Juicy Watermelon Watermelon Lime AleJuicy Watermelon Watermelon Lime Ale
Notes: Formerly Heavy Melon

Hot summer nights, jam out to the cooling waves of Heavy Melon Ale, our newest seasonal track. Brewed with juicy watermelon and zesty lime peel, this crushable ale rips with a blast of melon notes. Ripened fruit aromas of melon, papaya and citrus climax with an enticing aroma, and set up an invigorating wash of fruity sweetness, grassy bitterness and the slightest touch of tartness. Super crisp and refreshing from start to finish, Heavy Melon Ale shreds through the summer heat.

This beer tastes like a watermelon rind was blended till it was liquified.

Looks like a bland golden beer. Thin watermelon rind beer. No redeeming value here.

Honestly, this isn't nearly as bad as the scores and reviews indicate. It's enjoyable and could definitely taste worse. And I'm drinking it well past the best by date. Never let it get warm but it's tasty if it's cold...and if it's free.

Beer pours the typical golden color with a small white head. The smell is melon with some other weird smell. The flavor does have some watermelon, cucumber and lime but it's the rind of the watermelon is what over powers the flavor. Like most New Belgium beers I've had not super impressive.

This beer was called "Heavy Melon" when I had it.

"Enjoy by 9/18/16"; drank 6/24/16 @ the Yarchives.

See-through orange/yellow appearance.

A rough pour yielded a nice white head; frothly lace.

Watermelon & honeyed grain notes in the nose.

Medium thin mouthfeel.

Watermelon & honeyed grain flavors up front; faint lime bite on the finish.

Super mild; this would work on a hot summer day but is overall forgettable.

I'm no beer expert, only a beer lover. I've never felt inclined to a review a beer until this very special occasion, because this beer here tastes simply phenomenal. Phenomenally like garbage. Just imagine that, a beer that tastes just like sewer water! All joking aside, it doesn't smell very special, just an average ale with a hint of lime; it doesn't look anything like I expected, much darker than a light fruity style beer; average carbonation; but most importantly - for some wild reason that I cannot explain - this beer taste like bad sushi. To be more specific, it tastes like the cheap nori seaweed you would buy from the grocery store for making sushi. I don't know how they managed to do it, but apparently watermelon + lime + beer = watered down fish paste. So very strange, so very unpleasant. I'm glad I did not buy a six-pack of these - if I wanted that much epecac, I would've drank a bottle of bleach instead.

Sometimes I'm just really glad I am able to try a beer without having to buy a beer (or six of them). This is one of those beers.

Shawn brought this for some reason to a football game. Dark gold in color, white head, 1/4". Aroma of um, I dunno, shitty beer with lime? Reminded me of bottom shelf tequila and clear bottle "beer".

Taste might have been even worse. There isn't beercentric stuff like hops and malt. Its salt, lime, watermelon. Brackish bitterness and it isn't through the hops. Watermelon never works in beer, and lime isn't that successful either. I can't envision a situation where I want to drink this beer, no matter how hot it is.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 mi) bottle into a Weissbier glass; listed as "Enjoy by 16 July 2017."
A: Pours a clear, very dark golden color with a foamy (>one inch) head, very strong retention and lacing.
S: Bouquet includes fresh grass and melon. A little spicy.
T: Taste includes a distinct watermelon flavor with a light toastiness and a citrusy destined. Minimally bitter.
M: Light bodied; good persistence of carbonation. Crisp, tart finish.
O: Interesting and different. Definitely a refreshing summer option.

Pours a very dark golden yellow, almost so dark it appears amber at first glance. Thick foamy head with lots of lacing and retention. Smells of slight citrusy hops with notes of pine and/or other woody hops, but really just smells like a standard pale ale. Very full-bodied mouthfeel; strong bitterness on the palate upon first taste, but mellows as it sits and post-swallow. Tastes of a very standard IPA; little sense of watermelon or lime zest. Overall, doesn't taste like a fruit-brewed beer; tastes more like a near-miss of an IPA-turned fruit beer. Could definitely be improved; slightly bland for the style. Was a bit disappointed by this beer.

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Brass gold yellow body color, quite a bit of clarity if some possible haze. Some slight carbonation but mostly a bit quiet on the rising bubbles. Head is a fluffy strong white, not bright though. Manages about two fingers with some retention, and a good bowled puck.

