On draught at Old Chicago.

Pours black with a small head of tannish foam.

Smells of grapefruit, roasted malt, bitter chocolate.

Taste is strong hop bitterness, roasted malt, dark chocolate, hint of anise. Boozy.

Nice medium mouthfeel.

Very nice but I won't visit it often or maybe again.

Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served in a pitch black color with a two finger head of off white foam. The head fades slowly over time leaving just a trace of spider web lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is a nice mix of roasty and hoppy, with tons of pine and herbal hop. The aroma is awesome in hoppy nature and really allows the hop to shine. Along with the nice hop, are some lighter notes of caramel and a bit of molasses, which with the darker aromas, creates an exciting but warming smell.
Taste – While the nose was super piney and herbal, the taste was not so much upfront. The start the taste was big of a caramel and molasses with a moderate showing of a roasty taste, with a bit of coffee and toast. There was a light herbal and pine taste upfront, which grew stronger and stronger as the taste advanced. With the increase in the herbal and pine hop comes some light citrus hop tastes as well, along with a little bit of an increase in the roastiness. In the end, a light level of smoke comes to the tongue, leaving one with a more dankly hopped, roasty, and lightly sweetened, but not overly sweet, balanced taste, to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the moderate, to lightly thicker side, with a carbonation level that is a bit on the lower side. For the big abv, dark flavors, and decent dank hop tastes, the feel is banging it, and makes for a slower sipper that allows all the flavors to show themselves well.
Overall – This is a fantastic dark IPA. It is balanced, easy drinking (but not too easy drinking for the abv), and has a great balance of dank hop and sweet. It is overall spot on. I hope New Belgium keeps this a regular. I think a black IPA is a hard thing to brew well, and most I have not been super fond of, but this one is fantastic!!
