In a never-ending quest to create new beers and defy category, New Belgium Brewing and Brouweri Boon of Belgium have partnered together again to create Transatlantique Kriek - a spontaneously fermented lambic ale made with Polish cherries.
This authentic kriek beer began life in the oaken vessels at Frank Boon's brewery in the Lembeek region of Belgium. After more than two years aging, Boon's offering shipped across the Atlantic and found its way to the intuitive palate of New Belgium's Brewmaster Peter Bouckaert. After much sampling and internal consultation, Peter and his brew staff created a full-bodied golden lager to round out the light-bodied kriek.
The cherry nose gives way to a pleasingly sour flash across the palate that rolls gently into a slightly sweet finish. Crisp, effervescent carbonation keeps the mouthfeel bright and delightfully tingly.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a New Belgium Globe glass. 2014 Bottle.
Appearance: Pours a nice deep ruby red with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of pink head which slowly recedes into a thin patchy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.
Smell: A fruity, sweet. and fairly tart aroma with big hints of cherries, oak, and acid. Huge aroma of tart and sweet cherries throughout with some hints of berries, green apple, and strawberry rhubarb. Fruit aroma is fairly jammy and tart with mild sourness. Hints of vinegar, funk, and acid. Oak barrel comes through. Pale malt background with hints of wheat, lager yeast, caramel, grains, cracker, and biscuit. A very good aroma.
Taste: Like the smell, a fruity, sweet, and tart fruit forward taste with big notes of cherries, yeast, and other fruits. Upfront big jammy taste of sweet and tart cherries along with other juicy fruit notes including green apple, berries, grape, and strawberry rhubarb. Funky and acidic notes along with some vinegar and sugar. Barrel notes of oak. Bready pale malt with some notes of caramel, wheat, cracker, lager yeast, biscuit, and grains. A very good fruity taste.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Creamy, juicy, and fairly tart. Sweet but finishes somewhat dry. Alcohol heat is hidden well.
Overall: A very good take on a Lambic. Good fruity notes with a balanced tartness and sweetness.

From old, undated notes; poured from the bottle.
Beautiful deep red; slightly see-through.
Lovely.
Red-ish off-white head; a curtain of lace.
Sour cherry smell.
Medium thin mouthfeel.
Cherry-forward taste, not overly sour.
Real quaffable, but with a distinct flavor. Winning.
