Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A burly and bitter Imperial IPA, Rampant pours a pure copper and carries the sheen of a rightly hopped beer. The Mosaic and Calypso hops bring stonefruit to the front seat, and the addition of Centennials nod towards citrus for a well-rounded aroma. The taste expands these hops with heavy peach tones and a profoundly bitter bite. There is some malt sweetness to stand this beer up, and Rampant's finish is bone-dry.

12 ounce bottle poured into a tulip

Pours burnt orange with white bright head, slight carbonation and lacing, beer is clear, no head retention. Aroma is of pine, herbal and earthy aromas, hint of peach, but like Ranger, aromas are subtle. Getting more malts than hops, sweet, hint of pine, herbs, peaches, finishes slightly hoppy with a dry finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a dry finish. A lot better IIPAs out there than this, might be a good IIPA for a starter but if you desire more hops and malts, then this one is not for you.

Another good beer from New Belgium. A bit on the hard side, this one will sneak up on you if you drink too many. Nonetheless, this is a great IPA if you are a hop head looking for a great hop bite (like myself at times).

Poured into pint glass. Pours amber, clear and clean looking. Head dissipates quickly. No apparent carbonation by sight.

Aroma is hoppy, and yes, peachy sweet. But also a little sourness, like overripe grass. Not sure it's entirely a good smell.

Taste is hoppy to start, astringent and sweet. Biscuit, cardboard, with pine and raisin (that's the sweet). Very subtle peach, but maybe that's power of suggestion because the bottle says so. I feel malt trying to assert itself but not enough to balance it in the first half of the sip. The hoppiness I usually like (Green Flash, Tricerahops, Ruination, etc.) is not present here.

Dank (and it's bitter bad, not bitter good if you know what I mean) builds in the taste. My wife wouldn't cop a second sip of this if she saw it on the counter unattended. Malt becomes more dominate later in the glass. Aftertaste is boozy, bitterness lingers and mellows. Oily feel, a little heavy to me, maybe a tinge of soap at the end. I am liking it more once I've had half the glass (sure that's what they all say).

Many imperial/DIPAs seem to get lost between bitter, malt, or hops and this one seems all over the map taste wise, doing a little bit of everything and not committing to any direction. I agree with BA user Bfarr that Ranger has more flavor than this. I think there are better DIPAs out there and New Belgium does other styles better.

I am admittedly not an IPA kinda guy, but this particular imperial IPA was very tasty.

I really liked the dark golden color and thick head that pours out of the bottle. This is followed by good lacing down the glass. The odor from the brew is at first your run-of-the-mill IPA scents, but when you take in the odor even more, it has a sweetness to it that is unlike any other. What surprised me most was the thick, creamy feel of the brew in my mouth. It was a good contrast to the carbonation, which wasn't too overpowering. Taste-wise, I enjoyed this IPA just about if not most others, and felt it was an above average IPA. Good job New Belgium.
