Rampant Imperial IPARampant Imperial IPA

Brewed by:
New Belgium Brewing
Colorado, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A burly and bitter Imperial IPA, Rampant pours a pure copper and carries the sheen of a rightly hopped beer. The Mosaic and Calypso hops bring stonefruit to the front seat, and the addition of Centennials nod towards citrus for a well-rounded aroma. The taste expands these hops with heavy peach tones and a profoundly bitter bite. There is some malt sweetness to stand this beer up, and Rampant's finish is bone-dry.

look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

I poured this chilled into an IPA glass

The color is deep golden with light haze and 3 finger head with very fine bead visibly carbonated with web-like lace. The smell is very citrus and floral with orange rind and light floral scent mixed with mild fruity yeast ester and slight alcohol aroma. The feel is very bitter up front with medium high carbonation and slight warmth of alcohol with light sweetness and resinous texture with a mostly dry finish.

The taste is citrus oriented with a grapefruit quality and pine-like bitter taste wtih almost salty intensity and intense peppery spiciness with warming alcohol in the back of the throat with slight sweet flavor but not quite caramel in the finish with light nutty malt in the background. The overall impression is a pretty decent yet not quite exceptional Imperial IPA to me. It is a little to alcohol forward in the taste for me but better than most with more hop flavor than less as far as this style goes. It is lacking hop flavor which is what I like to see more of instead of just bitterness
