Voodoo Ranger Captain Dynamite IPAVoodoo Ranger Captain Dynamite IPA
Notes: Captain Dynamite IPA is locked, stocked and fully hopped, and he’s here to drink beer and kick ass, and he’s all out of beer. This hazy IPA is juiced with Mosaic, Simcoe, and Cascade hops and exploding with tropical flavors and aromas.

12 oz can with an August 2021 BB date stamped on the bottom.
Appearance. This is a slightly hazy, light amber ale with a very good white head that leaves ample lacing sticking to the glass.
Aroma. Complex with a prominent pine note.
Flavor. Very well balanced with a particularly harmonious mix in which a significant amount of grain flavor joins the hops.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with carbonation that's both lively and soft.
Overall. An outstanding member of the Voodoo family.

Purchased a six pack cans. Pours a hazy honey amber with a full creamy head. Smell is of herbal hops with a dash of onion. Sugary malts round out the aroma. Mainly juicy flavors; orange peel and lemon zest. Fairly thin tasting. Not my favorite in the Voodoo Ranger series.

Enough with the Voodoo Rangers variations already. Too confusing to remember what I've had or what the variations are. Recall the first Voodoo version I had was fairly good but latest offers seem to be a trend in decline. Found this one to be quite tame with little character and just another IPA blend. How did NB go from a steady Fat Tire brew to an endless supply of Skull IPAs..Boooo.

Slight haze on the Lush and sudsy mouthfeel. So sweet-- or did they dose it with sugar? Yet there is an emerging bitter aftertaste to counteract some of the sweetness. Sill it's the honey taste with that partially leashed bitterness that is not my personal favorite. Tastes and smells of citrus, canned peaches, honeysuckle, and more.

Soooo fruity. Maybe it's too much of a good thing, but at least it's clean and doesn't try for the milkshake or Orange Julius style. Goes down very easy. And at 7.7% it's a cost-effective buzz bomb. From the 12 oz can purchased on the West Coast. I like that the date is 02 May 2021-- tomorrow.

Picked-up a six pack of cans at Bradford's in Plymouth for about fourteen dollars. Have had a few brews from these guys before. Did not really care for this at all, very pungent, not well made. I am not a fan of this Brewery.

12 oz can with best before dating of "23 May 2021" stamped on the bottom.

Juiced up pour, with about a medium haze level and under a lasting medium bubble cap.

Ripe stone fruit sniff.

Respectable NEIPA produced by a larger craft brewer....more stone fruit notes abounding, with medium sweetness, balanced by some resiny hops in the finish....better then decent, respectable everyday kinda NEIPA

From the bottom of the can: "25 JUL 2021 1211 210301011V 18163"

Appearance: The body is opaque and beige-orange. The head is large and white with a thick, creamy head. Very good retention and lacing.

Aroma: It has a big aroma of tangerine, grapefruit, and blood orange.

Taste: Up front there is quite a bit of cabbage-like flavor with some broccoli stem character. Towards the middle of the mouth it has a light grassy character mixed with some orange pith.

Mouthfeel: The can simply states directly that this is an "IPA" and BA states that this is a New England IPA. It seems to attempt something closer to a New England IPA but more bitter and a bit less drinkable.

Overall: The beer wasn't that great; it does have some juicy aroma but it falls dead flat on the tongue with vegetable and grass character. There isn't much character in the body. I don't recommend it. I wouldn't buy it again.

Not really familiar with the VR series but there are so many I thought that they must be decent. And New Belgium knows how to brew beer.
Won’t rehash the color of the beer and head but I found it perfectly appropriate for the style. The aroma was effectively lost on me, maybe my sniffer isn’t working right now. I could only smell a spring clean sort of aroma.
The taste was more nuanced than most of today’s IPAs, no one hop took dominant position. So it was quite tasty but not particularly refreshing.
The feel was good, quite good.
Glad I tried it, but probably won’t buy it again as there are many others I prefer. But this is likely right up somebody’s alley.

-medium orange can pour with a thin cap of fine white foam and a light aroma with peach and tangerine notes.
The flavor has both sweet citrus notes and some grapefruit. Some pine stickiness adds interest. The hop bitterness is low to moderate and is noted late.
I like this VR version more than others I have had.

