that was over half foam (but it settled down.) Paler than I expected.
Delicate Smells, mostly malts and some citrus... let's call it lemon since it's the same color.
Tastes like it Smells, but also adds a very nice dryness lingers. And crisp.

I will have Krankshaft again and it simplicity has given me incentive to try Metropolitan's other offerings; like some darker malts.
