Strangely enough, this is the first craft beer I tasted. I still think, years later, that it is the best I've had. Unfortunately, it is not generally available.

"Giddy Up is a delicious juxtaposition of coffee, sustainably grown in Brazil and espresso roasted locally, pressed into an ale with the deep color of a copper cowboy kettle. First whiff is full of sweet caramel, toffee, latte. Then, a hint of lemon scone flavor from the addition of lemon peel. Body is creamy, resonant of espresso, yet the finish is bright, even a bit frisky. An ale to git along with..." Brewed in the style of an American Amber Ale with Lemon peel and espresso added. Previously available as a summer seasonal beer, re-released within the 2013 Folly Variety pack. Available in 12 oz. bottles.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a New Belgium globe glass. Served above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pours a crisp fizzy frothed ecru-beige head over a moderate cola brown body with plentiful assertive carbonation. Retention is average at best and lacing is light and spotty. The aroma is rife with rich earthy espresso beans and creamy cacao nibs whose richness is somewhat countered by a mellow herbal hop and a touch of faint citrus rind. The aromatic potency is moderately high. The flavor reveals an ever slightly more reserved impact of the espresso and chocolate for a notable lightness of the body, meanwhile the subtle flavors of lemon peel still have difficulty peeking through the flavorful curtain of coffee beans, and the hops are best noted in the finish, slightly earthy bitter, pairs nicely with the mild acidic coffee bean finish. The sweetness is fairly understated with a light body to match which makes this beer a decent session option. The texture is slick, oily and slightly chewy. Carbonation generates a moderate crispness for a moderate frothy mouthfeel. The body is medium+ for the style, medium+ among all beers. Balance is moderately earthy bitter over sweet. While I didn't feel that the Lemon Peel angle fit in fairly amongst the more potent espresso and cacao characters, coffee lovers are certain to find some enjoyment in this tasty and highly drinkable pick-me-up beer. Worth seeking out based on its originality and enjoyable flavor.

A - Giddy Up! is a dark copper colored beer that has a fleeting off-white head which leaves little lace. It's dark color makes clarity difficult to see but when held up to the light, small carbonation bubbles can be seen fleeing to the surface.

S - Boisterous espresso evaporates into the nostrils with haste, gently balanced by a smooth touch of toffee and slightly overdone toast.

T - Like the aroma suggests, Giddy Up! is big on the espresso but, it's toasted malt base is light, not beefy like, say, a stout, so the lovely coffee flavor is there but not over the top. While lemon peel is devoid in the aroma, sweet lemon bar notes along with a touch of caramel traipse through the background.

M - Giddy Up!'s lighter body lends itself well to the bold flavor of the infused espresso as the dainty carbonation pours over the tongue, drying the palate out for a balanced finish that's neither bitter nor sweet.

O - It's not often you'll find coffee in a beer other than a porter or stout and, on the occasion you might, they can certainly be hit or miss. After all, pairing coffee's bold flavors with something other than the complimentary chocolaty profile of roasted malts can be tough. New Belgium's Giddy Up! pulls off a non-stout coffee beer wonderfully though! Espresso through and through, this lighter bodied, easier drinking toasted amber brew is just the thing to perk you up!

It taste amazing. I'm never reviewed a beer before but tasting it made me login so I can give this beer 5 stars.

Pours a brown with some garnet highlights. Nonexistent head but only a wisp of what was.

First aroma for me is sour to tart before coffee bean rises up out of the terroir. Some burnt caramel notes as well.

Mixed bag of ale, malt, coffee grounds and citrus. Medium roast coffee rises first followed by pale hop with a twist of lemon peel. Bordering on bitter sour. Astringent with some acrid bitterness.

Medium mouthfeel yet feels light hearted due to the citrus. Carbonation is flatlining leaving the feel somewhat creamy.

A 4.5 for effort here that wanes among a small gathering. Fun to try at a tasting for something different. This might be fun to try in a red-eye to give the coffee more base. Just reiterating, a 3 on this site is OK. Not horrible, jus not my cup of coffee. Coffee and lemon belong in the Turkish cup of pure joe in Madagascar.

Served in a glass from the bottle.

A - nice deep amber color. Head dissipates quickly but a thin layer of foam remains. Moderate lacing.

T- lemon and coffee are apparent. Slightly plithy. Weak coffee finish accompanied by slight hippy bitterness.

M - nothing special. Moderate carbonation with very little bubbles.

O - very easy drinker and a fine beer for many occasions. It is a crowd pleaser and didn't stand out to me as anything special.

S - coffee is very apparent and dominates the smell. Its a shame because I did not get that from the taste. It was almost sweet.