12oz can from Albertsons. Orange golden pour, soft, bubbly head. Hoppy aroma, earthy, dank, tropical. Funky, to say the least. Taste follows the aroma, tropical fruit, citrus. Kind of all over the place. I'm not digging it.

12 oz. Can Best By June 2021

Hazy brown-orange, one finger fine white head reduces to small islands, partial ring and spotty lacing.
Pleasing tangerine, mango aromas.
Pineapple, pine, lemon, pepper flavors.
Very bitter for an NEIPA, dry, light body, low carbonation.
Odd disconnect between aroma and flavor. Not bad at all but not the best use of these hops.

Hazy right from the tap. Lots of fruit aroma. I burned out on Heavy hops and fruit long ago and there is nothing here that I
Haven’t had many times over. Still, it decent beer, if it it weren’t for the grapefruit kick, a flavor I don’t care for I might even drink more than one.

L- Brown and red tinged dull amber orange color with a few cream colored small specks in a clouded out 90% opaque beer. Foam is 3F and off shite in color.

N- Pine, yeast, grapefruit juice

T- Smooth grapefruit juice with a kick of west coast bitter pine hops. Not sweet and not tart, the thymol like bitter hops take the upper hand. Aftertaste is alcohol and pine and grapefruit rind bitterness.

M- Medium with a smooth character, not slick or cloying. Astringent dry thymol, pine and alcohol on the finish.

O- Expected a lot more balance out of this ranger. Presents a rather piney and bitter vibe on a smooth rather fruit oriented malt. Should appeal to the west coast pine hop devotees. I prefer a bit more balance or less bitterness.

On tap in a 20 ounce mug.

Cloudy light golden amber color, white cap that’s modest yet leaves heavy ring lacing.

Earthy, herbal, citrus and sweet fruits.

Malty, dank and citrus hop flavors. Tropical notes on the back side.

Smooth medium body. On tap carbonation was perfect. Strong yet pleasing hop finish.

Very well balanced between hops, malts, and a touch of neipa juices.

From a 12oz can:

Appearance: Hazy, particles, yellow gold, ok head.

Smell: Danky, citrus.

Taste: Mild citrus, mild sweetness, bready malt underneath. Seems pretty balanced with the breadiness. Gets sweeter as it warms up.

Overall: Pretty good IPA. Not a OJ bomb, actually shows some balance and malty flavor. I don't always enjoy the VR series or other New Belgium IPAs, but this was worth trying.

Bottom of can is stamped 06June2021. I'm not really sure what that means anymore. 4 month lead-time? Who knows. Just put a born-on date, ya geeks. Anyway...

Body is a nice honeyed-orange. Slightly turbid, but by no means hazy. Smell is sweet ripe oranges, slightly perfume-y, a hint of alcohol. Candied citrus too; very sweet smelling. Tastes of oranges and dense, unleavened bread. Cracker-y malt on the back end. Dry finish, medium carbonation. Citrus sort of lingers on the back of the palette. Pleasant enough, but nothing special.

Poured into a tall clear pint glass. Appearance has a hazy amber color, with about a finger's worth of head with good retention and lacing.

Aroma consists of grapefruit, peach, pineapple, lemon, orange, banana, bready malts, mango, papaya, and kiwi.

Taste is fruity and tropical, and very malty. Citrus notes dominate the taste, predominately orange and lemon, while also tasting a good amount of peach too. The bread malts make even with the sweetness of the fruity notes. Body is medium-light.

Not their best in this series. Very piney, hints of citrus and hops. But I get some melon, and mostly pale malt sweetness. I also detect high bitterness. Which is not bad, but doesn't balance out with hops, which take second place in relation to the pine forward taste. Good mouthfeel. For the ABV, there is no alcohol detected. Good IPA for the price.

Hazy with definite yeast clusters suspended in the liquid. The color is darker gold. Modest head which recedes rapidly but I'm pleased with the amount of streaks for lacing.

The smell features an awkwardly "off" earthiness. It improves on subsequent whiffs--I get mostly malt with a touch of hop pellet.

