New Belgium Brewing and The Lost Abbey brewery from San Marcos, California have a shared passion for a variety of things, not the least of which is the wild Belgian yeast brettanomyces. So they decided to join forces and collaborate. Lost Abbey Collaboration is brewed simply with pale malts accompanied by Target, Centennial and Sorachi hops for a hint of citrus. Focusing on their mutual respect for the ingredient, the spotlight shines on the brettanomyces, where a full brett fermentation offers bold pineapple overtones and funky, sour edge. The beer is a shining, golden shade and is warming and dry.

ST: 22oz poured into a flute.

A: Pale gold with a half-a-finger white, creamy head.

S: Lemon meringue pie, grapefruit, brett funk, spicy hops.

T: Very sweet lemonade with hints of sour grapefruit and spicy, green, metallic finish.

M: Medium and sweet

O: An unbalanced beer, Brett has too much sweetness that is not complemented by the green (not refreshing) sourness instead of crisp hops. The finish is a too cloying.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle which I obtained in DC this summer. Pours a cloudy pale yellow, with a thin white head that lingers.

The aroma is full of stinky funk; Parmesan cheese, wheat, mild vinegar, wildflower honey, and a peppery nose-feel. Intense and aromatic, this does not seem to be a beer for the weak-hearted.

Taste is sweeter and less outrageous than expected. The clover honey taste presents first, followed by a pithy bitter that transitions to a subtle sour. Peppery and herby, this tastes a bit like a saison.

Light bodied, with a tangy peppery bite on the tongue, finishing slightly funky.

The smell tries to scare you off, but don't let it. It tastes much tamer than it smells, which is good if you don't want your Brett too funky. I find this to be a pleasant sipper, best served at about 55 degrees. I've not had a bad beer yet from New Belgium's Lips of Faith series; if you can get your hands on one (they don't sell here in Ohio) I'd recommend it.

A- A brilliantly clear light blonde color. No head to speak of.

S- Light citrusy hops. There really isn't anything else there, the yeast might be adding to the fruity citrus character but lemon and tangerine are the only smells.

T- Again light citrus hops seem to dominate an otherwise boring beer. Underwhelming, though not unpleasant.

M- Thin and dry with light carbonation, could use more carbonation but in a timid beer like this it doesn't matter that much.

D- This beer is boring. Why waste perfectly good Brett on an underwhelming lightly flavored beer?

A - Pours a cloudy golden-yellow with a finger of frothy white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of wheat, funky brett and farmhouse smells, lemon zest, tartness, vanilla, and some fruity esters.

T - Starts off with a mix of wheat, lemon zest, light spices, tart fruity esters, and a touch of vanilla. Through the middle, some funky brett comes through with some more funkiness. The finish is a mix of tart lemon, funky brett, farmhouse flavors, and some wheat.

M - Medium-minus bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a tart, funky, and dry finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice sour beer with good brett flavor. Could have used a bit more complexity.

some malt, little bit of hop, and some citrus.

definitely different. a juxtaposition in mouth for sure.

Cloudy yellow-opaque upon pouring. Thick and attractive head of fine, white carbonation. Lovely loopy chain-link style lacing.

Nose is fruity and funky. I get both wild berries and citrus tones. Quite enticing!

Taste is nicely fruity up front, even hinting at some pineapple. Body is heavy, though, and the Soriachi hops add to the tangy quality. I quite liked this one.

A- Pours a light, hazy, golden color into a Stella Chalice. Huge, foamy head, probably 4 fingers or more. Great retention and lacing. Lots of yeast floating and settling both in the bottle and glass.

S- Light and tangy. Some fruity notes of apricot, orange, and maybe a hint of banana. Spicy notes sneak in too with some coriander and clove-like notes.

