Juicy Watermelon Watermelon Lime AleJuicy Watermelon Watermelon Lime Ale
Notes: Formerly Heavy Melon

Hot summer nights, jam out to the cooling waves of Heavy Melon Ale, our newest seasonal track. Brewed with juicy watermelon and zesty lime peel, this crushable ale rips with a blast of melon notes. Ripened fruit aromas of melon, papaya and citrus climax with an enticing aroma, and set up an invigorating wash of fruity sweetness, grassy bitterness and the slightest touch of tartness. Super crisp and refreshing from start to finish, Heavy Melon Ale shreds through the summer heat.

12oz bottle - yup, just uttering the name of this watermelon and lime-flavoured brew evokes the Judas Priest tune 'Heavy Metal' in my brain's wiring.

This beer pours a clear, bright medium golden amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly ecru head, which leaves some splendid cobwebbed lace around the glass as it slowly and lazily subsides.

It smells of bready and biscuity caramel malt, subtle generic citrus notes, an even more ethereal watermelon rind green thing, and some further toasted graininess. The taste is yeah, watermelon - both the pithy rind and the sweet flesh - grainy and crackery pale and caramel malt, a still muddled and plain citrusy character, some cucumber/carrot light vegetal joint, and very gentle leafy, herbal, and grassy hop bitters.

The carbonation is fairly light and innocuous in its clipped frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and mostly smooth, just a small fruit and/or vegetal pithiness taking the sheen off of the proceedings here. It finishes trending dry, the graininess starting to wither, and the watermelon seeming like it was left just a wee bit too long on the vine.

Overall, I gotta say that New Belgium succeeded with this offering, in the sense that it appears to be very difficult to have that flavour persist through the brewing process, based on almost every other watermelon beer that I have encountered (counted on one hand, of course). Quite refreshing, and worthy of summertime patio/backyard BBQ and 19th hole excursions alike.

Heavy Melon has a thick, off-white head, a clear, golden appearance, a few stray bubbles, and splotchy lacing left behind. The aroma is of light malt and a touch of fruit. Taste is of the same, with no lime detected, but lots of water detected. Mouthfeel is light and watery, and Heavy Melon finishes medium dry.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is a bit unusual, kind of musty, light grains. Taste is grains, lime some salt, light watermelon. Feels light bodied in the mouth and overall is by far the worst beer of the many I have tried from this brewery.

If New Belgium isn't one of the worst, most disappointing breweries out there, I'm going to need someone to tell me what is. This swill is no better than a mass produced domestic beer. Flavorless, gritty, and indistinguishably bland.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 mi) bottle into a Weissbier glass; listed as "Enjoy by 16 July 2017."
A: Pours a clear, very dark golden color with a foamy (>one inch) head, very strong retention and lacing.
S: Bouquet includes fresh grass and melon. A little spicy.
T: Taste includes a distinct watermelon flavor with a light toastiness and a citrusy destined. Minimally bitter.
M: Light bodied; good persistence of carbonation. Crisp, tart finish.
O: Interesting and different. Definitely a refreshing summer option.

Heavy Melon pours a hazy honey amber color with hills of pasty lacing.

Aromas of basic lager smells, with caramel malts, orange rinds, and butterscotch.

Comes off like a watered down diet soda, with a remainder of wet cantaloupe on the finish. I don't know what these guys were thinking at the brewery, but it's very unremarkable. So much of that club soda cracker flavor and mineral water/diet soda...it's just so blah.

Feel is very carbonated, and that is pretty much it. Just a touch of paste on the finish.

It's easy enough to finish, but it just tastes like salty, rhiny water. Nothing much here to look back on.

Pours as a golden color with a finger and a half white head. Smells of watermelon, grainy, and a slight hint of lime. Taste is a watery watermelon. Mouthfeel is bitter and watery. Overall, expected more from this brewery.

Honestly, this isn't nearly as bad as the scores and reviews indicate. It's enjoyable and could definitely taste worse. And I'm drinking it well past the best by date. Never let it get warm but it's tasty if it's cold...and if it's free.

APPEARANCE: A very clear golden/amber with a finger of off white head that fades fairly quick down to a thin layer. Sparse amount of big bubbles rising. Very slight lacing down the glass.
AROMA: Watermelon and lime undertones, but this has kind of a musty grainy scent.
TASTE: Mild watermelon and lime, bready malt, no real bitterness, but not too sweet, either.
FEEL: Average carbonation, medium thin body, fairly dry all the way through the swig.
OVERALL: Barbeque beer, tastes better than it smells.

Poured a very clear yellow color with a finger width head. Retention is mild as is lacing. Light watermelon arom. Sweet malts. Crackery malt taste with maybe some light lime and with a strong watermelon at the end. Not overly sweet, though. Light bodied and low carbonation. Didn't expect much from this beer, and it was as expected. Would drink on a hot, hot summer day after working in the yard.

Bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a golden color with a very minor white head. Scent of watermelon is present, but the lime flavor takes over the flavor of the beer. Would have preferred this without the lime. Drinkable beer, but would not seek out again.
