Lips of Faith Vrienden (from 22 oz bottle) is an interesting beer that I think suffers from having such odd ingredients in it. Other LoF sours I enjoyed, especially Le Terroir, but this one seemed to fall a little flat. The hibiscus flowers provide a nice bit of aroma in the nose and but really contribute very little to actual taste and the endive give a weird vegetably bitterness like broccoli water. I was not terribly impressed and would not seek this out again in the future.

Not a style I really ever go to but I wanted to change things up a little yesterday.Poured into a tulip glass a hazed peach orange color with a great fluffy white head that clung like glue to my glass as it settled very slowly.Tart fruit really stood out in the nose,the funk is subdued but is noticable,a bit of toasted grain as well.Flavors are tart and semi sweet,a decent shot of herbal,lemony hops show themselves as well,the funk lays underneath but again is noticable.Not a bad beer,it is a bit tame for the style wich is fine by me,a change of pace that wont happen very often for me.

22oz bottle. Pours a clear golden orange with a medium frothy white head that goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is some sweet doughy malt and floral spices with a bit of brett.

The flavor is sweet fruity malts followed by some brett some spices and a little tart tangy fruits and a medium bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth slightly sharp carbonation.

Overall, it's pretty similar to NB Imperial Berliner Weisse. Not too complex and lightly sour. I think it has a bit more Brett and some different spices (hibiscus?) that I wasn't sure I cared for as much.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is grain, grass and hibiscus flowers. The flowers are the dominant aroma. There is very little tartness or sourness in the aroma which is disappointing. The flavor is also disappointing. I get a lot of wheat and toffee malt, as well as quite a bit of hibiscus and other floral notes. There is a grain component to the flavor as well as some very light tartness. I don't get any of the lacto sourness that I was expecting, especially since the label specifically mentions lactobacillus. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Not a bad beer by any means, but I was expecting a sour beer and that is not really what this is. This beer tastes about like a flowery version of the Imperial Berliner Weiss that New Belgium released earlier this year. I think New Belgium and Allagash could do better than this.

Clear, bright orange with golden yellow edges. Thin white cap and thin lines of lacing left down the glass.

Sweet aroma of white grapes, apples, and perhaps a touch of banana and orange. There's also a bit of a floral and earth present as well.

Floral and fruit flavors follow the nose nearly identically. The floral and earth components play a slightly larger role than they do in the aroma, with a fruity sweetness throughout: white grapes and sweet apples.

Thin to medium mouthfeel. Crisp.

A drinkable, though somewhat boring and unexciting, wild ale.

Looks like a normal copper colored beer, decent head to it. Mild flower and tart smell to it, neat, nothing blew me away or was offputting. Minor fruit smellies.

Taste stayed the same way, flowers, fruit rind, easy to drink, covered alcohol well. Minorly sour. More than anything I've ever had with an Allagash name on it, that's for sure.

Its no le terroir in terms of sourness and appreciability, but it is a nice delicate introduction to wildales. Still good.

Pours a clear light amber color with a one-finger white head. The head dissipates into a wispy layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of medium malts, slightly tart berries/cherries, and soft spicy hops, in that order.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Slightly sweet indistinct malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by lightly tart cherries and berries, more cherry influence than in the aroma. Very light amounts of earthy hops come into play midway through the sip before quickly fading into a crisp finish.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I didn't have any problems finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this was a pretty neutral beer as far as the style goes. A nice intro to sour beers but nothing worth seeking out.

A- This beer has a slightly hazy body of deep orange with a slight red hue to it. There is a strong carbonation of tiny bubbles supporting a white creamy and bubbly head that turns rocky but last a good bit.

S- The soft fruity tartness has a brightness to it and a soft brett cheese rind hint to follow. The finish has a hint of lettuce in the background.

T- The crisp light fruit with a note of tartness has a soft hibiscus tang in the finish and a very light watery lettuce/endive note in the finish.

M- This beer has a light mouthfeel with a crisp texture but not much alcohol noticed.

O- This beer has a hibiscus flavor that is sharp but soft and the brett has some nice support but there is no real main character in this beer making it taste a little flat as it opens up.

