12oz chalice at the New Belgium pub in the international departure lounge wing at DEN.

This beer appears a solid black hole in terms of 'colour', with one finger of soapy, tightly foamy, and rather creamy beige head, which leaves a wall of limestone face lace around the glass as it slowly bleeds away.

It smells of cocoa powder, salted pretzels, caramel malt, a soft yeastiness, black licorice, earthy hops, and a tickle of alcohol astringency. The taste is dry chocolate flakes, biscuity caramel, sassy yeast, salted crackers, milky coffee, subtle anise, and leafy, earthy hops - all under the suggestion of a hanging scepter of booziness.

The bubbles are fairly soft, the underlying frothiness barely noticeable, the body medium-full in weight, quite smooth, and somewhat creamy. It finishes sweet, sort of, as that Belgian yeast tempers the chocolate, caramel, and even the salt, a long way.

A pleasant enough warming chocolate stout, jazzed up with everybody's favourite 'spice' (just a soupcon), and New Belgium's new world Belgian yeast - not too shabby a find at such a remote airport gate!

Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter. Side of bottle says Best Enjoyed By March 27, 2016.

A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with a 1/2 inch light brown head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a bubbly side patch of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a thin jagged ring behind.

S- Somewhat strange aroma which I'm assuming is the Belgian yeast bouncing off the chocolate in a non-complementary way. Considerable alcohol fume.

T- Belgian yeast comes through strong with the chocolate and dark roasted malt staying near the back. The yeast gives everything a soily overtone making the chocolate come across more dry rather than sweet. Also the char element from the roasted malt isn't helping things. Alcohol is noticeable and kind of in the way.

M- Thick and a bit sharp from the medium carbonation and yeast. Full body.

O- I was expecting and wanting a bit more sweetness with this one. Not bad, I just don't really see what they were going for with it.

I had a glass of New Belgium's Salted Belgian Chocolate Stout from a bottle that my friends shared with me. This beer interests me and I've always wanted to try something from Perennial Artisan Ales, but since they aren't available in Michigan I guess this is the closest I can get for now, so lets see how it goes. 2014 Vintage. Poured from a brown 22oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The label looks nice, I think it goes well with the name and I think it's a little eye catching. It poured a nice black color that didn't let any light through and it had a finger and half worth of slightly darker tan head that died down to a thin ring that eventually faded away and it left just a little bit of spotty lacing behind. This was a pretty nice looking beer, but I wish the head and lacing were just a little better.

S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the malts being the first to show up and they impart a dark roasted malt, slightly charred, sweet malt and slightly grainy aromas. Up next comes the chocolate that has a somewhat dark chocolate like aroma to it and it's followed by a noticeable anise like aroma. This beer had a decent aroma, it seemed like a solid stout base.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with the malts still being the first to show up and they impart the same aspects that they did in the aroma with no single aspect sticking out the most. Up next comes the chocolate which shows up just as much as it did in the aroma, but there's no noticeable salted aspect to it and it was still followed by a noticeable anise aspect. On the finish there's a lighter amount of medium bitterness with a roasted malt, chocolate and light anise like aftertaste. This was a decent tasting beer, but i don't think it lived up to it's name.

M- Fairly smooth, a little rich, a little creamy, slightly crisp, on the thick side of being medium bodied with a lower amount of medium carbonation. This beer had a nice mouthfeel and i thought it worked well with it.

Overall I thought this was a decent beer and decent example of the style, but I don't think it lived up to the name since I didn't get any noticeable salted chocolate aspects, but i do admit that I've never had Salted Belgian Chocolate so maybe I am missing it, but as it stands now I don't feel like i got what was advertised. This beer had ok drinkability, it was fairly smooth, a little rich, a little creamy, slightly crisp, a little filling and the taste didn't do a great job at holding my attention, one is enough for me, I don't have any urge to drink more of it. What I liked the most about this beer was the appearance, it was a pretty nice looking beer. What I liked the least about this beer is that I just didn't feel like it lived up to it's name. I wouldn't buy this beer and I can't say I would recommend it, but if you just want a fairly straight forward stout it may be worth a try. All in all I wasn't impressed with this beer, there's some pretty good beers in the Lips of Faith series, but this isn't one of them. It's one of my least favorite beers from the series and it's pretty middle of the road for New Belgian and as far as the style go it's pretty middle of the road also. I am still very interested in trying some Perennial beers. I appreciate the effort, but this one just wasn't too interesting, better luck next time guys.