Appearance - Nice deep red amber that supports a luscious cream colored head of a finger and a half

Smell - The espresso is readily apparent and some mild earthy hops come as well, the sweetness from the malts is still present under the more forward aromas, the lemon peel gives a very light astringent citrus bite

Taste - My surprise here is when the lemon overtook the espresso in the race, here the front taste is hit more with the bitter pith of the peel and then quickly followed by the malt and espresso, not exactly a bad combination, but not one that really complements itself

Mouthfeel - medium body, the malts give a nice lingering sugary coating on the tongue and spices finish it clean

Overall - I like the take on this brew, kind of blending summer and winter beer elements into one, not sure when I'd like it better though. I'd keep a spare 6-er of this around but I wouldn't have it in a session

12oz bottle with a date. bottle swiped out of a buddies NB sampler pack. poured into globe, review from notes

Light amber color with not much head or lacing to note. smell is like a light wheat beer but with touches of coffee and lemon. taste is light lemony wheat beer infused with roast and coffee grounds.

interesting beer that actually worked. not sure i'd develop a taste for this, but it was worth trying.

Saturated copper color, good clarity, some rising carbonation visible. Frothy collar of tan foam, spindly lace in the glass. Good surface coverage, creamy surface texture.

Earthy aroma of mild coffee, odd yeastiness.

Coffee is present in the taste, though subdued and mellow. Earthy mellow coffee and light toasted malt. Carbed a little high, it feels frothy across the palate. Overall its fun to try this retro beer, but wasn't all that exciting.

Pours ruby brown with a thin to wispy off-white head. Trailing lace drapes down the glass.

The smell is of lemon, floral notes, mint, spiced bread, roasted coffee.

The taste is of medium, approaching dark, malt (dark toffee), roasted mild coffee, hint of tangy lemon. Spicy, dry-ish finish.

It is smooth, effervescent/spritzy, but not fizzy. It leaves a fresh, pleasant aftertaste.

This is a unique beer - blends a malty character with coffee and lemon, without the porter/stout character - more towards amber ale (as it is categorized). Didn't know by the description if it would work, but it sure does!

How can a beer be retired if I'm drinking it now? ROTFLMAO I just picked up a variety 12 pack of New Belgium at the local Jewel Osco. Nice surprise to find a supposed retired beer. I'm new to the review thing so bare with me. Taste good, smells good, head good, lacing good.

Appearance: I was extremely shocked…bright orange, very odd for an espresso beer. The closest thing I've seen is Dogfish Head's chocolate beer that is also orange.

Smell: Strong scent of chocolate and espresso. The smells sneak up on you with the color.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Another odd combination that works: espresso and lemon. The coffee is extremely evident and perks you up, but the lemon cleans the palate while still keeping you interested. Light-medium body.

Overall: One of the strangest combinations, but very well-balanced.

BA is telling me that this is retired already? Well, I hope she's fresh. She apparently came from a Fall Sampler Pack. Thank you, Dustin, for beer running in PA.

Very dark for an amber ale. Looks brown-red with good clarity. Foam amounted to half a finger, but it has a nice light tan color. Doesn't grip the glass wall too firmly.

Has a very standardized amber ale aroma. Toasted cereal, some mucky roast, something that could be attributed to light coffee, English toffee, earthiness in the presence of mild hopping, and some oxidation. Not picking up any real evidence of citrus or lemon, for that matter.

Quite bland for a beer called 'Giddy Up!'. I pick up a very restrained nuance of coffee, but not a true flavor of espresso. Maybe, coffee grounds. Hardly worth speaking about. The main components to the taste are aged malt grains, toast, English mustiness, browned apple, cardboard, and a light shandy-like note that insists that lemon peel is noticeable.

Nice wooly body with a good mouth of peppery carbonation that doesn't exceed its limits. Just a nice round feel.

Disappointing, but perhaps freshness is what's lacking here. Won't have another chance to give this the 'go-round'.

Pours a ruby red-brown with attractive and tall head. Lace is lovely and lattice-like.

Nose is malty and a little roasty. I get plenty of autumnal notes (appropriate as this is part of the Fall 2013 Folly Pack). There's caramel, wet leaves, and a definite touch of coffee.

Taste is sweet and malty, with coffee up front and a hint of citrus (lemongrass) under the palate. I get a cola-type vibe here, as the coffee isn't over-the-top, though it is present and accounted for. Body seems thin. My overall impression, oddly -- flat cola!

Overall, fair enough as an edgy brown ale, but not one I'd revisit.

Giddy Up! pours a brown color with a large creamy lacing head. There is a full aroma with strong cold pressed coffee flavors. The taste is similar, bold cold pressed coffee flavors. Good full flavors, good body, and nice carbonation. Overall a very nice coffee flavored beer.

A- Dark ruby red color. 2 finger head on top. good lacing too.

S- Coffee bean aroma up front. A really great strong espresso smell. There is a hint of citrus hiding behind there.

T- It's an interesting flavor. The lemon peel is the flavor that really stands out to me. it's like an amber version of a Shocktop with a hint of roasted flavor.

