Straight pour from 22oz pry-off bottle to a Belgian Independence Day tulip; bottling date of April 14, 2011 (“4-14-2011 110414041”) printed near the bottom of the bottle.

Appearance (4.0): Oooh, what a pretty pour! The body is the color of clover honey with a perfectly integrated haze—a hazy body cannot look better than that. Head pops up to a bit over two fingers, off-white, with fine bubbles and recedes relatively quickly to half a finger. Not a lot of lacing going on, but the body and head make up for that.

Smell (4.0): Nice yeasty spiciness, matched evenly with the sweetness of fruit juice—almost like apple juice, so I’m assuming that’s the ghost of Asian pears invading my nostrils. I like it, though. That fruity character is laced with a slightly tart funk, which nice and musty, too. Doesn’t necessarily fit the BSPA profile but personally I’m getting a kick out of it.

Taste (4.0): There is . . . a lot happening. Yeast spice (nicely integrated), some very horsey funk (much appreciated), moderate fruitiness that resembles a tangy-er* pear flavor, tart bretty characteristics that mesh with the fruit and spice surprisingly well (I don’t know how it managed to link them, but it did), and a bit of booze coursing through it all. It finishes dry and slightly grassy / herbal, but if there’s any real hop presence it’s pretty faint—this is more a product of yeast and booze. Personally, I enjoy this Belgian-inspired circus of flavors, but I understand how some people might not.

Mouthfeel (3.0): Better than average, but not by a whole hell of a lot. Carbonation is nice but subtle: smooth with very fine tingling, but not as much of a presence as I’d like—especially for the style. Body is on the thick side of medium and has a slightly syrupy quality to it, but fortunately the alcohol dries it out considerably in the finish.

Overall (4.0): If you’re going to drink this, you’d be a fool to expect a standard BSPA. Right on the bottle it says it’s a double recipe of Fat Tire, with Asian Pear juice mixed in and fermented with saison yeast (of the funky variety). Don’t expect something “to style.” If you’re looking for something interesting and different, and enjoy a bit of funk, you’re going to appreciate this beer a bit more. I applaud New Belgium’s efforts to create something unique, and I have definitely enjoyed this beer!

*First I wrote “tangier” but I thought that’d be confusing at first glance to anyone with a sense of geography.

Bomber poured into my large Gulden Draak tulip, New Belgium's Grand Cru is bright copper with an off-white head leaving scattered lace.

Smell is on the fruity ester sides, a little overripe banana reminiscent to me of an over aged blonde, and some sourish citrus.

Taste is heavy on the old blonde side that I don't care for (I don't know when this came out or remember when I bought it, but it was a the front of my cellar). The pear is somewhat notable, mostly the acidic citrus, but it's mostly the esters and broken down malt. A hint of snappy, herbal hops helps.

Mouthfeel is dry, acidic, medium bodied.

Drinkability isn't too high to me. It taste like an over-aged trippel. Maybe just the pear juice. Regardless, not digging it.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a tulip glass. This pours a reddish amber color with a white head which is short lived. The smells are of Belgian yeast esters, with pear, banana, some sweet malts. The feel is medium higher carbonation. The taste leaves a little bit to be desired, a little sour taste, pear, sweet malts, definite alcohol taste/burn.

Duvel Tulip

A ~ Pours amber with no real head to speak of. Mostly just suds with delicate bubbles rising ever so slowly.

S ~ Pears & applesauce upfront.
Strong yeast notes...floral notes of rosebush

T ~ Old Pears & the juice squeezed from said pears. Alcohol. Overly gummy yeast. A mess of cough syrup & white grape juice. A very odd leafy quality lingers amongst the boozy fruit notes. Hint of lemon juice.

M ~ Hot, Hot, Hot! Very loose & without cohesion on the palette. Medicinal notes midpalette are way too overt & detract from the flavor of the beer. I don't usualy cringe when I drink BSPAs, but I did here.

D ~ Too hot! This beer is not together at all. Hoped for MUCH more than was deliver. This is Strike 2 for the "Cru" beers of the Lips of Faith series.

22oz bottle.

Pours clear copper with a quarter inch head of white. Zero lacing with a placid surface for the duration.

Aromatics lead off with bubblegum, pears, apples, and hard candies. Honey-like, fruity, and clovey.

Medium bodied with lightly carbonated mouthfeel. A bit syrupy.

Fruit juice and light malt start the palate. Red apples, pear juice, and clove-dusted bubblegum follow through.

Finishes with fruit cocktail, honey, and candied apples.

Too sweet for me and very much like fermented fruit juice.

22 ounce bottle, the bottle is stamped with 4-14-2011. I guess that's the bottled on date, but I'm not exactly sure of that. Served in a tulip, the beer pours a mostly clear orange/amber color with about an inch light tan head that sticks around for a bit. There's also a decent amount of lacing. The brew smells like pears, bready malt, candy sugar and a bit of sweet spices. The taste is pretty much just like the aroma, but the flavors don't seem quite as strong for some reason. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit syrupy and is well carbonated. It's a solid beer, but not something I would buy all the time. But I think it's worth trying.

[Best served in a Trappist glass]

The pour was a medium orange with a slight brown hue and a small (less than 1 finger) white fizzy head that was dissipated rapidly to just a few puddles of residue and had some streaky lacing.

The aroma was of straw malts, grassy hops and a moldy doughy yeast with notes of caramel, a bit of fruitiness and a nice dose of alcohol.

The taste was a little bland yet still sweet and a tad acidic with a decent caramel note in the beginning and finished a bit malty and fruity with a mild alcohol tinge at the end. The flavor lasted a decent amount of time after the swallow, leaving behind a slight fruitiness and a strong alcohol flavor.

Mouthfeel was somewhere between light and medium in body with the texture being oily and a bit watery with a mild carbonation.

Overall a very mild tasting Belgian Ale, which was a little astringent, a bit fruity and had a strong alcohol presence.

A: This poured clear gold with some white head.
S: It smelled like crisp apricot and grassy hops, with sour Belgian yeast and a bit of vinegar.
T: It tasted like crisp apricot and wild honey and grassy hops, with some sour Belgian yeast and sweet candi sugar and a bit of vinegar. It had a clean and crisp aftertaste that was a little sour.
M: It was watery with some smooth natural carbonation. Light but refined body.
D: This was a nice BSPA with good scent and taste and body. The alcohol was pretty well hidden, so it was easy to drink. Nothing special but easily enjoyable. Recommended fresh.