Poured from bottle into GI Matilda glass. Light amber orange in color with a small white head that settles to a collar. Smell is interesting - funky and sour notes, chloroseptic, slight lacto, white grapes, some mint and wilted greens. Taste is equally strange but not unpleasant. Starts out kind of sour with a malty sweetness, pretty balanced, then fades into this weird fish skin sulfuric rotten egg type taste. Leaps and bounds better as it warms up. The start is pretty good, but the finish is unpleasant. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and light carbonation. Overall I think this beer was trying a little too hard. If it was bottle conditioned it would have some great aging potential to get rid of some of those off flavors and increase the sourness, but instead this one is a pass. Strangely, all of Allagash's sours are excellent, as are any of the beers that come out of New Belgium with a cork and cage. NB, are you listening?

A: An amber hue with a small but permanent ring of foam around the glass.

S: Melon fruit with bubblegum esters. Quite aromatic and flowery.

T: More sweet summer fruits that end abruptly by lacto and fainter brett notes. Funk is quite light but enjoyable. Slight vegetal finish with lingering gum sweetness.

M: Very well held together but the sweetness and lower carbonation give it a much thicker presence. I imagine this would be a more superb drink were it on the lighter side.

D: There is a lot of seemingly disparate elements interacting here, some synergistically and others antagonistically. Still, my first hibiscus and endive combination.

New Belgium Vrienden:

-Poured a golden amber color with a finger width of head, whick quickly dissapated. Quite clear with just a touch of haze in the glass. The bottom of the bottle was quite clean (more on that later). Overall in appearance it was quite nice.

-Smell: Smell was somewhat sweet with a bit of the brett/lacto on the edge, a little funky and a little acidity on the nose to start. As it warms the nose loses some of its sweetness and the funky notes come out a little bit further.

-Taste: Light and crisp on the tongue with a reserved sour bite halfway through the sip. Quite a bit of residual sweeteness at cool temperatures converting to just a bit of alcohol heat as it warms. My thoughts, after the first sip, were: "where are the herbs?" I could note some subtle hints, and really that's the way it should be in most cases, but with there being large labeling of the special ingredients (and for an American audience) I would have expected them to be a bit more present. The base beer feels like a strong golden style, which was quite well executed. The brett and lacto have definately had their go at the beer, but could really go longer to build up some further flavor and carbonation. The mouthfeel was solid, with no dropoff in flavors or watery feel.

-Summary: If I had to pidgeonhole this one, it would be 'beginners sour'. It is quite strong at 9% and certainly includes a great deal of interesting elements that almost *over* blend to form a unified flavor. The result is something which is very enjoyable, but is overbuilt from the description on the bottle. I congratulate New Belgium on crafting a well balanced flavor...but this is not only a sour, it is a collaboration with Allagash -- and that changes some expectations. I do not much feel that the Allagash style is represented in the presence of the New Belgium hands. Part of this, I think, is that these were not aged for terribly long and I do not believe were bottle conditioned. Both of these would have seriously helped out the flavor. I noted above that the beer was very clear all the way to the bottom. In a sour I want that last bit to be murky and means that the bugs have had time to do their part in the flavor, if it is pretty and clear then I worry that I am still drinking it too young. I would be very interested in letting this one age for a time and see how it develops.

I certainly didn't expect an Oude Brune, Flanders, or Lambic from this one. I expected more of an Eric's Ale + Allagash big flavors with a good deal of herbs and reserved sour. It missed this mark a bit. HOWEVER! I still liked this one a lot; as a starter sour it hits the mark and I would certainly buy more just to see how it ages and as a pre-cursor to further sours over the course of a session night.

-Pairing: Given the reserved sour but high alcohol %, food pairing can get interesting. Cutting the acid with a fat would be a good idea, as well would be pairing it with a more distinctly flavored meat. Ripened cheeses, lamb (no mint..), venison. On the other hand, stay away from starches and this one, I believe that they would cover the flavor and act against one another to the detriment of both. Given the opportunity, I would enjoy this one with a Nicoise salad.

