12 ounce can into signature globe glass; canned on 3/17/2019, best before 7/28/2019. Pours slightly hazy pale golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big juicy/tart/tangy passion fruit juice, fruit skin/seeds, tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, red apple, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berries, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, wood, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of passion fruit juice, citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops, pale malts, and light-moderate fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big juicy/tart/tangy passion fruit juice, fruit skin/seeds, tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, red apple, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berries, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, wood, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness; and fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy passion fruit juice, fruit skin/seeds, tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, red apple, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berries, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit, wood, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of passion fruit juice, citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops, pale malts, and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness and tart/tangy fruit balance; with no astringent hop/fruit flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and tart/tangy fruit. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and fairly acidic/tangy/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.3%. Overall this is an excellent fruited Kolsch. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of passion fruit juice, citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops, pale malts, and light-moderate fruity yeast flavors; very smooth, refreshing, and fairly crisp/clean to drink with the modestly bitter/tart/tangy drying finish. Very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Great Nugget, Azacca, Calypso profile. Great balance between juicy/vibrant hops/fruit, with some dank/earthy notes; great clean pale malt backbone, restrained fruity yeast, and minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on base style example. Not overwhelming on any aspect, pretty much perfectly balanced between all flavors.

a weird choice for these guys to brew i think, seems kind of cheap and forced, they have been doing better lately in my experience, and this seems like a regression of sorts. the beer is crystal clear, holds an inch of white head, and looks beautiful actually. the nose is lots of passion fruit, watered down german malt, and a certain metallic property i cant make sense of. sweet a little bit up front in the flavor, dried out and refreshing by the end though. the passion fruit seems natural when the beer is cold, but not so much when it warms up in the glass. my real issue here is that the fruit takes over the kolsch, its so light to begin with, that it loses its identity to the fruit, not enough malt character or german yeast, two things i definitely want to taste first and foremost in this style, so to lose them i think is a flaw. that said, its easy drinking if you want something fruity and light, and the carbonation is excellent. somewhat safe and uninspired, which is what i have been critical of with these guys, but not a bad beer from an objective standpoint.

A: crystal clear; pale gold in color; 1 finger ivory head that receded to a wispy cap; little lacing;

S: quite aromatic; loads of passion fruit;

T: the passion fruit is balanced by grain; a touch of tartness; no bitterness;

M: light bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: very nice for a fruit beer;

With a broad spectrum, mass marketed appeal, the brewers of New Belgium set their sights on a summer beer with the help of the always seductive passionfruit for a tropical exotic overlay to a standard foundation of flavor.

Hazy gold and topped with a creamy white froth, the beer looks the Kolsch-styled ale well aside from its heavy pectin fog. Fruit aromas abound in of course the passionfruit family with juicy hints of tartness, wine, citrus and that special zing that only tropical fruits provide. To taste, the early impressions of bread and dough along with a cereal grain sweetness coats the tongue with a non-descript blonde ale-euro later-cerveza beeriness.

As the hybrid beer steps through a light grassy and herbal bitterness and a slightly floral flavor, its crispness and refreshment is offset by a cereal creaminess that's reminiscent of cream ale. With enough fruit tartness, the senses want to draw on a more sour and crisper taste that seems to be sorely lacking with a merely adequate light beer character.
