This pleasing, two-part, potion was brewed with chocolate and black malts for a rich and roasty overtone, then fused with a dry, substratum of sour for a bold and audacious flavor. Black as night, this beer is blended at 80% stout, 20% dark sour wood beer for a collaboration that begins with a sour edge and finishes with a big, dark malt character, lingering, sweet on your palate.

Pours a dense dark brown that looks about the same color as it did in the (brown) bottle. I am surprised and strangely excited by how dark the mocha brown head is. The aroma has some light grains and a bit of lactose-like sweetness. It's not bad, but it is just not much. The flavor is similarly unexciting, although it has a rather complex combination of mild apple tartness up front, some moderately roasted malts in the finish, and faint hints of chocolate and wood that creep in as the beer opens up. The texture is fairly light and smooth, which allows a light lingering woodiness to develop. Despite this beer's subtle complexity, however, it just doesn't provide much payoff, particularly for its high ABV.

In a single sentence: I thought I would love this one more.

Lots going on; the flavor is very complex. Initial chocolate, some dark cherry notes, finished by a whiskey like smokeyness that blends with the coffee backdrop. Moments of candi sweetness like toffee and butterscotch. It finishes in your mouth much like a stout; the sour factor is quite subdued, and shows up midway through tasting, and then is gone as quick as it came.

Kind of like a one man band... impressive one beer could pull all this flavor off at one time, but in the end, a jack of all trades-master-of-none scenario.

As a "wild" ale, I'd say this was an abject failure: there's just no sour or wild character to really be perceived. As an experimental stout, it worked at an average or slightly above average level, with modest roasted malt and chocolate flavors combined in a not unappealing way: it just wasn't anything special, either. With all the other stouts readily available, there's little reason to try this again, probably why New Belgium will not brew a repeat.

Pours a substantially tall head of dark tan to light brown bubbles, small in size, that has well above-average retention, lasting several minutes. The head does not recede without leaving substantial lacing along the sides of the glass: fairly large sheets of the stuff coat the glass' walls. Body is a dark brown to black, opaque, with light not affecting its coloration, and no visible carbonation.

Aroma is of roasted malt with sweetened chocolate and dried fruit esters akin to prunes. Not particularly robust, but certainly not unappetizing.

Flavor is solidly in the stout side, moderate roasted malt with mild chocolate flavor, just a slight "ping" of acidity on the sides of the palate. Front of palate detects some sweetened milk chocolate flavors . Mid-palate of sweetened milk chocolate with mild tangingess on the sides of the tongue and hints of ethanol. Very faint tartness on the back of palate, settled in as a minor character alongside continued roasted malt and chocolate flavors, with a new appearance of ethanol, too. Aftertaste of roasted malt sweetness with hints of chocolate and super-mild acridity.

Beer is medium to medium-heavy in body, with moderately intense carbonation that quickly peters out from a mildly fizzy feeling to a slightly foamy and smooth mouthfeel for the majority of the sipping period. Closes dryly, with little residual stickiness across the palate. For a 9% abv beer, the ethanol is surprisingly well-hidden, only slightly felt in the nostrils and throat.

A: Pitch black with a tall frothy brown head. Looks inviting.
S: Deep roasted malts, milk chocolate, tart cherries, and a bit minerally.
T: Starts with roasted malt and mild cherry pie tartness. Tartness transitions into a dry smokiness. Finshes a bit chalky and ashy.
M: Medium-bodied with full carbonation. Could be a little "quieter".

I went back and forth on this one, both appreciating the interesting combination of flavors and then disliking the clash between the strong ashy flavors and tartness. Worth a try, but one and done for me.

The late-building head is a creamy chestnut that lasts a long while, leaving a coating of lace on a flute glass. The ale itself is a very dark brown, nearly black, with no highlights.

Sour cherry dominates the aroma with chocolate and sweet blackberry closely behind.

The tartness is surprisingly light here as the flavors closely follow the nose. Sourness builds in the middle and lasts through a long, mild finish. Overall, this is quite fruity.

