1554 defies the style guidelines of modern beer. Although dark in color, 1554 is not a porter, stout, schwarzbier or bock. Rather, it is a rebirth of a lost beer style called zwert (Flemish for black), which uses gruit for bittering. The oldest reference to zwert beer comes from 1285. However, our brewing inspiration came from a book published in 1554, which was the height of popularity for zwertbeer. First released in 1998, our whimsical improvisation includes a variety of specialty dark malts, a dash of licorice root, and a European lager yeast that’s fermented at ale temperatures.

A: appears opaque and cola brown, but if held to the light, it's crystal clear and a beautiful mahogany;1 finger finely pored light brown head that receded to a moderate collar; light lacing;
S: deeply roasted grain, milk chocolate, and spices;
T: follows the nose, but not as bright; mild to moderate bitterness at the end;
M: medium bodied; low carbonation; moderately dry finish;
O: low carbonation may have dulled the flavors;

This my current favorite ale. Being a fan of Bock beer and nut brown ales in general, this one goes a step further, using gruit instead of hops. It is very dark a real beauty, never-the-less not heavy like many German dark beers. Made in USA it is a revival of pre 1600 ale. A very plesent blend of sweet bitter robust flavor. I only drink beer/ale in bottles, not cans.

12 oz. can pours a very dark reddish brown with small beige head and good lacing. Aroma is full of bready malts, chocolate, and some dark fruits. Taste is slightly sweet fithout much of a finish. Easily drinkable. Tastes something like a thin porter. Body is medium with average carbonation. Very good for such a widely distributed beer.