Aroma is relatively, well.. Normal. Hints at basic pale ale, maybe a little bit of citrus zest but pretty small. Clean and fairly neutral, kind of comes off more like a regular pale ale on the nose than some amped up fruit beer. Not sweet smelling that's for sure.

Palate is strangely ordinary. A bit wet bodied and watery but not terribly. Flavors seem to range to a neutral malt base, slightly sticky, mild sense of lime zest as well. A bit of a drying finish strangely. Very clean, not too gaseous either.

Bizarrely though, this really doesn't come off like a tasting fruit beer. There might be some sense of watermelon contributing to mouthfeel, but it comes off more like a neutral simple drinkable pale ale. In a way that's not so bad, but doesn’t really have flavors of lime or watermelon either.

12oz bottle into snifter.

A: Pours a deep golden with a thin off-white head that faded into a fuzzy collar. Wispy lace.
S: The nose is light with just hint of perfumey/floral fruit juice over notes of grainy wheat.
T: Light watermelon hints followed by creamy and grainy wheat and a kiss of lime. The finish is minerally and the aftertaste mildly bitter along with a lingering, slightly synthetic, yet slightly juicy, melon-like flavor.
M: Medium body, creamy and soft mouthfeel, with fluffy and slightly chewy carbonation.
O: Much lighter than expected. I can appreciate subtlety as opposed to cloying sweet synthetic fruit flavors, but the flavors in this were pretty bland.

Not really my kind of beer but really well done for the style. A lighter golden beer with a white head that is thin and fades quickly, no lacing. The aroma is a bit malty with watermelon rind and a little bit of lime zest. The beer is pretty light in body with light carbonation. The taste of the grain, the white part of the watermelon rind and the hint of lime zest make this a pleasant and easy drinking beer that is refreshing for a hot day. I was surprised and pleased by this beer.

Not quite sure what to make of this beer at first, perhaps I got hung up looking for the watermelon and lime (never really found either).
But ...
I enjoyed the beer a lot. Perhaps it was the 108 degree heat that helped make it so refreshing. Definitely a few more 6-packs of these in my future

This beer prompts me to think that New Belgium has a new brewing strategy: experiment, but within the middle third of the bell curve of risk. (That's where the big boys bet.) Juicy Watermelon tries new combinations, but nothing radical. Watermelon is great in summer. Lime adds more refreshment to summer beverages. Put them both in a beer and keep the hops low so the sweet cannot Taste bitter or dry and so it Smells like fruit and malt. And if you give this enough bubbles, it will cleanse the mouth and not Feel thin.

This ale does all these common sense things and a few more.
Best yet, it is refreshing ... particularly when being outside is as hot as hell and you've just played tennis.
The circumstances in which a beer is Had sometimes can be as important as the beer itself... particularly when the weather is extreme. That helps define a beers job. Ratings need to consider circumstances.
Mine are higher because I'm having Juicy Watermelon often this summer and the next. How about you?

7/21/17 Had again in similar heated circumstances. No change in rating. Gimme next year.

Bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a golden color with a very minor white head. Scent of watermelon is present, but the lime flavor takes over the flavor of the beer. Would have preferred this without the lime. Drinkable beer, but would not seek out again.

The only reason I got this beer was for the other beers in the sampler pack, obviously. Who crafted this beer and thought,"Wow let's make a shandy that tastes like stomach acid, prevomit".

First, off I'm not a fan of shandies, so I'm biased, but there are decent shandies out there. This beer though, smells like a citrus stale beer nightmare to start, although the color looks promising. Then you take a sip and the first cold notes seem to be refreshing ale, then the citrus watermelon stomach acid taste and thick residue slid down the back of your mouth, crushing all notion of good color and decent refreshing ale taste.

I don't know how this beer got macro-produced, but wow is it terrible. Literally the only reason I started my beer advocate account was to rip on and steer real beer drinkers away from this "beer". I don't know how this beer has above a 3 rating on here. Just wow.

Bizarre new beer from NB.

A: Medium gold, with a large, frothy head.
S: The sweetness of the nose is a bit odd--it makes me think of a brown ale--not identifiably watermelon at all. There's a touch of something acidic, perhaps lime, too.
T: Still can't pick up any lime, and the flavor really makes me think of Fat Tire with its slightly nutty maltiness. Is that the watermelon? It doesn't take like it. I can't get any lime notes out of the it either. Did they mistakenly package fat tire in these cans?
M: Light bodied, soft.
O: Very peculiar beer. This is my second one from the case. The first I drank from the can and had to do a doubletake to make sure I had grabbed the right one (it''s in a variety pack).