A light to medium body with light alcohol and light carbonation. The texture is soft and smooth.
This is an easy, relaxing beer that could be used as an introduction to the style for those otherwise unfamiliar with sour beers.

Poured into a pint glass
A: Moderate pour yields 3/4 finger tan head with fair retention. Near opaque dark brown/black.
S: Subdued, slight cherry, milk stout, coffee, slight Belgian twang. Too subdued, more aroma would be nice.
T: Coffee, roasty malt, sour twinge, cherry. One of the best tasting sour/cherry stouts I've had. Similar to Short's Black cherry Porter. Full flavored and complimentary dark chocolate and tart lemon juice. I like this!
M: Dry, chewy, tart.
O: Glad to drink a bomber solo. Very tasty. I would buy this again. It doesn't blow me away, but if I didn't have Black Cherry Porter around, my cravings would be satisfied by this.

Pours black, dark brown head cascades well on the glass and hangs around for a while before dissipating. Taste starts as a pungent sour, then quickly moves to a stout, dark roasty malts dominate the flavor, but the sour comes back at the end as an accent to the flavor. Sour tickles the sides of the mouth. Wish the sour was a bit more pronounced and the stout a bit less. Like a stout plus more, a great flavor combination. Tasted again after 6 months of again, and the sour was more pronounced. Wish I had another one or two to age longer!

Poured from tap into flute style glass at alewife, baltimore. Pours a pitch black color with a finger of dark tan head. Smells of very roasted dark malts. Taste is very roasted; malts, coffee, slight vanilla and somewhat fruity/cherry notes. Really nice. Easy to drink but complex. Not sure why this didn't get better reviews. Its a great brew with lots of personality. Worth a try for sure.

Shared this with a friend yesterday. Poured into my dogfish tulip. Received as an extra in a trade.

A - Pours a dark brownish hue with a one finger head that leaves a light thin tan halo.

S - Light , light roasted malts that fade to subtle cherries and vinegar.

T - Taste was light roast and chocolate along ith sour cherries. Its alright, nothing too crazy.

M - Nice carbonation for this, slightly thin though.

O - Overall this was an average beer in the Lips of Faith series. Somewhat of a let down.

22oz into a saison glass. Pours a dark cola brown w/ a 2-finger mocha head. Thin film of lace clings to the glass.

Aroma is an intriguing combination of dark bitter chocolate, sour black cherries, oak. As it warms, some red wine notes & coffee emerge. A quick swirl brings up an earthy, nutty aroma.

Taste follows nose. Dark cherries, red wine, chocolate, and an oaky dryness. Coffee is there but hidden behind the chocolate & cherries, which compete for prominence. But at room temp the balance evens out among all these elements.

Mouthfeel is slick and dry, smooth.

Overall, this is an interesting beer. Defies categorization. Like a blend of a chocolate stoute and a Belgian sour aged in red win barrels. I'll hold onto my other bottle and see what some age does with it.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into an Orval chalice.

A: Looks like a stout, black body with mocha colored head. Head fades quickly.

S: Roasty, slightly sour aroma. Pretty interesting, yet familiar.

T: Slight sour character hits you up front but is quickly washed away by it's stout characteristics.

M: Good, nicely carbonated, thinner (but not thin) than a normal stout would be. In this case, I like that it's not sticky.

D: A unique creation for sure. A lot like a stout, with some more acidity and probably less bittering; it seems to finish cleaner and with more complexity. The sour characteristics aren't themselves noticeable, but lend this uniqueness.

I would buy this again, and appreciate New Belgium making delicious things outside of the style guidelines.

Served on-draught into a wide mouth goblet at The Daily Pint in Santa Monica, California. Their white board labelled it "Clutch Dark Sour Ale". Reviewed from notes. Expectations were high; I loved La Folie.

A: Pours a one finger head of slight tan colour, good cream, nice thickness, and bad retention. Colour is a solid nontransparent dark brown. No yeast particles are visible.

Sm: Bacteria, wild yeast, hints of fruit esters, and cream. A mild to moderate strength aroma.

