A - Pours with a small head of off-white foam on top of a hazy, dark-brown body. The head settles fairly quickly and leaves only minor lace.

S - Coco powder, chili powder, and cinnamon with some toffee malts in the background. Smells like a spice cabinet.

T - Sweet malt with some caramel syrup flavor up front. Lots of spicy character comes out in the middle with notes of chocolate, clove, cinnamon, allspice, and myriad other spices. Finishes sweet with more spices, coco, and caramel.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, and a fairly sweet finish.

D - Really interesting, this is unbalanced and weirdly milk chocolate like, but not undrinkable. It would best be described as similar to Mexican hot chocolate.

This is the most interesting of the Lips of Faith beers I have had.Poured a deep mahogany brown with a thin tannish colored head atop.Smells of chocolate,vanilla bean,and cinnamon,to me like Mexican hot chocolate,really cool.A bunch of stuff going on on the palate with chocolate being predominant as well vanilla,cinnamon and chili comes into play at the back end providing a slow burn.A little light in the mouth but thats the only small drawback to the beer,it's the most interesting take on a chile beer I have had.

The LoF series has been very hit or miss for me, and same with chile beers, so hopefully this is good. Thanks to JonnyGalt (Reddit) for this one.

Pours a light fizzy barely covering head that fades pretty quickly, just a touch of lacing, maybe due to the abv, or possibly the chile, not sure, over a mostly clear cola brown colored beer with some mahogany light coming through.

Nose is interesting and kinda weird, there is some chile in the background, ancho or poblano like chile with a nice green chile aroma but doesn't seem much heat (at least from the aroma), as well as a weird chocolate aroma, cocoa that seems ot have been aged a bit too long, light creamy melted cocoa. Then some light cinnamon and hint of a nutty spicy like cardamom almost but not quite, as well as a biscuity like crusty bread crumbs almost like the edges of a pie or coffee cake. Under all that is some malts, caramel, molasses, some sweet brown malts.

Taste starts like hot cinnamon cocoa, a candy drink almost. Plenty of powdered fake cocoa mix like having a Swiss Miss hot chocolate, but there is plenty of cinnamon in there as well. Then heat kicks in, again not a ton but plenty to let you know it's there, as well as a green chile the ancho mostly, and some hot chiles, chipotle in the middle. Other light spices, again hint of an earthy nutty root like spice I can't really label, and light Xmas like spices but barely. Then malts kick in, some caramel, light molasses and biscuit again, hint of toffee, fair sweetness and other toasty brown malts. Light pie crust again, and coffee cake crumbs. In all that is a hint of booze warmth but that's mostly drowned out by the pepper heat. Finish is sticky and a bit syrupy, long lingering sweet caramel, molasses, some hot cocoa powder mixed to a thicker feel, some lingering heat from the peppers. The heat mostly dissipates fairly quickly, pops in to say hello, then goes back down below.

Mouth is med to a bit heavier bodied, plenty of pepper heat but not overbearing, lighter carbonation.

Overall pretty good, I like the pepper heat, it's a nice level that you def know it's there but doesn't destroy the beer, and even a light pepper flavor which is nice. The malts are nice as well, caramel mocha molasses, toasty bread crumbs, coffee cake, etc. I wasn't a huge fan of the cocoa as it tasted more like Swiss Miss hot cocoa powder rather than cocoa nibs and dark chocolate kinda taste. The cinnamon and other spices are interesting and a nice addition but I wish the cinnamon in particular was a little toned down. The lack of carbonation is probably the only real gripe I have. However, those are nit picking as this was a pretty good beer all around.

On tap at Barleys (SC - 3/2013) and from a 22 oz bottle on Xmas 2015.

Brown with a trace of red, dark and clear, with a moderate size but rather durable head. The feel is a bit thin but otherwise good.

The chilies are quite evident from start to finish and on into the warming in my beily. A nice dose of cinnamon too, with everything in balance. That is, nothing is so strong as to mask all of the other ingredients, including a nice chocolate note. But be forewarned, this is one of the hottest (spicy) beers I’ve ever had

Overall: Much enjoyed and recommended.

A: Pours a clear very dark reddish brown in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and moderate amounts of rich mahogany highlights. The beer has a half finger tall foamy beige head that reduces to a medium thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to slightly stronger aromas of cinnamon, chocolate/cocoa, and chiles. Lighter aromas of roasted malts.

T: Upfront there is a light flavor of roasted malts which is quickly overtaken by the moderate to strong flavors of spiced cocoa - cinnamon, chocolate, and chiles. Light amounts of spiciness mixed with a light to moderate amount of upfront sweetness.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of warming/heat from the chiles.

O: Very enjoyable with a moderate amount of complexity to the flavors and aromas. This beer has a great aroma and a pretty good flavor, one I would definitely get again. Approachable even for folks that do not enjoy a lot of heat/spiciness.

Well, this one takes no prisoners. Huge flavors, peppery hot, and big alcohol. I like the mix of ancho, guajillo, and chipotle peppers. Starts out hot but breathes into a warm and smokey richness. The chocolate is what make it less than drinkable. Nose is mostly cocoa with a little vanilla. Seems like a lot of body to go with the tart taste. Give this points for cojones, though. You'll want to sip this to savor the burn, if that's your idea of a good time.

22 ounce bottle - $7.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia. Bottled on: 12/21/2011.

Appearance: Pours out a clear, amber-brown body with a medium-small, ivory-hued head.