The flavor is a step up from the smell--I don't get the same level of freshly tilled soil. Instead, I get a thinnish (both in body and taste) malt base. The hop is balancing but not distinctive. There is a mild bite which reminds me of citrus rind. The carbonation is high which lowers the mouthfeel significantly. Overall, this beer is missing some of the basics I expect from an American IPA.

i cant believe this series is not only still going but thriving, the branding is rough, who are these resonating with? fortunately this time the beer is pretty solid, not an overly unique mix of hops, but the come together in a way that stands out a little to me, tropical and citrus forward but not generic, more from the mosaic than the canned pineapple thing i always get from it, and less intense grapefruit zest and pith from the simcoe than is common, leaving room for nuances like lime and sweet orange and even a flash of coconut to me, also some northwestern dankness and a little oiliness to the feel, just a bit of bitterness too, pretty full spectrum on the hops and overall well done with them. this tastes fresh and bright, its hazy in the glass but not dull or dense, and the head and carbonation are both real active and enlivening. as it warms i get more from the grain, some white wheat likely, good balance without any sweetness, clean fermentation too. i get some stone fruit character late as well, a little peach or something to close it out, pretty dynamic overall and definitely one of the better beers this series has produced so far...

New Belgium Brewing Co. "Voodoo Ranger Captain Dynamite IPA"
12 fl. oz. can coded "23 MAY 2021 1247 210 103011V 39541". Sampled on 03 March 2021
$2.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: There are so many IPAs from New Belgium now that I can't even keep up. Which one is this? It doesn't really say anything on the label other than 7.7%ABV. Let's find out exactly what it is. It's poured a cloudy golden orange body beneath a full head of bright white foam. The aroma is pretty strong, which is nice, and it's citrusy and tropical. On to the taste... well, not surprisingly it's citrusy and tropical within a basic, sweetish malt base. There's some bitterness to it, and a little bit of alcohol. As for the citrus and other tropical fruit I'm thinking lime, orange, peach, mango, papaya, guava, and pineapple. It finishes dry, bitter, piney, and a little earthy. The body is medium to medium-light and it's nicely crisp. In the end I'm not finding this to be anything special. It's pleasant, and to a certain extent quaffable, but it's not rich in flavor or anything really unusual. I'm not even sure what I'd tag it as. Is it a New England style IPA? I'm not even sure. It's good, and I'll certainly have a few more if I come across it, but there's no new ground broken here.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy (~35%), medium orange color with a sticky, white foam head. SRM of 8-9. (4.00)

Aroma: Moderate aromas of lemon/orange citrus, grapefruit, peach, pineapple. Lots of orange and green citrus with some pine underneath. Airy and zesty. (4.00)

Flavor: The flavor follows the nose with strong lemon/orange & green citrus, grapefruit, pineapple flavor. Lots of citrus and pineapple. No bitterness. Smooth, and drinks juicy on the end of citrus and pineapple. (4.00)

Feel: Rather strong carbonation. Medium-bodied. The carbonation allows it to clean off the palate. (4.25)

Compared to 3 Floyds Foggy Geezer IPA 2/28/21: Pours a slightly darker color with a stickier head. More zesty citrus aromas. Less wet orange, tropical peach, and sweet strawberry fruit.

Compared to Breckenridge Brewery's Hop Peak IPA 3/12/21 (incorrect in blind tasting): Pours a lighter color that has slightly more haze and sediment. More airy citrus aromas. Less sweet and tropical flavors. Drinks sweeter and more juicy. Less tea, pine, and green/tropical fruit.

Compared to Hazy Little Thing 3/19/21: Pours a slightly hazier appearance with an identical color. Very similar aromas/flavors. Slightly more green citrus & tropical/plastic and less orange citrus and pineapple. Slightly sweeter with less carbonation. Overall, very similar.

Compared to New Belgium Voodoo Ranger Juicy Haze IPA 5/6/21: Pours a darker, clearer orange color. Similar aromas of citrus, pine, and light herbs. Slightly more orange. Slightly less lemon citrus. Slightly more resinous, sweet, malty flavors.

Compared to New Belgium V2K IPA 6/12/21: Pours a darker and clearer color. Milder aromas/flavors. More bitter and green pineapple/citrus. Less tropical guava and papaya. More resinous and sweeter.

Overall: Not the IPA I was expecting based on the reviews. Many of the reviews I had read about this beer had been disappointing or sort of negative. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. It had nice zesty citrus flavors. Mostly LEMON/ORANGE citrus, GRAPEFRUIT, GREEN PINEAPPLE. Some pine on the aroma, with a mild bitterness. As a macro hazy IPA and for a brewery that puts out a new beer nearly every payday, this one was rather impressive. (Final Rating: 4.08)