T- Starts off with a slightly creamy, almost buttery flavor. Transitions into the traditional Belgian wild yeast flavor with a hint of funkiness on the way. Funkiness is only a hint sour, nothing to make you pucker or anything. The yeast flavor profile lingers, dampening out the light malt flavors. I pick up some wheat like flavor, and maybe a hint of hops bitterness towards the end. Finishes dry, with the aftertaste predominantly a wild yeast flavor.

M- Moderate carbonation and a medium weight body. Drinks much heavier than it appears in the glass. Has a slight alcohol bite towards the end, which is surprising for 7.5%. Nothing special here.

Overall, this is an interesting take using brett, but it is not really used to its full extent. Tastes and feels more like a yeasty Belgian golden ale than anything.

S: A rather closed aroma, a bit of orange rind, pale malt, wheat, and hints of funky brett.

T: More of the same from the aroma. Bready malt, some orange and light citrus and again very faint funk.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, on the creamier side.

O: A bit of a let down, the Brett really didn't impart much on this beer...yet at least.

A: Hazy gold, reminiscent of a wit or a cloudy trippel. Has a very white head that receds quickly and leaves some lacing
S: Citrusy, fruity, without being hoppy, has a very “unibroue” yeasty like scent
T: Sweet, fruity, with a touch of bitter and sour on the end. Aftertaste again reminds me of unibroue’s releases, but without being much like unibroue. Ends very dry and champagne like.
M: Very crisp, almost champagne like with very fine bubbles, and not a whole lot of them.
D: Easily drinkable, could easily down to of these 22oz with little trouble.

Never had anything from The Lost Abbey, but I’ve had plenty of New Belgium; their brett stuff has been pretty tasty, at least.

A: Pale gold body, slight haze, with a white bubbly head. Retention is only light powder on top of the body, a coat of lacing covering the inside of the glass.

S: Tangerine, blood orange, and soapy lemon tones, on top of some naturally funky brett; mango and raspberry with cream swim beneath. The brett’s not huge, but it’s there, and it actually has a weird plastic character to it – where did that come from? Other than that, it’s mild and creamy.

T: This one is tough to put a finger on; it’s sort of a delicate yeastiness with some grassiness, layered on top of skunk, brown sugar, banana, and dark fruits. A not-too-pleasant, dull wet wood taste sits at the bottom of it all, too, along with some cinnamon-spice and green hoppiness. The aftertaste is strangely malty, out-of-place raisin and butteriness. Slightly dry to the very end.

M: Thick and smooth, sort of like the texture of orange juice. A little bit of foaminess in the feel.

O: An odd mix of flavors, none of them tasting all that great. The flavors are pretty old-tasting, actually, and that’s the main problem here. Pretty average beer for the money.

A: looks pale yellow, very cloudy, decent sized head

S: orange, pineapple, kind of homebrew-like with its yeasty qualities

T: kind of like pineapple juice with the sweetness and fruity flavor, but it has almost no sourness.

M: medium body, medium carbonation, feels smooth

O: meh, this beer is not a wild ale. Very disappointing in that respect. It's more like an average IPA without any bitterness. There is no sourness from the brett, and maybe a bit of funk.

Golden, transparent, no head, but bubbles along rim of glass

I was looking forward to the colab because I love both the Lost Abbey and the Lips of Faith series. I expected more from this, more complexity. Maybe I should have aged it.

Bomber poured into lost abbey tulip

Pours a yellow color with a nice 2 finger head that leaves some lacing. Nice color to the head. Smells of lemon, funk, soap, and some fruits. Very fresh smelling. Taste isn't quite as funky as I would like. Some yeast and fruits on the palate. Not as complex as I was expecting. Mouthfeel is fairly light with decent carbonation. Overall decent, but not great.

A- Clear golden color with a two finger white head.

S- Pale malts, earthy spice, Brett.

T- Some light fruits, some earthy spices, musty brett, very little maltiness, boozy finish.

M- Light to medium body.

O- Taste like a mediocre beer that had some Brett added to it to try to make it better. I love Brett beers but this is not doing it for me, light on flavor and kind of boozy.