Smell: Aromatic cinnamon powder is fairly large in the nose, but it is not entirely dominating the other notes smelling of semi-sweet chocolate, sugar encrusted bread, vanilla bean, and deseeded peppers.

Taste: Plenty of ground cinnamon scattered over caramel and chocolate maltiness with a fair degree of sweet. Pinch of vanilla sugar. Slightly roasty but there's also a sugary bready quality present. Follows through with an earthy, very slight vegetal taste from the chiles with the heat slowly accumulating across the tongue aided by the alcohol. Sweetish, cinnamon-laced, slightly spicy finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: Cocoa Mole is fairly good for a chile beer which can, if particularly one-note-ish (or even vaguely reminiscent of the nightmare-inducing Cave Creek Chili Beer), have a very limited appeal for me. So, again, good job, NB.

22oz bottle poured into my CBS snifter. It poured dark brown in color with a thin, bubbly head to it. Decent lacing as I drank it.

The Cinnamon is the first thing I notice in the aroma. I get some of the spicy peppers, but isn't really in your face peppery. A good amount of malty, caramel, brown sugar flavors help keep it pretty smooth. Just a hint of chocolate is there. Pretty nice aroma to it, it's very flavorful but everything comes together well.

The taste shows more of the cinnamon spice and malty sweetness to it up front. The finish is where the spicy peppers really start to come out. The peppers bring a little heat to them, but not an overpowering hotness. The flavor profile really compliments the peppers well and it feels pretty smooth for a pepper beer.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with carbonation being moderate. Overall I thought it was a very good beer, they really managed to bring all the flavors together in it. I don't typically think peppers work that well in beer, but in this one they did. A lot of bold flavors and ingredients in it, but they came together very well. I really liked the uniqueness to it as well. Very well done beer overall.

Pours an effervescent brown tinged/orange witha thumb of tan head. Great lacing & average head rentention

S: Faint chiles & a bit dark fruit, a bit of cinnamon

T: Chiles, ciinnamon, a touch of boozey figs &cooca powder up front. Chile heat as this warms, a touch of jammy fig, plus apricot & cherry as this warms, then cinnamon, plus a bit of dryness. Finishes with chile heat, candied apricot & cinnamon

MF: Light/medium bodied with firm carbonation, some sweetness balances the heat fairly nicely

I enjoyed this, one of the better chile beers I've tried & one of the better Lips offerings I had as well

Bottled on 12-21-2011. Poured into a tulip glass

Red brown cola color, small head, small bubbles, some lacing on glass.

Wonderful smell - like biting into a piece of Belgium chocolate with a subtle spicy note (definitely recalls Mexican hot chocolate). complex - Some roasted toasted layers too.

Hit first w/ chocolate taste up front (though less in comparison to the smell) - some herbal and roasty flavors layer in their as well. Fruity alcohol ending, with a small lingering spiciness that heats up. Great taste, some what sweet but balanced with heat.

A bit slick, perfect amount of carbonation, plays well off spices.

Quite enjoyable - esp as a after dinner valentines treat. Wouldn't drink it every day. Unique, better than other spiced beers that I've had.

A: Pours a dark brown, almost black, with a very thin off-white head that has little retention, forming a ring on the top. Streaky, thin lacing forms.

S: The spices dominate here, it reminds me of churros, the fried Mexican dessert. Cinnamon sugar, a little cocoa, and faint peppers.

T: Some chocolate and caramel upfront, mixed with more cinnamon sugar in the middle. The peppers come out on the finish and give off a little bit of heat as the flavor lingers.

M: Medium bodied, rather smooth for a chili beer. Slight heat on the finish that lingers in the back of the throat.

O: Probably the best chili beer I have had to date. The level of heat is perfect and I really like the cinnamon aspect, it isn't muddled like other beers that use it.

I tried this on tap at brewhouse grille in Camp Hill, served chilled in a New Belgium goblet.

The color is dark almost black with translucent clarity and thin pale tan head with fine bead and decent retention. The smell is nice with a malt sweetness mixed with cinnamon-like aroma with mild yeast ester and toasted malt aroma. The feel is great with good base of toasted malt with moderate carbonation and moderate spice which is well balanced with some heat from the pepper in the finish.

The taste is very good with nice earthy cocoa flavor with a slight malt sweetness to keep it from tasting too dry with nutty yet also a slight spicy pepper taste in the middle w/ warming quality and cocoa flavor following with light cinnamon accent in the sem-dry finish. I love this mix of chile with cocoa and cinnamon I just wish it had a more substantial porter base. It is a very good beer, don't get me wrong the spice carries it for me, but basically a Chile beer with cinnamon and cocoa

22oz brown bomber.

LOOK: Deep mahogany hue, tight lacing

SMELL: Fresh chilies, raw cocoa, brown sugar, cinnamon, candied fruit

TASTE: Sweet maltiness within, creamy fullish body, full chili flavor, mild pepper heat, cinnamon, treacle, figgy, spicy throughout, reserved hoppiness, finishes spicy

This is a lovely brew, well rounded with a perfect balance of chili to cocoa to spice and still stays a beer.

The pour is almost mahogany in color with a khaki colored head. A really enjoyable spice aroma. Lots of cinnamon and peppers (though to a lesser degree). The chocolate is pronounced and gives a nice sweetness. Some serious raisin and plum character, too. Pleasantly sweet in terms of the flavor. Lots of chocolate and fruit notes with a sweet bready quality. Good spice and pepper flavor with a subtle earthiness. Really well done all around.
