Fat Tire And Friends Fat Sour Apple AleFat Tire And Friends Fat Sour Apple Ale
Notes: Collaboration with Hopworks Urban Brewery

Our heroes at HUB pedaled Fat Tire straight to the apple orchard. This slightly sour homage starts out with a snap of tartness, courtesy of Lactobacillus and apple juice, then gets balanced with Fat Tire-inspired malty sweetness and a slight herbal bitterness. Nice ride, HUB!

Smell is apple juice, bready malt, and saltines. Taste is biscuity with a bit of apple cider on the finish. This was surprisingly bland and had very little tartness. Hoping the rest of the collaborations are better.

Brief initial impression:

Overcarbonated, shallow, and simple. A beer that tries to pass itself off as a sour ale for marketing purposes, but delivers little that will please true fans of the style.

Low C / AVERAGE

***
08/23/16 2nd impression:

Slightly sour, with a noticeable apple flavour that isn't entirely genuine.

Smooth, wet, somewhat soft, refreshing, medium-bodied.

A likable drinkable middle-of-the-road ale that doesn't deliver on its marketing, lacking both in terms of sourness and vivid apple. Oh well; what did we expect from a half-hearted New Belgium variety box?

Fat Tire and Friends Fat Sour Apple Ale pours brilliant copper gold with rapidly rising bubbles under an off white 2" persistent rocky and lacy foam cap. Apple and lemon aromas predominate supported by a variety of fruit. Has a big Granny Smith sour apple palate followed by traces of stone fruit and a light background malt and a mild bitter finish. Mild malty sweetness combined with the apple evokes an apple turnover. It has a light spritzy almost wine like texture and is a very refreshing drink.

From the 12 oz bottle in a snifter via a friend from work--THANKS RANDY!
This nice little sour pours a chill hazed golden amber with a moderate head of
white foam that settles to a thick ring, thin layer, and sports light lacing. Nose of
light grains and with warmth some tart apple notes. Flavors lightly exceed the nose
with a touch of spontaneous yeast note and tart apples with light grains and subtle
cracker notes. Decent mouth feel, medium high carbonation that helps move the
otherwise tart yeast flavor. I am not the biggest lover of the sours, yet this one is
crisp and interesting, yet would not want more than one of them in a sitting.
Overall, a nice collaboration.

Cheers

12 oz bottle. Pours clean medium golden color, thin white head fades fast. Mild apple cider aroma. Apple cider amber taste, not much bitterness. Mouthfeel falls a little flat.

FT&F's Sour Apple Ale with the lime green writing pours a pale color, much like apple juice, and has a nice rocky head leaving rings of lace behind. Transparency is near 100%.

Aromas of apple cider vinegar, fresh cut Granny Smiths, pale malts, and mussmelon.

Flavors of green apple skins, pale malts, green grape, apple cider vinegar, and a very tart pucker that comes from somewhere but I can't point out the source. Pale malts finish out the profile.

Feel is okay, a touch chalky, mostly creamy, mildly carbonated.

This beer tries too hard to not be sweet. Just give in a little...can you? It's shy of apple but wants to be an apple flavored beer. Gotta press up those malts and vinegar notes! Just...apple it, will ya?

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a pours a clear darkish golden amber with a medium sized white head. The aroma is heavy with sour apple and wheat. The taste is sour apples, wheat and some yeast. A real good beer.

Poured from 12-ounce bottle into a SA Perfect Pour glass. Attractive apple-juice color, with a thick white head that stayed around for a few minutes, leaving some spotty lacing. Aromas and flavors of light malt, caramel, and tart apple. The tartness is somewhat muted and not at all overpowering. Medium-light mouthfeel, with a crisp finish. Pleasantly drinkable, good beer with food.