M- It's solid on the palate. Very smooth.

O- This is a pretty good one. Super easy to drink. Has a nice just enough complexity to give it a well rounded rating.

Pours a copper brown color with a soapy off white head.

Smells of coffee and cream with a hint of lemon and some sweet malty aromas.

Up front the taste is bitter with coffee grinds, followed by a smooth caramel malt flavor with just a hint of lemon on the finish.

It's kind of light bodied with moderate carbonation and a crisp finish.

Overall it's a good beer. Interesting take on a coffee beer that I really enjoyed.

not retired at all, but back in the folly mix box this fall. ale brewed with lemon peel and infused with espresso. a noble concept, and it works. like the best espressos of Italy, with lemon zest and black Sambuca, this captures a lot of that. nice color, more red than brown, especially for a coffee ale. half inch of tan foam dies fast. it smells heavenly, like real stiff espresso shots and ale yeast, a surprisingly delicious combination. the flavor is excellent too, clean coffee on the font end, with the acidity coming from the lemon, not the coffee. the lemon is tart and puckery, and it wipes the palate sort of clean before the swallow. im left with an almost chalky malty finish, quite good really. not enough body for me here though, I need a little more heft with a coffee beer, and the soda-like carbonation is unbecoming, it makes it seem young and restless rather than mature and wise, like a kid that's had espresso, not some cobweb covered old professorial type who knows how to handle a few shots. still, the aromatic experience alone makes this a winner, and the unique blend of ingredients is well put together. drinkable enough, and a nice little energy lift comes mid bottle. I like it.

Poured from a bottle into a Nonic glass, it appeared a dark amber, almost brown color. The smell was heavy on the espresso, with a slight hint of citrus. The mouth feel was pretty normal with a fair bit of carbonation. As far as taste goes, I was pretty unimpressed. It didn't really taste like a beer, but more like watery espresso with a hint of lemon. The hops were virtually non existant, and the maltiness really didn't come through either. This is a beer I would recommend for people who don't like beer.

Appearance - Pours a mud brown color that turns ruby red when held to light. The head is a sandstone color, one finger width and has fair retention, resulting in a broken layer of suds across the surface. The lacing is small and spotty, with fair stick.

Smell - Strong coffee aroma supported with light notes of chocolate, caramel and a hint of lemon.

Taste - No surprises here. Deep coffee character makes up the bulk of the flavor profile, while moderate notes of chocolate and caramel round out the front end. Traces of lemon zest can be found on the tongue in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Light in body with fair carbonation. Not much to it, but it's easy to drink.

Overall - A nice coffee infused ale from New Belgium. If they brought this back permanently, I'd probably buy it a few times a year. As is, I'm glad I got to try it as their featured 'Revival' brew.

Bottle pour at the Protest Bottle Share For LA Beer Week held at Red Carpet Wine in Glendale, CA.

Best before 11/24/13.

Pours a clear light copper with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, coffee, and espresso aromas. Taste is much the same with coffee and espresso flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that tastes more like a coffee flavored soda than beer in my opinion.

This is an interesting brew. It pours a amber-tan caramel color, almost like a watered down cup of coffee or a cold brewed tea, topped with a creamy slightly cocoa colored foaming.

The lemon notes contrast well with the espresso characteristics. The aroma has a slight coffee with lemony squeeze character. This combination comes out with much more prominence as I taste it.

There’s not an overwhelming “coffee” character to this, which leads me to think there’s more options for coffee and beer combinations than just the usual stouts and porters.

Poured into snifter.

A Dark mahogany. No transparency. Thick lingering tan head and lacing down the glass.

S Fresh cut grass. Zesty, citric aroma. Coffee. Hint of burnt malt, pepper, and hops.

T Very forward with the coffee. Sweet toffee and followed by a lemony tartness.

M Medium. A bit chewy with some fizzy carbonation. Easy finish.

O Good coffee beer. Unique. The coffee and lemon go quite well together. The flavor is layered and complex. My only complaint is that the lemon overpowers any hoppy bitterness that may be there. All in all very good brew.

Smooth, lighty roasted coffee, light caramel/toffee malts.

Medium body, easy drinking, fizzy, foamy, mild carbonation.

A well done beer, the coffee is certainly the focus, but is not over done.

Poured a dark reddish brown somewhat clear color with two fingers of khaki tan head. Decent amount of even circular lacing along the sides of the glass. Above average retention.

Smelled roasted coffee malts, espresso, dark chocolate, burnt toast, caramel and toffee. Coffee really dominates.

Tasted similar to the nose. Initially got roasty coffee malts, espresso, coffee beans, roasty nuts, toast, toffee and caramel. More like a porter than an amber in my opinion.

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average-to-soft carbonation. Smooth finish.

A pretty decent beer really. Beer Advocate has it as an American Amber/Red Ale, but I see it more as a porter.