Gifted from a great friend. Brewed with Pale, Munich, Special W/ Caramel 220, Carafa II/Roasted Chocolate Malt, chocolate and salts. Fermented with a belgian yeast strain. Hopped with Nugget.
35 IBU's, 9.0% ABV, 280kcal/12oz.

Pours out to a near black, forming a modest dark tan head with poor retention and average lacing. Carbonation is moderate. Aroma is interesting, definitely belgian yeast phenolics of burnt rubber, rubberbands, hot asphalt and rotting bananas on top of a somewhat synthetic chocolate nose, some subtle walnut and vanilla. The mouthfeel is medium dense with a slightly tart and roasted char to it. Medium carbonation. The taste is a recap of the nose...lots of belgian esters, burnt marshmallows, moderate roast with a touch of coffee, some dank cardboard in the middle, a moderate herbaceous bitterness and a dry finish.

Well, this beer is much better in principal than practice. First, it needs a neutral yeast, then cocoa powder (not chocolate), less attentuation to leave a residual sweetness, a little crystal malt, maltodextrin, and munich to add body, less roast (I would opt for debittered black malt), and more salt, then it would be closer to what I was hoping for. The belgian phenolics DO NOT sit well with the chocolate. Nix that combo. MUCH different (not even remotely close) than what I think most people would expect when hearing "salted belgian chocolate". Unfortunately, I got about 6 oz into out and couldn't stomach it anymore. Down the sink it went.

Had a pint from a freshly tapped keg at Falling Rock the other night.

Killer eye candy; pitch black with a creamy, tan, 2-finger head. Nose was full of cocoa powder. Creamy and luscious on the palate. Bittersweet chocolate, caramel center, nutty undertones, and a tease of sea salt. Not overly sweet, with a dry back. Very well-balanced.

I really dug this one, and would definitely order it again before its gone.

22 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a huge creamy nitro like light tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is roasted chocolate malts and salt with some plastic.

The flavor is sweet and acidic chocolate malts with some burnt roast a some ashy leather. As it warms , more sweet lactic chocolate comes out and a little Belgian yeast. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with full carbonation.

Overall, sweet roasted chocolate with a lot of off flavors, but didn't pick up much salt.

22oz brown bottle with no freshness date.

Dark and sudsy with a good lacing. Warming nose of phenols, dark chocolate, roasted grain, and candied fruit. Big roasted character, chocolaty but then a bit savory. Very warming on the palate. Brown bread, cocoa powder, faint saltiness, modest hopping, & kiss of sweetness throughout.

Big and bold and very palatable, well done!

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a tulip glass

A: Tawny micro bubbles that linger in a thin veil across the surface. Deep nut brown with mahogany tint when held up to the light.

S: Tons of sweet chocolate, chocolate malt, some saltiness with warming.

T: Chocolate comes through strongly, saltiness comes through as a unique flavor more noticeable as the beer warms. Also getting some alcohol heat as it warms. No strong hop flavor as expected.

M: Light carbonation, thicker body but not syrup-y, slight viscous finish.

O: Spectacular brew, was actually curious to see how the salted chocolate would play together in beer and pleasantly impressed. Would drink again for sure.

Jet black in color with a fingernail of khaki colored head. Brussels lacing. Aroma is predominantly rich, dark chocolate. The flavor closely matches the aroma along with some bitter roasted barley notes and a trace of piney hops. This is initially sweet,then bitter,and the fade is sweet again. The mouth is oily and thick.