I had this beer on-tap in a one pint New Belgium chalice at Elliott Bay Pizza & Pub in Mill Creek, WA. I guess this is the New Belgium sister beer of Mo Betta Bretta.

Appearance: light golden hue with plenty of haze and a thick finger of creamy white foam with good retention and a nice thick lace.

Smell: light sweet malt with a balanced amount of bretty funk. It works for me.

Taste: sweet golden malt flavor with a nice chalky funk from the Brett. Not sour at all, which is nice; I like the more alkaline character. Good stuff.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of carbonation and a rather nice creaminess. I like it.

Overall: a good wild ale. Not sour, but a good quaffer nonetheless.

[Suggested Glassware: Tulip Glass]

The pour was a hazy medium golden yellow with an average (1-2 finger) white pillowy head that receded slowly for about a minute down to a large puddle with medium collar and excellent sticky sheets of lacing.

The aroma was of a light grain malt and a mild funky Brett yeast with notes of overripe pineapple, pears, citrus (lemon) and a touch of spice.

The taste was lightly sweet and acidic with notes of pineapple and citrus throughout with a nice dose of a tart yeast and a slight bitter spiciness towards the end. The flavor lasted only a short while with a tart yeasty spiciness left behind.

Mouthfeel was just above light in body and very mildly dry in texture with a medium carbonation.

Overall a mildly tart yeasty brew that reminds me more of a Belgian Ale than a Wild Ale...

22 oz bottle. Pours hazy straw yellow with a medium white head that goes to a thin film and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet vegetal malts and some stinky yeast (cheesy onions).

The flavor is sweet sugary malts and tropical fruits with a little musty brett. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, an OK brett beer. The sweetness overpowers the brett. Since they pasteurized, it probably won't come out much more though.

22 oz. bottle poured into a DFH Signature snifter. Bottled on 5/18/12.

A - Pours a hazy golden color with about an inch of dense white head. There is a geyser of carbonation rising from the laser etching in the bottom of the glass to the beer's surface. Good retention and leaves some lacing.

S - Smells of yeast, corn, and lemon. It also has a compost-like blend of earth and funk. I can't really decide whether or not I enjoy the aroma, but it isn't awful.

T - Starts a bit tart with lemon and pineapple. The Bretty funk is more mellow than anticipated. Comes off musty on the back of the tongue.

M - Maybe I waited too long to take the first sip, but it came off flat to me. Finish was dry and saved some of the off-flavors on the back end.

O - I am always intrigued by collaboration beers and couldn't turn this one down. Both breweries are known for beers in this style so my expectations were pretty lofty. The brett funky flavors were not very pronounced. As a matter of fact, none of the flavors really stood out making fro a bit of a bland beer. Not something I will get again, but can't be too upset about a $7 bomber of wild ale.

A 22 oz bottle.

Pours an almost clear straw yellow with minor head that went away.

Nose is faint grain, yeast and fruit.

Taste. A mix of fruits and yeast. The Brett does not seem too strong to me. Not a lot of malt. Slightly sweet and spicy.

Mouth feel is a little syrupy. Alcohol is warming.

Overall this beer series has been hit and miss for me. This one is somewhere in the middle. I think they could have done more with the Brett.

Appearance: Pale gold/honey/straw color, pours with a decent white head, fades quickly to very little, a faint ring - a few spots of lacing

Smell: Interesting - juicy American hops and Belgian influences - fleshy orange, tangerine, and grapefruit, as well as some tropical notes like pineapple - Belgian yeast, but it's subtle - some sour funkiness, but not much considering the name of this beer - some chewy, pale malts, kind of smells like a pound cake

Taste: Mild but good - sweet citrus flesh and tropical fruit juice - light, hoppy bitterness, but mostly just juicy hops - some barnyard funkiness in the background, but I wouldn't call this tart or sour - just mostly sweet - raw, pale grains in the back - maybe this needs some time to mature?

