Thanks to Boulder’s finest for this unabashedly tropic take on Fat Tire. Avery took a healthy dose of Brettanomyces Bruxellensis Drie to create a Fat Tire spin with a sturdy malt backbone, fruity hop aroma and a tropical pineapple layer. Heed the call of the wild Fat Tire.

August 26th, 2016 - The Sour Apple version of this collaboration was decent, though a little off in places. The Wild Ale collaboration is instead kind of funky. Dark and auburn, it mimics a red or amber ale, and is capped with a thick cork of head. But even through this dry wall of bubbles I can get all the funk in the aroma, coupled with some fruity smells: peach and apple. The flavor is milder than the smell, with a touch of Brett and a dash of barnyard, but only just a little bit.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip.

A- Dark amber with some nice ruby hues. Head is just off-white, great retention and fantastic lacing throughout the drink.

S- Funk/brett off the bat. Tropical fruits and some dark fruity (cherry) notes. A little bit of a Belgian spice esters.

T- Tropical/pineapple, bicuity, a little funk. Some spice and a faint licorice.

M- Medium body with wispy carbonation. Finishes mildly spicy, and a bit dry.

O- A very different take on a typical Brett sour. Interesting mix but it works well.

Pours amber. Foamy, short, off white head fades fast.

Smells light amounts of fruit, funk, tart and malt.

Tastes light tart fruit, funk and a lot of Caramel malt. Finish is semi dry with a light fruit linger. Medium body and fizzy light carbonation.

My New Belgium horizontal that I am conducting as part of the eradication of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody is beginning to wind down. I was at the FGBS last evening for a New Belgium Etch-a-Glass Night & my sometimes trivia partner, Sister Disco, won a bicycle! I began this home stretch with a revisitation of good ol' Fat Tire Amber Ale to kind of set a baseline as this series is predicated on that beer. The remaining five (5), including this final one, are all variations on that theme in collaboration with other breweries, in this case, Avery Brewing Company.

From the bottle: "Go wild for Fat. Heed the call of the wild Fat Tire."

I am SO happy with my etched NB glass! It reads "Bro. Woody drinks New Belgium beer!" & I am getting it seasoned nicely since its creation last night. I Pop!ped the cap & despite it being a fresh bottle, I have begun to embrace a gentle pour followed by an in-glass swirl. Once again, a full three fingers of dense, foamy, light-tan rushed up to greet me like an anxious puppy on its master's return. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. I think that they really nailed it with their mention of pineapple, based on the nose. That scent, combined with the inherent breadiness of the base recipe, made me think of pineapple upside-down cake, albeit with a light funkiness. I like that the collaborators in this series have held the Brett in check as I have had some beers that were hair-raising & toenail-curling from their use of Brett. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was not as tropical as the nose had suggested, but there was definitely a pineapple in there somewhere, probably right next to the pony. This one was more funky than Fat Funk, but it could all depend on what you wanted/were looking for in & from the beer. Oooh, I had a mild bout of sneezing which generally signifies a light allergic reaction, usually to the yeast. Finish was dry and by that, I mean bone dry! Woof! I gotta get out my asthma inhaler. Whew! This one really brought Belgium to Colorado and/or North Carolina. What a fitting end to yet another crazy journey on my part.

12 oz. Bottle

Pours a pretty nice amber color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy/foamy white head, which leaves some sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, malty, yeasty, some funk, tart, citrus. The taste is hoppy, malty, citrusy, funky, tart. Medium body. Overall, a pretty tasty brew.

12 oz bottle bb 5/7/17 poured into a Fat Tire shaker pint at fridge temp. Color is brilliantly clear reddish, amber. Khaki heat of about 3/4" fades to a solid cap and leaves impressive lacing. Smell is faint pineapple and Brett. Taste is more pineapple and Brett. There is very little malt sweetness on the beginning of the sip before it gives way to the dry, sharp mouthfeel. There is pronounced bitterness on the end of the drink balances the remaining malt. Overall, good and an outstanding pack to display how one base beer can be morphed into a wide variety of beers with subtle changes. Cheers to New Belgium
