Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A burly and bitter Imperial IPA, Rampant pours a pure copper and carries the sheen of a rightly hopped beer. The Mosaic and Calypso hops bring stonefruit to the front seat, and the addition of Centennials nod towards citrus for a well-rounded aroma. The taste expands these hops with heavy peach tones and a profoundly bitter bite. There is some malt sweetness to stand this beer up, and Rampant's finish is bone-dry.

While this beer gets a respectable rating - and its all subjective anyway - I guess I am in the crowd (if their is one) that thinks Rampant doesn't get the love it deserves. For what it is - a year-round DIPA, that is readily available and very reasonably priced. So with that said here is my review...

On draft - Poured into a pint glass

L- Poured with about a finger of white head. The color is in between golden and amber - unfortunately it's head dissipated pretty quickly after it's pour. There was low to moderate lacing throughout.
S- I was disappointed with the smell. With so many quality IPA's and DIPA's coming out this really doesn't stand up too well with many of its pungent and aromatic brothers. However, I pick up sweetness from the malt, citrus, pine - nothing is very distinguishable since it is a relatively faint.
T- This is where rampant makes up for it's previous short comings. It is a very well balanced beer. I really enjoy the malt bill which gives a semi-sweet and bready base for piney, citrusy and peachy hops to shine. While I think it's balance may hurt it in some peoples eyes- since it doesn't really hit you with a dominant and distinct hop profile- I think the hops are presented well and it is incredibly drinkable. I actually find a balanced and drinkable DIPA refreshing in a world of hop bombs (which I love too).
F- Well carbonated, medium body. It is relatively crisp and not sticky for a DIPA - which along with it's taste makes it an incredibly drinkable beer. Bitterness does not stay on the tongue very long.
O- While I appreciate it's smooth and balanced characteristics - I know many will find it unexciting for the category - Even though I agree there are much better beers in it's category, I think it's clean and balanced taste and feel make it a great value at it's price point.

A: Golden hue with a huge frothy and steady head; with good retention and good lacing

S: So pungent--it overwhelms you immediately after cracking the bottle open; citrus, peach, dank weed, herbs, floral, onion, pine--seriously, this is an oily aromatic bouquet of awesomeness--a bit of toasty maltiness and, of course, some subtle booze

T: Bitter but way less bitter than I expected: fruity, herbally, grassy hops--oily too; the toasted malts linger; I wish some sweetness balanced with what becomes a growing bitterness

F: oily and resinous--nice medium, chewy mouthfeel

O: A really awesome smelling and good, albeit strange, tasting beer; I like it but this not your typical IPA

Strong alcohol kind of suppresses the floral and citrisy/grassy flavors/aroma but still a very nics drink. Bot a big fan of New Belgium but this along with Snapshot are very good offerings.

Tasting notes: Intriguing flavors in this one ... Good Calypso showcase. Sweet cotton candy nose, with the hops skewing more tropical/floral than citrus. Pineapple and menthol cough drop on the palate, along with some stewed pears, green mango, yellow grapefruit, cantaloupe, peach, oregano. Interesting stuff. Here, the Mosaic seems to be used more for its resinous potency than its bright fruitiness, although there is orchard fruit flavor galore, as advertized. Notable booze flavor. Faint caramel in the background. Rather thin body but still coats the mouth. Finishes clean. Well worth an investigation by hop fans.

Pours a glorious amber with s solid white head that fades quick but leaves a nice lace on the glass.
Aromas of fruit, mild spice and hops.
Taste like a modern day IPA. Grapefruits, hoppy pine and oddly enough, a hint of Double Bubble chewing gum.
Pleasant subtle mouth feel with a distinct bitterness in the back of the tongue!
Nice presentation but just North of the middle of the pack!

Rampant Imperial IPA brewed by New Belgium Brewing, with an ABV of 8.5% This brew pours out a nice deep amber color, with a nice white head. The smell of Rampant Imperial IPA is rich with hops , grains and malts. Now for the taste, it is bold with hops. This is a nice full bodied brew. You also pick up some nice grains and malts at the end of this brew. Rampant Imperial IPA has a real nice balance to it, the hops at first are a bit overpower powering but nothing to bad. The mouthfeel of Rampant Imperial IPA is bold smooth and clean. This brew has a clean aftertaste, something hard to find in this style of brew. Overall I'm giving Rampant Imperial IPA a 4.25 out 5. I would buy this brew again.
