Fluffy 1/20 finger slightly darker head, almost pitch black beer, bit of lacing.

Nose is nice, plenty of chocolate, creamy milk choc, cocoa nibs, dutch choc, very rich lush choc, oats, lactose and plenty of, caramel, toffee, creamy malts.

Taste is biscuity malt, more lactose and creamy chocolate milk, bit of bakers choc, creamy mil choc and dutch, cocoa, caramel, toffee, bits of dark choc, chewy bready malts, hint of earthy hops, hint of roast and coffee. Finish is dry and slightly sticky, more oats, choc, and hint of earthy spicy hop bitterness.

Mouth is med to fuller bodied, creamy and lush, lower but decent carb.

Overall nice, their best beer yet, nice malts, creamy, choc, lactose, caramel, hint of hops, smooth.

22oz brown bomber with no freshness date.

LOOK: Dark chestnut brown, excellent head retention

SMELL: Brown bread, mild coffee, cocoa powder, sweet, toasted bread, burnt raisins, chalky yeast, spicy alcohol

TASTE: Creamy, smooth, full-ish body, sweet, chocolate, dark roasted coffee, dark bread, crackers, oak, black currants, yeast, esters, hop bitterness, semi-sweet roasted finish

A damn good offering for a winter seasonal. Has the element of a sweet stout but is much deeper and is also very warming without being too rich.

Pours a solid dark brown color with the faintest of ruby highlights when held to light and a decent bubbly off white head that displays moderate retention and lace. Smells of sweet and roasted malts, a hint of vanilla, oak, alcohol and tart dark fruits. There's an almost oak and lactic tartness in there that's faint and actually kind of pleasant. Taste is sweet and malty up front with barely enough roast to be considered a stout. Lots of oak and vanilla sent me searching the website to see if this is barrel aged? Tart dark fruits and lactose sweetness come through in the flavor as well. Medium body with a medium to light level of carbonation and a sweet slick mouthfeel. Nice brew kind of an oak aged milk almost stout. Very flavorful but could use a bit more roast in the mix.

22oz. bottle served in a standard pint. Pours the color and clarity of cola with a loose, half inch tan-colored head that sizzles and pops as it gradually recedes into a fairly consistent skim that coalesces around the edges.. A few residual swaths of lacing, but not much in the way of adhesion. Nose expresses buttery notes, toffee and a suggestion of oak and lactose - it's very interesting and complex for a Milk Stout I have to say. Taste consistent with nose; however, let's start with the finish - buttery, woody, butterscotch and perhaps some slight oxidation. When all is said and done; however, the flavors come off a bit muted and it's missing the characteristic lactose sweetness I've come to associate with the style. Mouthfeel is light-medium (but closer to light) with a lively carbonation which is a bit too assertive for the style. I'm also not getting much of a creamy texture which is often a style consistent element. There's also a hint of dryness at the finish most likely attributable to the oak character. Overall an interesting take on the style; however, all the elements don't really come together for me. Perhaps if there was a bit more of a malt presence and less carbonation, it would round things out a bit more.

22 oz bottle was poured into a stemless wine glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger mocha head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a pitch black color with no clarity, bit visions of tiny bubbles towards the top of the glass. Some lacing on the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Sweet lactose sugar, roasted coffee, chocolate, oak, vanilla, and a little smoke. Can't wait to try this one out.

Taste: Very tasty brew. All of the aromas above blended nicely.

Mouthfeel: Silky and creamy smooth, a little dry, full bodied, medium carbonation, and very drinkable.

Overall: Pretty solid brew from the brewery. I good take on the style and the oakiness gives the beer subtle flavors and characteristics.

Blue Hills Brewery released a new holiday seasonal this year. The new winter release is a milk stout named Three Peaks. I picked up a bomber this week to try it. Poured into a standard pint glass. Dark brown color. Not much head; would have liked to have seen a bit more here. There doesn't seem to be much carbonation or lacing either. Smell has a roasted coffee and campfire aroma. Taste is a winner. Lots of flavors of oak and black licorice. The oak seems to be the dominant flavor here though. I would like to see the oak toned down a bit, which would allow other flavors to stand out more. The addition of the lactose gives the mouthfeel a nice creaminess, and there is a tiny bit of hops that hits your palate right at the very end. I really like this beer as great stout, even though it's a bit of a stretch for a milk stout. But, Blue Hills took a milk stout and added their twist to the style, and that's commendable. I will be drinking more of this in the future.

14oz serving on draft at Meadhall

A- Dark brownish black, fairly opague, about a quarter-half finger of mocha off-white creamy head.

S- Sweet lactose sugars, dark chocolate, hints of roasted malts and espresso.

T- Very sweet milk/dark chocolate taste, with hints of roasted malts and some espresso, light hops in the background.

M- A little bit on the heavy side, well-balanced, creamy, definitely smooth and drinkable, alcohol well hidden.

O- This was a good milk stout, a nice offering from Blue Hills. It kind of reminded of Left Hand's milk stout with a little bit higher abv which was well hidden. It was definitely on the sweet side and is one of the better milk stouts that I've had.

22 fl oz brown bottle served in a snifter.

Thin maple in color with tones of oak. Lightly tan, porous head that leaves an intact ring around the snifter's rim and pools of bubbles in the middle. Patchy lacing with decent strength.

Bitter, dark chocolate aroma; the rough, roasted character and dryness is aided by fresh espresso and hazelnut. The fresh vinous fruit: plum, grape, etc., is a bit surprising on account of the sharpness and its contrast to the deep, roasted aromatics.

Young fruity esters: plum, grape, and cherry up front that provide a mild tartness. The roasted, dark chocolate that was foreshadowed in the aroma is almost subdued until mid sip. Rough, floral hops fill the middle with notes of hazelnut and espresso. A dry finish is followed by more of the fresh, vinous fruit.

Full bodied; relatively smooth despite leaning more towards the dry, roasted end of the flavor spectrum.

A pretty confusing offering; the aromas and flavors don't quite match a milk/sweet stout style, but nothing is unpleasant here. Certainly a unique offering that I would have again.

Three Peak Holiday Stout opens with a dark malty nose, ripe with coffee, tobacco, and light ash aromas, and joined in these darker tones by chocolate and black malts, as well as touches of fig and black cherry. A heavy shot of coffee cream helps temper the nose somewhat, as well as do hints of caramel and toffee. The aromas as a whole are enticing, but somewhat lighter than expected, and move more towards the sugary side of the palate, as opposed to the dark and ashen, giving the beer a distinct caramel macchiato overtone that seems strange in a stout.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a huge shot of ash, tobacco, and black coffee grounds, the strange sugars in the nose almost gone the instant they hit the tongue. Black and chocolate malts abound here, and the brew has little hints of sugar, except around the edges, where caramel, cream, and molasses fight to get themselves noticed. In subsequent sips the ashen flavors abate somewhat, having dulled the tastebuds in their initial blast, but still manage decent levels of bitterness. The aftertaste is a continuation of the ashy, tobacco smoke flavors, as well as black and chocolate malts, and lingers--especially the ash and smoke part--for a very long time, creating the sensation of just having smoked a cigarette while drinking creamed coffee. Mouthfeel is medium-light to medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is good fare, but does tend a bit too much towards the ash and tobacco profile. The result is a beer that feels out of balance, needing more sugars to help counter the bitterness. Still, those who like bitter, ashy stouts will find this a welcome addition to their cellars.
