THis is one great beer. A beefed up American take on a Dunkle. It works!!! Very impressive.
Poured into a Budweiser select pilsner glass. Looks murky and brown but when held to a light, it is all amber and ruby highlights. Nice size antique white head / good retention and some lacing.
Aroma is outstanding. Heavy duty hefe aromas, cloves and banana and yeast. Also some pepper and bready malts.
Taste is great as well. A dark hefe on steroids. The hefe elements are prominent. Good use of the banana/yeast/cloves combo that makes a hefe so inviting. In addition there is a hearty blend of bready malts and some pepper and alcohol presence reminiscent of a good Belgian beer.
Mouthfeel is a good bit less light than a traditional Dunkel. This is a 9% abv beer. Stronger feel and some alcohol presence above and beyond a normal Dunkel. Does it work? Hell yes!!! This is a great beer.
Overall very impressive. I would drink this one again.

"Cat-burglar-smooth and just as fond of the dark, Dunkel Weiss sneaks together wheat and barley malts with a pinch of black pepper. Nab one before it gives you the slip! Tempt your Lips of Faith with the whole line - up at New Belgium.com." Brewed in the style of a German Dunkelweizen. Available as a one-off release in the Lips of Faith Series.
Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a New Belgium globe glass. Served above 53 degrees Fahrenheit.
(Appearance) Pours a frothy creamed head of an ecru-tan color over a deep brown body with dark cola highlights. Carbonation is plentiful and vivacious. Retention is very good, lacing is light and spotty. 4.25
(Smell) Sour wheat, caramel bread, a pinch of roasted grain, moderate black pepper and clove spiciness. Subtle notes of cocoa and dark fruit, moderate banana. Potency is medium/high. 4
(Taste) Sweetened wheat base, cocoa powder, dark fruit syrup, toasted caramel bread, moderate clove and banana bread character. Less spice and yeast character in the flavor, more balanced but ever present. Dunkel Weiss finishes on a pleasant blend of chewy wheat and roasted barley. 4
(Mouthfeel) The texture is silky, moderately chewy and mildly dry. Carbonation is moderate generating a high frothiness and medium crispness. Body is medium+ for the style, medium/heavy overall. Balance is evenly sweet to spicy and yeasty. Alcohol presence is light, and there are no off characters to mention. 3.75
(Overall) Altogether Dunkel Weiss is a very solid example of the uncommon style, with lots of smooth wheat, roasted malt and hefeweizen yeast flavor, yet roundly balanced and highly drinkable, which is a pleasant surprise considering the sneakily high 9% ABV. I hope that New Belgium decides to upgrade this seldom brewed style (in America, at least) to a more permanent status, as this would make for a unique summer or fall beer. 4
