New Belgium Brewing and The Lost Abbey brewery from San Marcos, California have a shared passion for a variety of things, not the least of which is the wild Belgian yeast brettanomyces. So they decided to join forces and collaborate. Lost Abbey Collaboration is brewed simply with pale malts accompanied by Target, Centennial and Sorachi hops for a hint of citrus. Focusing on their mutual respect for the ingredient, the spotlight shines on the brettanomyces, where a full brett fermentation offers bold pineapple overtones and funky, sour edge. The beer is a shining, golden shade and is warming and dry.

Thanks to Mike for opening this one with me. Lost Abbey and New Belgium creating a beer with Brett... what could go wrong, right? This one pours a dense shade of gold, moderately translucent with lots of tiny sediment hanging in suspension within the beer. Foamy, nearly soapy white head fizzles up and dissipates almost as quickly; moderate lacing left behind.

Whoof, the aroma is an overload of Brett and bready malt. More than I care to handle in one serving, at least. Liberal amounts of funk, biscuit, and heavy, heavy baked bread. Don't get me wrong, I love bread. But not in this capacity when describing a beer. Moderately damp, musky citrus, though not enough to give an appealing sweetness or tartness. I hate to say this, also, but I think this marks the first time I'm actually smelled "band-aids" in my beer. It's got a funky, medical, sterile, weird-ass aroma. Not a big fan - let's hope this one tastes a little better.

Well, don't get your hopes up too high. There really isn't much variety going on here, sadly. Huge, gaping quantities of Brett smash your palate - earthy, wet cardboard, band-aid, damp cellar, and medicinal off-flavors. Yuck. Up front, there's a light lemon and citrus zest that kind of spritzes the tongue for a moment, but the magnitude of Brett comes in quickly and just sweeps that under the rug.

Not sure if it's from the Brett or the malt bill, but this beer is super bread heavy, also, just like the aroma was showing. Some strange astringency wafts over my palate during each successive sip, too. Very yeasty, belligerently funky, and dryer than the Sahara in the finish. It's almost like the Lost Abbey / New Belgium were just trying to play along with this "Brett" craze, so they added a metric shit ton of it to a malt-heavy beer and tried to pass it off as a "wild ale", forgetting that more is not always better.

Very disappointed that a collab between these two breweries, who have compiled an impressive list of wild ales and beers with brettanomyces on their own, missed the mark so badly. Just a mess of a beer with no balance or effort (it seems). Extremely forgettable - Mike and I didn't even finish our pours. Pass on this one.

Poured from a 650 ml bottle into a stemmed tulip.

A: Hazy hay colored hue. Pours about a 1 finger, thick, foamy, white head. Settles quickly leaving a blanket, and a thick foam ring. Plenty of beer ring lacing. Head completely renews with each pour.

S: Hay, sourdough bread, and a slight bit of raspberry.

T: Very bread, with just the slightest indistinct hint of fermented fruit.

M: Light and crisp. Slightly bittersweet aftertaste.

D: Not much resistance. Very light, despite (relatively) high alcohol content.

Atmosphere is really solid. Decent foamy head, and lots of lacing. Nose is simple bready and light fruit accentuates. Bready flavor with an indistinct fruit compliment. Overall, this is a pretty good quaff.

A: Golden yellow hue with a thin but solid and steady hue and fantastic lacing

S: Definitely some cheesy, funky barnyard aromas on top of citrus, apple, tangerine; this is a nice little funky, fruity, and grainy smelling beer; I am excited (despite the poor reviews this beer has gotten)

T: Not quite as funky as I was hoping and a surprising malty sweetness but the fruitiness balances things out and a touch of the cheesy funk in the end lets this come together

F: Quite creamy and sticky--pretty nice body

O: This is solid; I don't get the naysayers on this beer--the brett is prominent and it plays well off the other characteristics

Poured out of a 22 oz bomber into a tulip style glass. No date that I can find on the bottle anywhere, but I'm pretty sure this was a one-time brewing from 2012.

Appearance - Pour generates a slim finger of head at most, resting on a body of golden straw. A steady but faint stream of carbonation rises to the top through bits of sediment suspended in the liquid. After about a minute or two, the head dissipates to a silky looking film on top, leaving decent lacing.

Smell - Dominated by the aroma of yeast and funk, but it's a one-note funk. It lacks any acidic bite to counterpoint the yeast. I get hints of fruity phenols in the background.

Taste - More bread and yeast. Perhaps a suggestion of generic fruity tartness, but not that sharp at all. Boozy sourdough finish. Seems unbalanced and like it needs more time for the Brett to do it's work. I'll hold onto my second bottle for quite awhile before cracking another one open.

Mouthfeel - Light carbonation and a silky-slick coating on the tongue.

Overall, a beer that isn't bad so much as it's just not quite on the mark. Seems unbalanced and I won't be crying about this being a one-time brew. I hope it gets better with a little more age on it, but with NB's standard pasteurization, that seems unlikely.

A-hazy golden straw color with a decent white head and some lacing, some particulate matter

S-malt, yeast, slightly sour, hints of fruit

T-yeasty, malt, little lemon, sour but with some hints of sweetness that are discordant

F-light to medium body with moderate carbonation

O-not bad, but just doesn't quite work for me, flavors not well-balanced

1 pint 6 fl oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Spotted this at the local beer store for $4.99. My first review of a collaboration beer on BeerAdvocate. Excited to try this!

Poured into a Firestone Walker pint glass.

A - Pours the color of a golden yellow lager, with lots of yeast matter slowly maneuvering itself around the glass. Quarter inch of fizzy white head disappears within seconds. Second pour yields another finger of quickly dissolving head and an even bigger gang of sediment floating about.

S - Smell is of yeast and some malt. Slight hint of sour funk, but faint. Almost smells like a Miller Lite, to my disappointment.

T - Very yeasty, slightly bitter, slightly tart. Carbonated; slightly bloating. Not as sour and funky as I had hoped for, but based on the reviews of others, it was to be expected. Not very fruity either, in my opinion, mostly just a very prominent Belgian yeast taste, which isn't my favorite.

M - Carbonated, yeasty, bacteria-like aftertaste from the brettanomyces. Slightly creamy mouthfeel. Pretty dry in the finish. I enjoy the aftertaste to this beer more than I enjoy the rest of it, sadly.

Overall, it is medium-bodied, and highly drinkable with a nicely masked 7.50% abv, yet the beer itself is underwhelming. I was definitely hoping for more from this New Belgium & The Lost Abbey collaboration, but such is life; we live and we learn. Glad to have tried it, yet it is definitely not a beer I will be having again. However, I am looking forward to other beers in the Lips Of Faith series, and with higher hopes for them than this one.
