12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 10/19/2015. Pours clear nearly opaque dark brown color with a 2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, wood, slight dark fruit, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of roast/bready malt and earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, wood, slight dark fruit, and roast/toasted earthiness. Moderate amount of herbal/spicy hop and roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, smoke, char, herbal, wood, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt and earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bitter/sweet balance and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from roast/hop bitterness than increases through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Foreign stout! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready malt and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on to style expectations.

It has quite the banana taste to it, it is quite liquidy for a stout but still has great aromas and flavors of stronger fruits.

$ 1.89/12 oz bottle at Lager Mill
Bottled 020514 at 40 degrees into imperial pint glass
Aroma of roasted malt
Head large (5.5 cm), light brown, frothy, rapidly diminishing to 3 mm layer
Lacing fair – small islands of mostly small bubbles, some atolls
Body dark brown, opaque
Flavor begins with roast malt bitterness with some chocolate highlights; ends with chalky mouth feel; no alcohol, no hops, no diacetyl; no stout sweetness at all.
Palate medium, watery, fizzy carbonation

Not a particularly good stout – the bitterness and chalky aftertaste definitely detract from the enjoyment for me, as does the wateriness. The lack of any initial sweetness typical of the export-style stouts is disappointing.

Picked up a single of this as part of a fourpack I made at some beer store in Northville that I can't think of the name of... got this along with Stone Saison, and a pair of beers I've had before, Victory DirtWolf and Short's Huma Lupa Licious.

Appearance: Black with a sort of soapy and creamy head. Poured into the glass semi-aggressively and it all poured in perfectly with that nice pillowy head on it. Tons of lacing as I made my way down the glass as well.

Smell: Smoke, coffee/roastiness, and also some chocolate. Mostly the usual suspects, but this one has a smokier quality than most "standard" stouts do, I'd say.

Taste/feel: I was told it was smokey tasting, and it definitely is -- a smoke/ash flavor coupled with coffee. There's also a kind of cocoa flavor in there as well, and maaaaybe dark fruits a touch as it warms up, to add complexity and a little sweetness. The feel isn't great, but it does make this beer drinkable. Personally, I'd call this Starkweather Porter, simply because it's a little on the thin side.

Stout/porter... whatever. This is a good one from Liberty Street. Not exactly a top-tier sort of stout, but it has some nice flavor, a bit of complexity, and it's reasonably priced. If you like a bit of smoke in your stouts, try this one out.

The looks seems to fluctuate a bit. It looks thin on the pour but settles with a good strength and is almost as dark as it gets. It appears spritzy but ends up growing quite a large medium brown head that settles to a creamy and thick finger, resting at that height for the rest of the session. It leaves some good patching behind.
The first whiff is something odd, almost vegetal. That seems to disappear with a little time, then I get tang and a somewhat nondescript malt. A hint of roast or char show up initially, but every sniff after gives off a strange note almost of burnt apples. It almost works, but it's off a bit.
The taste works pretty well. It's pretty much straight up roasty malt, dry with a hint of woodiness, just a little char to it. There may be just a slight floral bitterness, which adds a touch of balance. There's a vague note of tang, but it's not strong.
The body is firm, and the carbonation isn't too terribly heavy, but it's too strongly crisp overall, nearly spritzy. It runs fairly dry all the way through.

Pours a sold dark, near black, with hints of mahogany red at the edge. Pillows of head form; off-white and persistent.. Initially at 2.5 inches., but settling to 1/8 inch. The nose suggests dark-roasted malts, cooked milk, and chocolate. Medium body, with nice lingering, although the body is lighter than expected for a stout. The palate suggests cacao nibs, malt and distinct bitter notes, with a very pleasant lingering. Belgian lace did form. Carbonation is pleasant and the ABV is not noticeable. Very pleasant and appealing, but not noticeably unique.
