Style: American Wild Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Notes / Commercial Description:
This pleasing, two-part, potion was brewed with chocolate and black malts for a rich and roasty overtone, then fused with a dry, substratum of sour for a bold and audacious flavor. Black as night, this beer is blended at 80% stout, 20% dark sour wood beer for a collaboration that begins with a sour edge and finishes with a big, dark malt character, lingering, sweet on your palate.

12/30/17...pours pitch black in color, light tan foam layer. Chocolate and coffee nose. Woodsy. Slightly sour taste, heavy wood and spills into a creamy stout. Then tart again. Really damn good.

Appearance: Pours espresso colored with a huge beige head that billows; good retention and lacing action

Smell: Vinous tones dominate, with red wine grape, blackberry and plum; underneath, there are chocolate, caramel and coffee elements; oaky and sour, as well

Taste: Lactic and woody, with vinous red wine grape, blackberry and plum building; through the middle. the chocolate and coffee emerge and, after the swallow, the caramel joins the profile; ultimately, what is past is prologue, with the sour fruit tones lingering into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: One thing I have noticed, over the years, is that I like Belgian style stouts more than the average BA and, when there is a sour element involved, I like them even more; this beer confirms that impression

Black as night with a fingernail of brown around the rim and covering half of the top. The aroma is primarily dark malt with notes of chocolate and oak. There's also an undercurrent of sourness. I'm tasting chocolate, oak, and Brettanomyces that tastes more like a chocolate covered cherry due to the other flavors. The mouth is moderately carbonated, but the oak gives it a nice smoothness. I think this beer looks like it will be heavy, but the flavors and aromas are actually pretty subtle and it drinks more like it is 5%. Appearances are deceiving here. I think this one is a bit underrated.

Pours black with two fingers of khaki colored head. Head retention is fair, with a few swirls of lacing left behind. Aroma is lactose, toasted, nutted, and biscuit malts. Nice carrying any sour notes in the aroma. Flavor profile is toasted, nutted, and biscuit malts. Light note of lactose, with oak, and a twinge of lactic sour bite. Mouth feel is smooth and creamy, with a medium thickness. Overall, very tasty showing more of its imperial dark side than sourness. Sour notes linger on the tongue after a sip.

Served in a 12oz snifter from a 22oz bottle.

22 ounce bottle poured into a tulip

A: Pours black with a tan colored head, no lacing or head retention, good amount of carbonation.

A: Lots of dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee, cinnamon, no sour aromas at all, smells like a coffee infused stout.

T: Very mellow sour notes, follows the nose with dark roasted coffee and chocolate, hint of sour dark grapes as well as some oak from the barrels, hint of sourness up front but most of the sour notes are in the finish.

M: Light/medium bodied with a very dry dark coffee like finish, finish is dry.

O: This is good but not as sour as I expected, it has more dark roasted coffee and dark chocolate than it does sour notes, the sourness is like dark grapes, overall, I enjoyed this but I wish it had more sour notes to it.

Taste: Rich, dark fruit, sour, prunes, woody, coffee, chocolate notes. same with the nose. Black with reddish hue, mostly opaque, tan head with ring lace. Medium//full body. Unique, but I feel the sour is more forward than the Stout flavors more like 50/50 than 30/70. 19 IBUs

Poured into a snifter, the appearance was a pitch black color. Thin foamy off white to almost tan sort of colored head. Quick dissipation. Sticky filmy lace. The aroma sniffed at a blend of sour citrus rind, bitter ends of some pine, and then wraps into dark and milk chocolate that ends up drying out just a touch from the wood. Super light coffee bean. Took a while, but some raspberry/cherry/blackberry comes out. The flavor melds the sour of the citrus to the bitter dry wood and fluffs up a bit with some sweet from the milk chocolate. Dark chocolate kicks back a bit more in this department. Pine seems barely there. Sour to blended milk chocolate aftertaste rolling on into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fair sipping quality about it. Good sturdy carbonation. ABV felt just a tad under than what the brewer projected. Sourness doesn’t slay my tongue too much. Overall, nicely done imperialized dark sour stout Belgian sort of thing, oh hell, I have no idea what it’s really supposed to be. Just damn good.
