Can't hold up to a good Czech pilsener but it's ok. Simply stirred my desire for an Urquell or Budvar. Czech Pils is one of my favorite styles but this is not a great effort from New Belgium.

This isn’t a bad Czech pils. Great appearance. Crystal clear and nice carbonation level. Taste is a little flat - I wonder what the base malt is in this? It doesn’t pop like a typical Czech pils. It almost seems like a US malt, rather than European Pilsner malt.

Poured from 12oz bottle into pilsner glass

A thin white head drops quickly with moderate lacing. Color hazy golden with some streaming carbonation. Aroma of biscuit, yeast, and fruity hops. Mouthfeel is light and frothy. Fairly crisp and dry finish. Flavors of biscuit, lightly toasted barley, with hop flavors of grass and mild citrus. It's no Pilsner Urguell, but a fine example of the style nonetheless.

Pint at Denver airport with Lisa. Just OK, petty bland, even for a Pils. Good looking beer, but not much in the nose or taste. Nothing wrong with it either... Easy drinking beer beer.

Has this replaced Blue Paddle Pilsener? It is so difficult to parse out all of the comings & goings in craft beer these days. Oh, well, time marches on.

From the bottle: "Brewed in the traditional Czech style for a deeply refreshing flavor with a hint of malty sweetness."

Having Pop!ped the cap, I decided to go with a heavy-handed pour, just to see what would happen. It created two fingers of dense, rocky, foamy, bone-white head that slowly imploded in on itself. Color was the sort of Yellow-Gold that causes The Gelt Gang of Mammon, Midas & Croesus to drop in for a visit, especially given its NE-quality clarity. Nose was very biscuity, quite malty & frankly, I was hoping for a more Noble hop presence. This was evocative of the malting room at some breweries, but was it what I would want to drink? Mouthfeel was medium, big for any Lager-style beer. The taste remained malty sweet as its prevalence. Hmm. I tend to think of the Czech Pils as being more Noble hop forward, but this did not have that kind of presence. Finish was semi-sweet, refreshing, but nothing worth seeking out. I suddenly miss the old Blue Paddle.

Draft at New Belgium Hub, DIA.
Bright gold, steady plume of rising champagne bubbles. Drippy arcs of lacing, lasting surface coverage. Aroma is lightly bready, lemony and crackery. Taste is lightly sweet and malty, crisp and smooth body. Dry finish with a vague herbal hop note. Overall it's a pretty good rendition, and very drinkable in hot weather.

L: brilliant straw filled with streams of rapidly rising bubbles under a 1/2" white foam collar with good retention

S: Spicy, herbal hop aromas are most noticeable followed by light bread dough

T: flavors start slightly sweet with cracker and a trace of biscuit leading to a moderate hop bitterness and a trace of tartness on the finish with a little pear flavor and some spicy herb

F: starts with a little prickle but is creamy and smooth with medium body and medium high carbonation

O: This is a very nice, refreshing Pilsner, perfect for hot summer afternoons.

When New Belgium changed the name from Blue Paddle to just "Pilsener" they def. changed the recipe. This has plummeted significantly from its previous stellar location. Now just tastes wimpy and almost like a step above Budweiser (says DL).