I don't know what they're trying here, but I find it sad NB gets ever further from their belgian roots, every year.

A - Golden orange, clear, with a pure white head, short, and some definite lacing.

S - Malty hit, sweet, with fruit notes and a definite funky off note that is not terribly appetizing.

T - Very restrained watermelon hit in the open, subtle juice and a bit of the white flesh, as well, complemented by a bit of lime sourness, and grassy hops in the close. The sweet watermelon note lingers past the close.

M - Very light, leaving a light, lingering astringency on the close.

O - An interesting one. The nose is not pleasant, but the taste is a pleasant fruit drinker. The watermelon is well integrated, and hits actual fruit flavors, not candied notes. The result is solid, but not particularly compelling.

My personal opinion, it's a little too tart in the after finish, but if you're looking for a lime tang finish. Smells a. It and teasers a bit of watermelon. I prefer hell or high watermelon, personally, which doesn't have lime. But overall a good refreshing beer that I would drink right now or after a hot day of work.

Living not far from NB in Asheville NC, I have visited their brewery and taproom always coming away impressed. I often thought they could do no wrong. Interestingly, I seem to be the one who was wrong....wrong to buy this beer that is.

I do lots of home brews, and would have dumped this keg had I run an experimental batch. Literally, there was nothing I liked about this beer, neither did my wife. The taste was the worst offender with a funky twang and bitterness hard to describe. She poured a glass, and at the half way point announced she couldn't drink the rest. So much for thinking they could do no wrong.

A: Biscuity malt upfront, slightly sweet, with a light citrus and watermelon notes.

A: Golden color, totally clear, with a moderate white uniform head, decent retention. There is light lacing in the glass.

T: Light watermelon that very quickly gives way to the biscuit malts, the beer has a slight malt sweetness and very faint tartness on the finish.

M: Light bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Solid enough, the beer is drinkable and refreshing, though not very juicy. However, the beer's malt is prominent and the watermelon and limes are fainter than expected.

I was both disappointed and impressed by the quality of this beer. After trying the Citradel (and absolutely reveling in the flavor), I purchased this, hoping for the watermelon and lime equivalent of a nuclear bomb on my tastebuds. Unfortunately, the flavoring quality of the watermelon is unexpectedly high, and boasts a flavor and texture profile that seems to indicate the genuine article - or, if not, a very impressive verisimilitude. I can't fault the beer for being genuine to the watermelon-lime flavors made explicit on the label, but, I was hoping for something a bit more candyish!

A fantastic ale for convincing your other 21-25-year-old friends who drink cheaper ales that the grass is greener on this side. Clean, crisp, and more inoffensive than I had hoped!

It is bad to taste and also to drink. Like I don't know what to say, I did not enjoy this. It does not taste or remind me of watermelon. I regret this purchase but am glad it was only one bottle. Has a sour flavor (to me) so perhaps if you enjoy sours and goses you will like this? There is a fruity note to it, but just barely. Tastes like a New Belgium that has gone horribly wrong.

Tasty, but tasty like gatorade, not beer. This is commercial beer - there is nothing wrong with it, but I don't find it refreshing or soothing. It's not as bad as the blueberry beer, but I can't imagine ordering it as "the beer I want to drink now." It's a shame that the Fat Tire people are committing to this.

If you took a nice ale and added watermelon syrup and a squeeze of lime - that "might" be a hit. This tastes "real" but not "real good".

From notes taken 02/02/17:

Clear dull golden amber with very light tan head of well-retaining foam. Grass, cucumber, lemon or lime on nose. Droopy, splotchy lacing. To taste, watermelon/melon/cucumber I suppose but not sweet and thankfully doesn’t seem artificial or concentrated at all. Aside from that, grain, biscuit, water, salt, floral hops, tiny amount of citrus. Not as weird or sweet or fruity as expected, thankfully. A well-balanced, enjoyable beer that doesn’t overdo the added flavors and could almost pass for something without them. Light to medium in body, watery, tingly, almost spritzy. Compare to any number of lime or cactus macro lagers, although this is slightly better.
