At first taste, this beer was too sour and too much cranberry flavor. It lacked any hop flavor or aroma. I initially rated it 3.375. However, as I have worked through the 6 pack over several weeks, it has grown on me. It is still sour and needs hops, but the after taste is that of pumpkin spice reminiscent of Belgian beers or a fine hefeweizen. In the end, New Belgium lived up to their goal of brewing in the Belgian style however untraditional. Thus the improved rated to 3.75.

Brewed with Pale, Munich, Caramel malts, Pumpkin juice, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Allspice, Cranberries, Lemongrass. Hopped with Target. 6.0% ABV

Pours out to a slightly chill hazed light amber, forming a nice big creamy light yellow head with superior retention and thick lacing. Moderate carbonation, ~2.5 carbs or so. The aroma is quite nice, one gets the obvious cinnamon and ginger, but I actually get cranberry and orange as well. Delicate, very nice nose. Mouthfeel is smooth lightly tart, with a medium body. The taste is a recap of the aroma...the cranberry comes through nicely as well as the spices. Thankfully, the spices are not overpowering like many pumpkin beers. The malt base is a bit flimsy. I'd like to see mostly munich and some biscuit malt along with a little darker crystal like 40 to accent the toasty sensation of the pie crust. It needs a touch more residual sugars or perceived sweetness and body to be balanced, but still, this is much better than most pumpkin beers. Bitterness is very mild, which is a must in this style of beer. No perceptable off flavors or aromas.

A very nice fall seasonal. I don't think I've ever had a pumpkin beer that makes me want to buy a 6'er, but this comes pretty close.
