Notes / Commercial Description:
In a never-ending quest to create new beers and defy category, New Belgium Brewing and Brewerij Boon of Belgium have partnered together again to create Transatlantique Kriek - a spontaneously fermented lambic ale made with Polish cherries.

This authentic kriek beer began life in the oaken vessels at Frank Boon's brewery in the Lembeek region of Belgium. After more than two years aging, Boon's offering shipped across the Atlantic and found its way to the intuitive palate of New Belgium's Brewmaster Peter Bouckaert. After much sampling and internal consultation, Peter and his brew staff created a full-bodied golden lager to round out the light-bodied kriek.

The cherry nose gives way to a pleasingly sour flash across the palate that rolls gently into a slightly sweet finish. Crisp, effervescent carbonation keeps the mouthfeel bright and delightfully tingly.

Pours a deep blood red with a fluffy off pink head. Very interesting looking beer and definitely not what I was expecting. Smell is very fruity, tons of cherries, lemon and lime, tart and sweet. Taste is very similar to the smell. Cherries, raspberries, funk, grape, green apple. Feel light and tart, crisp and refreshing.

Overall, enjoyable, good summer beer. A little fruity for my taste, but lots of good flavors.

22 oz. bottle purchased at Connecticut Ave. Wine and Liquors in NW D.C., unknown bottling date but 2014 vintage, poured into my The Bruery "Rue the Day" tulip glass, drank over an hour

A: 3/3 - ruby red coloration; low clarity (cannot see through); initial pink frothy head gives way to subtle glass lacing that reagitates on swirling; moderate alcohol legs

S: 8/12 - big cherry nose; moderate medicinal character; some alcohol; no hops or yeast aroma to speak

T: 12/20 - again, cherry flavor and sweetness right up front, but unfortunately, there isn't much of the advertised tartness; continued cherry flavors and sweetness with some residual lingering but finishes generally dry and inviting; moderate alcohol and yeast (estery) notes; no hop bitterness/flavor

M: 4/5 - moderate carbonation for style; slight chewiness; alcohol coating proves fullness

O: 7/10 - decent American kriek that unfortunately lacks complexity, especially when tart flavors are advertised; also not worth the ~$15 price point in the Washington DC area; I probably won't be returning

TOTAL - 34/50