T: Slightly sour, with some cream and even hints of nut notes. Strangely balanced. No alcohol comes through. Sourness seems restricted to the finish. Built okay. Lackluster for the style; it's just not sour enough. I wish it were bolder.

Mf: Smooth, wet, and light. Slight cream. Mildly complementary of the flavour profile.

Dr: Drinkable but of limited quality. Hides its ABV well. Decently priced. I wouldn't have it again. A mundane so-called sour.

New Belgium clutch 

A- aggressive pour produces a two finger mocha head decent retention  that rests atop a very dark brown body. Leaves very nice lacing 4.5 

S- cidar vinegar, choclaye malt, caramel, cherries, 4 

T- chocolate, cidar vinegar, mollases, caramel, cherries, good level of tartness, woody, nutmeg or some sort of spice, slightly watered down tasting.i think it works well. It's almost like a tart cherry coveted in dark chocolate. Nothing real bold which is a good thing sometimes. 4

M- good mouthfeel. Taking points off for the slightly watered down taste here.  3.5

O- I wasn't sure if I was going to like a sour stout but I do and think it was well done. Nice drinkability enjoying the 22 every ounce 4

Served in straight pint glass. Poured black, with just a bit of translucence at the edges, with about an inch of tan head that had OK retention and pretty good lacing.

The aroma was very roast forward, with some earthy grains in the background, and some funkiness also very noticeable. There was an aroma I couldn't quite put my finger on, kind of a smoke scent, but not really smoke. The flavor profile was very similar, that odd smoke taste way deep in the back, the strong malt and grains dominating and the the slice of funk lingering in the back.

The body was on the thin side, especially considering this supposedly a Stout, but was overall OK and enjoyable. Drinkabilty was OK, a lot would depend on your attitude towards the funk, my pint went down easily enough and I'd consider having another. Overall, a pretty good beer, one that's worth trying when you see it.

Pours a pitch black color with a finger of dark brown head.

Smells primarily of dark roasted malts including cocoa powder, dark chocolate and some light coffee notes with a hint of acidic cherry.

Acidic, sour cherry notes and ethanol upfront with chocolate and roasted notes on the finish.

The body is definitely interesting on this one starts out thin and moves towards a creamy richness on the back end with a bit of alcohol warmth, low to medium body, and light, prickly carbonation.

I think this would be more serviceable at a lower ABV and with a bit higher percentage of the sour beer blended in; the sour aspect is almost lost in the stout/porter character of this beer.

My brother bought me a bottle when I came out to GABF last year. Had a bottle then and didn't really think this one was very sour. Decided to take home my parting gift, another bottle, and see what a few months would do.

Pours a dark brown with amber highlights. Some suds cling to the sides of the chalice glass poured into. Smells like a stout with some faint roast and just a pinch of sourness.

Tastes a little more sour than in the nose. Still a little weak on the sour side, but just enough to know its there. This would be an excellent sour for a newbie (which I'm still sort of is). Feels somewhat light and easy drinking. Not much puckering but an okay bitterness.

Overall, I'm somewhat disappointed. Was expecting something much more like something that would hit you in the head with and say "I'm Clutch, dammit - feel the Pure Rock Fury that I am". But no, it just doesn't do that for me. Even still, I'm glad to see a beer bear a name of Clutch and will happily add the empty to my collector's stash.

A: Black and bubbly with a thin but consistent film of a head--cocoa brown; great lacing

S: Slightly tart and boozy and grainy and malty and fruity: musty and grassy, slightly tart darker fruits like plums, cherries, and raisins; but there is also a chocolatey roasted malt undertone

T: Slightly tart up front with hints of cherries, apples, and raisins, but also a musty grainy quality all on top of a roasted chocolate and coffee malt presence; not as sour as I'd like but it does play off the roasty malts quite well

F: Medium body and fairly creamy; maybe a touch thin on the back end

O: This is a refreshing and extremely drinkable beer; the alcohol--while noticeable in the aroma--does not seem as prevalent; not as sour as I'd like but I still find it to be a refreshing treat nonetheless

A - Pours a dark black color with a touch of brown mixed in and a finger of frothy chocolate colored head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some lace.

