Appearance: Poured into a half liter weizen glass. The color is a deep caramel brown. Two fingers of slightly tanned head developed and dissipated to leave traces along the glass, a spotted lacing, and a thick ring around the edge.

Smell: The heavenly aroma of dunkelweizen, though tinged with black pepper spice. Immediately noticeable are scents of apple, banana, and bubblegum. There is also caramel, clove, and black pepper spice that makes the nostrils tingle a little.

Taste: The black pepper is more noticeable in the flavor, where it introduces each sip with a nice spice kick. It overpowers everything else, frankly, until the beer warms. It's almost as if I have a waiter cranking away at a grinder over my glass. However, when it does fade flavors of apple, banana, and caramel emerge, thankfully balancing the black pepper so it is tolerable. The rather substantial ABV for a dunkelweizen is very well masked.

Drinkability: Tasty stuff, but it lacks the usual potency of dunkelweizen. It is obviously not true to style on purpose, but the uniqueness of the pepper spice gets old quickly.

Pours a red-tinged dark brown, plenty of colour to it, with very nice beige head; fairly pale with nice density, sinks slowly but surely to a thin crown of bubbles with some wonderful lacing left behind. Looks pretty damn great.

Smells a bit completely insane. Massive weizen esters, but leaning heavily on the candy banana side, with huge banana sweetness. Also an equally odd side-note of smoke, with some bacon and charred wood, and maybe some peach in the mix as well. Totally didn't expect that, and I'm glad. Quite fascinating, I'm glad it blind-sided me but still, it's a bit too odd for me to love it.

Taste starts out banana cake-esque, there's plenty of that weizeny banana flavour but also a gooey sweet cake batter note with hints of butter and caramel. Not really a lot of dark notes which is a bit incongruous with the look and style, and it really just ends up fruity with more of that seed-heavy banana note. If I were a banana fan I might like it, but A) I'm not, and B) I'm also disappointed that there seems so little else to it, especially given the intrigue of the nose.

Not a bad feel, with a bit of body to it, slightly dry at the back and a bit heavy. Not bad.

Too much banana. What's great about good weizens is the balance between fruit and spice, and there's really a want of spice here. Decent brew, but a bit one-note.

Thanks to heyta for the bottle. Served in a tulip because I like it that way.

Pours a very, very dark brown that borders on black. This looks like a stout, not a dunkel. Way too dark. Aside from that, small off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin collar and some galaxy swirls on top. The nose has a very small amount of chocolate along with some banana and clove. The yeasty components take a big backseat to the malt, and this is especially true in the flavor. Far too big and malty without much of a yeasty component. Medium body with low carbonation for the style. Overall, not a big fan of this one. I guess you can't really tell it's 9%, but that's about all it has going for it.

22 ounce bottle - $5.99 at Olde Crabapple Bottle Shoppe in Alpharetta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours out a rather dark brown body with an unabashedly tall, foamy, faint ecru-colored head.

Smell: Spicy notes of peppery and clove reach well ahead of the slow-pokey scents of dark wheat, sugar-free chocolate and banana puddings, and alcohol marinating dark fruits.

Taste: A sprinkling of chocolate sprinkles and a drop or two of sweet caramel over a single slice of toasted wheat bread. Then a brief curtain call of golden raisin, banana, chewing gum, and cloves. Sip of diet cola. Then, a flash of sharp, cutting cloves and coarse liquor right before the semi-dry, lightly chocolaty finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. The carbonation flees the drink in a real hurry, leaving the beer a bit flat within minutes.

Overall: Sorry, NB, but I'm not too keen on this LoF release. In the taste you almost had me, then lost me real fast.

Poured from a bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark reddish brown with a finger of tan head that fades to a layer.

Smell: Very fruity with lots of banana and mild roast. Smells a bit like banana runts.

Taste: Sweet malt with lots of banana. Just a little roast and a bit spicy. Crisp given the abv.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with smooth carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: Not my favorite. I thought the banana flavor was way to strong and didn't allow for many other flavors to come through.

dark amber/copper body, clear glassy, looks good, head has nice lacing but not much retention... the aroma has tons of cloves, a bit of nutmeg spice, bready throughout, not bad... the taste is extremely clovey with tons of wheat, loses the spice, pretty alcoholic... average