Body is a pretty blonde color with some amber highlights and a fairly lively carbonation. Sweet malt and sour yeast provide an interesting interplay on the nose, with good notes of tropical fruit in the background. Palate is also a sweet-and-sour dichotomy of sweet pale malt, candi sugar, and tropical fruit balanced by the sourness of the brett and endive. A distinct vegetal note (from the endive, I guess) adds some depth and is interesting, but not too distracting. Finish is a nice sour fruit flavor.

purchased primarily because blackie gave it a 4.1

appearance: served in my ale asylum chalice, hazy orange body, light beige ring

smell: nothing overly distinguishable...strawberry, a touch funky, heavy lean to the sweet side of the style

taste: Meh - not sure how this collaboration didnt turn out great, but it definitely did not. The hibiscus provides a floral flavor with sweet berries and an earthy core. I'm not sure what the point of the endive was, but it's not really adding anything here. Boring, and quite dissapointing.

mouthfeel: heavy sweetness, not much in the way of wild ale traits

drinkability: alright

Pours a thin copper color. You can see the carbonation in the drink. Rich-looking with some floaties in it. The head is immense and slightly annoying because it seemingly doesn't dissipate, instead just growing and growing.

The smell is killer. Sweet, tangy Brett yeast with a side of cinnamon. Very close to a 5 in the nose.

Gonna be a while before I can taste it because the head has simply not dropped. The yeast is evident, along with the hops. Pepper spice and the aforementioned cinnamon in the finish.

Kind of a mish mash of feelings. Very dry and carbonated. Tangy, sweet, very tart. Spicy. Medium bodied. Hoppy bitterness in the swallow with a long, dry finish.

It's a good beer, with lots of good flavors and feelings. The alcohol is very well hidden. It's a little more tart than sweet making it slightly less drinkable than I care for, but a good collabation.

About passed on this & then saw it was a collaboration with Allagash, so I took a chance...

Pours copper with one finger + of pearl head. Good lacing & average head retention

S: Apple peels, sourness & honey suckle, a touch of barnyard late in the game

T: Pears, apple peels, wheat tartness, slight green apple tartness/crispness up front. Cherry tartness comes through as this warms, along with hints of lemon & white grape & just a hint of boozeyness, leather & apple juice type sweetness & the earthy sourness picks up a bit. Finishes tart with green apples, white grape juice & a touch of burnt candi-sugar

MF: Light bodied, effervescent

Drinks easy, not a very challenging wild here, but worth a try. I tend to like all of these Lips of Faith series more on draft

A: cloudy and coppery with brief bubbly head

S: fresh indoor house paint, a little sourness on the top and a deep malty background

T: it's like a watered down sour, like it was mixed with a Pacifico or a Negra Modelo, lacking the flavor and depth of a true Belgian. I challenge anyone to take a Pacifico and squeeze a lime wedge into it and explain to me what the difference is, beyond the packaging and marketing

M: light and lager-y

O: why can't these breweries stick to what they're good at? To call this a Belgian anything is an insult to the tradition. Neither a sour nor a Belgian witte--nor even an American Wild--this beer is without a home.

Served from tap into a Trappe Door tulip. Poured red-orange with a two finger slightly off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, fruit, funk, and subtle tart. The flavor was of sweet malt, funk, fruit, sour, and slight earth. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbnoation. Overall this was a decent brew. Having had the Allagash version directly before this for comparison, I can honestly say that this one fell short of the Allagash version. There was just something a little off-putting on this one. Maybe it was the earthy note that I picked up on. But whatever it was, it definitely hurt this brew for me. Still worth trying though.

Copper colored with one finger of dense head that had excellant retention. The head slowly settled to a thick cap. Heavy lacing is left on the tulip glass.

For a "wild" beer and one brewed with breenomyces and lactobacillus, it is one tamed smelling beer. Just an ever so faint funkiness. Smells sweet with some perfume like flowers. The habiscus really comes out.

Just a little bit of brett funk and tartness up front, then it enters a slightly sweet Belgian pale ale mode. The hibiscus flower is detectable and adds an interesting element. Slightly disappointing overall when a more sour beer was expected. The two colaborating breweries put out far superiour sour beers.

Just short of medium body with a carbonation that is gentle and lends a very nice texture.

Good tasting beer that falls short of being a wild beer. Expected much more from this beer.
