Collaboration with Hopworks Urban Brewery
Our heroes at HUB pedaled Fat Tire straight to the apple orchard. This slightly sour homage starts out with a snap of tartness, courtesy of Lactobacillus and apple juice, then gets balanced with Fat Tire-inspired malty sweetness and a slight herbal bitterness. Nice ride, HUB!

August 25th, 2016 - I'm not sure who Hopworks Urban Brewery is but they're bring some...curious flavors to New Belgium's flagship brew. Sour apple? Not usually a welcome taste in beer. And I admit that this is the case here. Though the color is mostly the same as the normal Fat Tire, it reeks of candied apple, though not tart and crisp like a green apple. More sweet and candy like. The flavor goes light on the apple flavor, thankfully, and balances better than I expected with the Fat Tire notes. Not a candied apple brew, but a sweet brew nevertheless.

Pours out to a slightly hazy light amber forming a modest off-white head with average retention and poor lacing. The nose smells like Old apple juice and lacto. Mouthfeel is quite tart, medium light body. I get the Grain husk/biscuit malt character of the fat tire. Basically it taste like a fat tire infected with lacto finishing dry, very tart, bitterness is accentuated owing to dryness. Not my cup of tea. The sour and bitter do not mix Well. Instant heartburn. Drain pour.

12 oz. bottle poured into tulip.
A- Copper in color. Clarity is near-clear. Head is white, delicate. Lacing is wispy and light.
S- Green apple, lacto tang. But supported by a sweet, bready backbone.
T- Apple and lacto tang, with a mildly bready balance. Sweet.
M- Medium body. Some good tang, but sweetness cuts the pucker. Mildly dry finish.
O- Very nice. Very candy-like in the apple, but with that nice bready note it gives a good twist into that sour beer world.

Poured from 12-ounce bottle into a SA Perfect Pour glass. Attractive apple-juice color, with a thick white head that stayed around for a few minutes, leaving some spotty lacing. Aromas and flavors of light malt, caramel, and tart apple. The tartness is somewhat muted and not at all overpowering. Medium-light mouthfeel, with a crisp finish. Pleasantly drinkable, good beer with food.

My New Belgium horizontal that I am conducting as part of the eradication of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody is beginning to wind down. I was at the FGBS last evening for a New Belgium Etch-a-Glass Night & my sometimes trivia partner, Sister Disco, won a bicycle! I began this home stretch with a revisitation of good ol' Fat Tire Amber Ale to kind of set a baseline as this series is predicated on that beer. The remaining five (5), including this one, are all variations on that theme in collaboration with other breweries, in this case, Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB).
From the bottle: "Our heroes at HUB pedaled Fat Tire straight to the apple orchard. This slightly sour homage starts out with a snap of tartness, courtesy of Lactobacillus and apple juice, then gets balanced with Fat Tire-inspired malty sweetness and a slight herbal bitterness. Nice ride, HUB!
I am SO happy with my etched NB glass! It reads "Bro. Woody drinks New Belgium beer!" & I am getting it seasoned nicely since its creation last night. I Pop!ped the cap & despite it being a fresh bottle, I have begun to embrace a gentle pour followed by an in-glass swirl. This caused the rise of two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, tawny head with decent retention that left light lacing in its wake as it fell. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was redolent with apple, but it smelled more tart than sour (and the two are NOT interchangeable!). I felt like I also smelled a light cinnamon spiciness, like an apple pie made with Granny Smith apples vice the standard Red Delicious. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. I got my first draught in my mouth and allowed it to just roll around on my tongue. I would still argue for "tart" versus "sour" since I got a light puckering of my lips, but not the tang at the hinge of my jaw that signifies the latter. It had a pleasant apple flavor, reminiscent of Jolly Rancher Sour Apple candies, but not as intense as the candies. I really liked it in sum since I am more of a hophead and this was along my speed in terms of the style. Finish was lightly tart, refreshing and an interesting take on Fat Tire, especially with its inherent apple flavor.

12 oz. Bottle
Pours a pretty nice yellow/amber color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy/foamy white head, which leaves some sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, malty, yeasty, some funk, tart, citrus, apples. The taste is hoppy, malty, citrusy, funky, tart, apples. Medium body. Overall, a pretty tasty brew.

A: Pours a clear bright golden amber in color with moderate to heavy amounts of active visible carbonation rising to the surface of the beer and a faint amount of copper highlights. The beer has a finger tall foamy light beige head that reduces to a large patch of mottled tin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Moderate aromas of grainy + caramel malts with light to moderate aromas of tart apples. Hints of floral hops.
T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of slightly sweet grainy + caramel + toasted malts. That is followed by moderate flavors of slightly tart apple and just a hint of yogurt-like sourness. Finally there is a light flavor of floral hops in the finish which imparts only a hint of bitterness. There is a light lingering tartness through the finish.
M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly crisp upfront.
O: An interesting beer - the hybrid of Fat Tire, apple juice, and very light amounts of lacto tartness. Not sure that I would want to have more than one of these at a session but I'm glad that I finally got around to trying it. Easy to drink and reminds me of a slightly less sweet sparkling apple cider (non-alcoholic).

Bottle into a tulip appears clear golden copper with a creamy white topping that fades leaving spotty lace.
Aroma is cheesy with mild lemony accent before a slight grain backing.
Taste is tart and lemony with cereal grain and apple-like fruitiness.
Light in body with moderate carbonation. The lightest and most refreshing/easy drinking fat tire redux but still not something id want to buy again.

12/16...pours clear gold, light white foam. Citrus tart nose. Grainy. Light malty taste, some apple tart but very faint. Musty, almost stale taste, like old apple cider thats been watered down. Just so so. Not the best from Friends pack.
