NEW BELGIUM – VOODOO RANGER DOUBLE IPA – AMERICAN DOUBLE IPA
Appearance – The appearance on this ale is very similar if not identical to the standard Ranger IPA. The body is a clear, almost shiny orange in color with a nice white head.

Smell – The nose is muted here and has no suggestion of a DIPA. There is a moderate pine aroma after big swirls but little malt and not a lot of complexity in the hop profile.

Taste – The hop hammer falls at the taste. It is much more complex upon drinking with a big pine and orange flavor and a juicy malt backbone.

Mouthfeel – A solid medium-bodied with some strong drying and a lingering hop finish.

Drinkability – This is a true DIPA that lost points for the lame nose. I’d like to see a dry-hopper version of this or the use of some more floral hopping. Otherwise it is a solid entry to the style.

12 ounce bottle poured into a tulip glass.

L---Clear, dark golden color. Thick, white head that quickly reduced to a cap. Left excellent lacing.

S---Pine, tropical & citrus fruits. Mango & grapefruit.

T---A good chunk of resin. Pine follows from nose, but fruits are more muted.

F---Tastes like it should be stickier than it actually is. More juicy than anything. A light bit of acidic burn in the back of the mouth. Alcohol is noticeable.

O---Could be smoother and more balanced. Not a bad beer by any means, but not one I'll seek out.

Pours out clear pale gold in color. The head a slightly off-white with very good retention. Seeing some decent lacing.

Lots of pine in the nose. Smells a bit mossy. Picking up some grains and maybe some grapefruit. All in all pretty aromatic.

Very piney but with a good amount of malts to pack in up. Bitterness is way up there. The sweetness is more of a malty one if anything. Not fruity.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with medium carbonation. Feels a bit oily. Sticks to the palate.

Look - very clear golden color - 2 finger head - dissipates rapidly, but a nice foam ring continues on

Smell - At first it smelled funky and almost bad, but then many hop notes come through: pine, floral, citrus, cattiness, pineapple, mango

Taste - hop bitterness is pretty powerful (as expected) but not overpowering. Fruit flavors rush in and previously mentioned hop aroma. Biscuit/cracker/bready malt comes in briefly

Feel - lighter bodied - not as active as hoped for

Overall - It's an ok beer. Decent bite and powerful hops. Somewhat funky. Not my favorite IIPA. I don't believe that I would buy this one again. It's decent on occasion.

Voodoo ranger pours a copper color, nice long lasting head. Earthy aroma. Flavor is earthy base, wet hop notes. Good body and feel. Overall, pretty decent and big.

Solid IIPA for the price at local corner store $10/6pck
Very comparable to 90 minute (DFH)
Strong malty caramel, canned mandarin notes balanced with easy bitterness and citrus aroma from hops.