Mouthfeel: Slightly heavier than light bodied, juicy, could possibly use some more carbonation

Overall: Rather strange

Something about this beer feels unfinished. The malts feel oddly raw and it's really not funky like something called "Brett Beer" should be. It's good, but weird.

Appearance: Hazy dark straw. Bright white collar. Almost no head. Some minor carbonation.

Smell: Lemon, yeast, hay, Brett. Yeasty funk. Fresh pineapple and cut grass. Mild earthiness with some slight spiciness and pale malts for support. Very mild. Some pear flesh. Touches of clean horse blanket.

Taste: Mild Brett. Powdery, earthy yeast. Mild spiciness plays in the back. Very restrained. Lemon zest and sweet pale malts. Grass. Uncooked crackers. Pale fruitiness.

Mouthfeel: Lightish, pushes medium with minor carbonation. A little creaminess.

Overall: Decent, but that's how it goes. Brett lite. Nice intro to what it can do.

22 ounce bottle - $7.99 at Lucky's Beverage World in Woodstock, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a hazed, straw-hued body with a medium-small, creamyish, white head. Very scant lace on the descent.

Smell: Slightly sweet-smelling, hay-hinted malts, maybe a little crumpled cookie. Agreeably fruity, with notes of pineapple, pear, apple, and citrus. Mild whole clove hints.

Taste: Light touch of pale malts (with a little sugar cookie sweetness) quickly changing to fruity tastes of sweetened pear juice, pineapple juice, and a sprinkling of fresh lemon zest. Some bitterness coming across, but also some clove-like phenolics. All of the various tastes roll around the tongue until the semi-dry, fruity, creamyish finish with a touch of alcoholic warmth.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Creamyish mouthfeel.

Overall: Well, it's not exactly what I was expecting. Essentially none of the wildness coming across from the brettanomyces. Grab hold of the bottle and shimmy your thumb over "BRETT" on the label. This leaves a more straightforward, honest "BEER" on the front of the bottle.

A: Straw, with some murkiness about.

S: Some brett funk, but phenolics rule the show--perhaps too much. Lightly "burnt plastic" aroma, band-aid, with leather lingering in the background. Subtle citrus.

T: Sweetened lemon, Bretty/leathery funk, and those somewhat undesirable phenolics--burnt plastic & band-aid again. Citrus again lingers in the background.

M: Light, creamy. Medium-high carbonation, which is appropriate.

O: Not the best example of a brett-centric beer. If they cleaned up the phenolics, it may have something going for it. I would imagine the "accidental" pasteurization did not help either...

Addendum: After the tongue gets used to the phenolics (and/or the 7.5% abv sets in), the "burnt plastic/band-aid" becomes less prevalent, allowing the more citrus/tropical notes to come through. Still too phenolic though, even now.

@ Raleigh Times

Hazy golden yellow with apparently vigorous carbonation, but only a slender white head that leaves nice rings behind. Tart-ish citrus juice, pale malt, and yeast aroma. Tastes of sweet oranges, pale malt, light pineapple, spicy lemon, and a very mild funky note. Medium bodied and not as effervescent as it looks.

Not a bad beer, though not particularly wild or exciting either. No super-funky, decidedly "Bretty" characteristics - which is surprising. I think they just missed the mark on this one.

Poured into NB snifter

Pours golden hay, white head that dissipates quickly but lingers about throughout the pour. Hazy like a wheat.

SMELLZ- Bit o' brett smell, bit o' spice.

FLAVORZ- malt sweet, caramel/toffee, belgian esters. Brett makes an appearance on the back end, though its part is fairly minor.

THOUGHTZ- Definitely closer to a brett beer than a sour beer, though even then it is lacking in what I would like in brett character. It reminds me of the bret character in Brux, the difference though is that NB kills the Brett with pasteurization which means that time in the cellar isn't going to change the beer. For six bucks it is a decent beer, and the brettanomyces adds a bit of complexity, but I'm definitely looking forward to its sibling mo betta bretta after being aged for a year or two.