S - Aroma is a mix of roasted chocolate malts with some coffee with some dark fruit and raisin sweetness and a touch of oak in the background.

T - Starts off with some roasted and burnt baker’s chocolate malts with some sourness, some dark fruit and cherry sweetness. Through the middle, a bit of roasted coffee flavor comes through with some oak. The finish is a mix of sourness, dark fruit sweetness, dark chocolate, and a bit of oak and vanilla sweetness.

M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry, sour, and roasted finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice dark sour with a good balance of chocolate and roasted flavors and sourness.

Appearance. Pours a really deep red-brown, getting close to black with half a finger of creamy tan head that fades to a skim pretty quickly.

Smell. Roasty malts and sweet chocolate, some apples, orange and banana too.

Taste. Big roasty malts fade to cocoa powder and tart apples. Not as much going on here as I would have thought, but tastes pretty good.

Mouthfeel. Medium body, medium-low carbonation.

Overall. Not bad, but the flavours didn't work all that well together for me. Different, for sure.

A bomber, the Wine Source. It's nice to have the Lips of Faith in my (almost) backyard. In a mini tulip.

A: Dark, deep muddied brown, actually more like black. I kept searching for lighter hues but none came through. As such, the ale is opaque. An off-white head, tinted just a bit with the darkness of the ale, mild lacing.

S: Dark malts, roasted but not quite burnt, with a distinct cocoa aroma. The funk is just below the surface, an acidic scent that has a citric twang. The combination of the two is interesting, as the darker malts add more aroma to the ale.

T: The chocolate malts stand out, a chewy sweetness that flourishes early on in each sip. The sweetness builds until the sourness kicks in. Lemony acidity follows, juicy funk without the normal barnyard uniqueness. The more time I spend, the more the acidity calms down and the flavors come together - there isn't as much tension. The finish builds to a dry crescendo, fleeting chocolate and acidity remaining. Woody vanilla notes are sprinkled throughout.

M: The mouthfeel is smooth, thank you darker malts for aiding there. The sourness, intense at times, isn't an end-all be-all. A good start.

On tap at Churchkey. Pitch black color, with a nice looking eggshell colored head. Head remains at a thin layer for quite some time, coating the entire glass with lace.

Roasty malt up front in the nose, followed by some very nice sour dark fruit. Oak notes follow the fruit and add a great note.

Roasty, with very little sweetness. Nice sour fruit, a bit more on the ripe side than the nose suggested. Oak comes in, but not a great deal of tannin. Faint hint of chocolate flashes by toward the end.

Lighter body, with some soft carbonation gives a nice creamy feel. Alcohol is hidden very well. Very well made.

A - dark with hints of red and brown

S - sour with a bit of medium brown malts

T - sour is most prominent here. The malts are a bit in the finish, but for the most part the sourness kicks. Great combo

M - good carbonation, small bubbles that make the sourness pop.

Overall, this is a cool beer. I like the sourness of the beer combined with the slight brown malts. Cool beer.

On-tap at Papago Brewing in Scottsdale, AZ.

A: Dark, ruby red with a frothy, light brown head. Some good lace, little head retention, but solid legs. Nice looking beer. Looks like a stout after the pour.

S: Some funky fruit and lightly roasted malt. Subtle but inviting.

T: Incredible battle of flavors between dark and roasty to sweet and fruity. Freak dark chocolate, smoky flavors up front from the roasted malt but also wonderful sugary, creamy sweetness in the finish. I'm guessing that's from the hops or wild yeast? I'm happy to call this a wild stout. An lo and behold, according to the NB website this beer is a blend of 80% stout and 20% dark sour wood beer.

M: Great, crisp sizzle from the light carbonation. Tons of flavor fills the mouth. A roasty, lactose-like sweetness lingers on the palate. Very smooth once it warms up.

O: Huge fan of this beer. It really intrigues me. Maybe because it's a dark, delicious "wild ale." An awesome beer from New Belgium!
