Uerige Sticke gibt es zwei Mal im Jahr im Ausschank - am jeweils dritten Dienstag im Januar und Oktober. Dieses Bier wird mit mehr Malz und Hopfen gebraut und ist deutlich gehaltvoller als Uerige Alt: Hinter dem intensiven, eleganten Aroma verbergen sich 6% Alkohol.

Der ungewöhnliche Name leitet sich davon ab, dass man in früheren Zeiten "stickum" ("hinter vorgehaltener Hand") weiter erzählte, dass der Braumeister wohl etwas zu großzügig beim Abwiegen der Zutaten war.

Der höhere Alkoholgehalt gestattet Lagerzeiten, die beträchtlich über das von uns garantierte Mindestfrischedatum hinausgehen.

presentation: 11.2oz bottle with a shield shaped white, red and gold label on the front. bottle is sealed with a counter-balanced swing-top cork. bottled on date is "25.10" i don't understand this dating system and i can't read all the german text, but the ABV is displayed at 6%.

appearance: pours ruby-brown with amber highlights in a tall pilsner. (didn't have a stange) light off-white fluffy two-finger head quickly dropped to a quarter inch that stuck around despite only noticing occasional bubbles rise from the bottom. head laces well but not much stick down the glass.

smell: floral overtones. caramely malt sweetness with a light alcohol aroma.

taste: sweet vanilla-caramel again with very, very light floral hop bitters. finishes dry with a hint of alcohol. a little banana bready as the brew warms.

mouthfeel: silky smooth and creamy with very little carbonation. not enough carbonation for my tastes, but i assume this is true to style. velvety swallow.

drinkability: very drinkable as this is one of the smoothest beers i've ever consumed. little to no carbonation makes it even easier to go down, but doesn't help mask the light alcohol finish.

overall: i've had this before, but i remember it being better. maybe i should have reviewed it then, and maybe my tastes have changed since then. i'll have another for a best 2 outta three. almost perfect mouthfeel and drinkability to style (and despite what i prefer), but leaves a little to be desired. overall, a very good altbier, and a definite must try.

Picked this up at State Line in Maryland. Served in a Mikasa tulip. Currently the #1 Altbier. Review #3000.

Pours a fairly-hazy dark tawny-mahogany with a thick off-white head that lasts for awhile and leaves quite a bit of lacing behind. The nose brings forward a good amount of bread crust and some earthy hops. Dry malt and a slight bit of roast. The flavor brings some light malty toasted character and some bread crust. Along with that, there's some earthy hops and an accompanying dryness. Light caramel character in there as it warms more, though the earthy hops really begin to take over, especially with the bitterness in the finish. Medium body and lighter carbonation. Really nice example of the style.

Pours a clear chestnut, almost mahogony brown with a thin cap of tan head.

Aroma of earthy, sweet malts, toffee, herbal hops. A bit of medicinal phenols.

Taste has a surprising herbal bite, rich toasted malts, some graininess, a bit of dry nut character, a hint of dried dark fruit (prune, date). Overall, dry and earthy, with a minerally tang and some astringency in the finish. Semi-sweet finish leaves a lingering herbal presence and some nutty malt.

Mouthfeel is medium, with a clean palate that can make it feel a bit thin. Great carbonation level and very drinkable.

Overall, recommended, although not as enjoyable to me as the doppel sticke.

The beer evacuates the 330ml brown swing-top bottle a somewhat hazy copper with a moderate size frothy light tan head that dissipated quickly leaving a thin coating of lace to conceal the glass. Nose is a mix of sweet malt, and hints of hops, fresh and crisp, nut-like, start is nicely malted, light at the top. Finish is moderately carbonated with the hops pleasantly spicy, extremely dry and somewhat sour aftertaste, lingers long upon the palate, a drinkable beer, but I much prefer the Dopplesticke.

This beer pours a hazy brown. The head was thin, and quickly disappated. The initial flavor is a bit hoppy and bitter, transitioning into a malty, almost doppelbock like flavor. The beer is dry, and doesn't leave much of an aftertaste. It hides its alcohol content well. A flavorful beer that's easy to drink.

Hop bitterness plays with bitterness from the roast in the malts to create a dark, toasty, puckering brew with a beautiful sticky head and lacing. Some toasty grains and husks are present as well amid a subtle, but warm, earthy backdrop. Medium light body surprises the senses. Dry finish.

A murky, muddy brown with reddish hues around the edges and a nice little dash of tinged foam to top it off. From the side it looks more that muddy brown, while looking at it from the top down, oddly enough, is where the deep mahogany/reddish appearance makes its presence.

The nose is sweet, first and foremost with a touch of tartness riding right along, piggy back style. This is your old world sweet: raisins and figs and a woody earthiness. This beer just reminds me more and more of antique furniture. In a good way. Complex.

We begin our journey... nah, just kidding that's dumb. That same raisin sweetness is the first guest to jump in, followed up with those figs and then a surprising twist of dull earthy hops and what I think of as a pilsener type of finish. In between more of that mustiness. Dominated (as it should be by malts). Some caramel works its way in there and an almost pumpernickel breadiness. In addition to the hops there's some zest bordering on sourness, but it backs off before the light hits its face, leaving us with a lingering tartness, accentuated by an occasionally bright sparkling carbonation.

I honestly had no idea what to expect with this one. I picked it up on a whim, so my expectations were low/absent. What I came away with was a very intriguing brew: complex and musty and quite enjoyable. Very glad I stumbled across this one.

Swing top bottle poured into a polkal. Erupted with a huge pop on open and scared the family dog :) Decanted carefully but still ended up with a huge head. Nice cloudy brown beer that I found very inviting.

Malts dominate the aroma on this one but there is a tiny bit of flowery goodness in the mix. Comes across a little like grapefruit. The flavor is very strong. A gentle sweetness is presented up front but is balanced against very strong bitterness on the finish. In the middle I sensed a lemon or grapefruit style fruitiness and hints of peppermint with roasted malts.

This is a very dry finishing beer and it was too much carbonation for my tastes. The body was ligher than the look would indicate but was fine otherwise. The only thing that was really holding back the drinkability was the amount of air. A stronger pour may have cleared that up.

A good beer, but a bit hard to find and expensive in the states.

2nd review ever..
Serving = Not possesing a Stange or Collins glass I used a Pokal. The swingtop opens with a hard spray of gas.

App. = Bright yellow orange in the light, amber out of it. Somewhat bigger than average off-white head.

Smell = Light bready yeast and flowery dry hop smells with a licorish undertone, some faint alcohols. Some hidden fruityness characteristic of the style.

Taste = Bready, then finishes with a sweet licorish taste.

Mouthfeel= Chewy, average carbonation.

I could drink several of these with pretzels on hand, it reminds me of a sweeter Vienna Lager somehow.

Dark red and brown, good head of foam that shrinks slowly. Got good lacing.

Smells hoppy, almost if not a fruity sort of hoppiness going on. Some bread.

Nice hoppy fruity taste with a backbone of bread malt. Also some light caramel malt.

Medium body, lightish co2.

Pretty easy drinker and I love the swing tops their beers come in. Worth more purchases.

Aroma has a good complexity of German pilsner and Munich malts. Spicy, peppery, and slightly floral hop notes are present. Low amount of fruity esters.

Copper-like color, formed a 1-2 finger off-white head which settled down but retained itself well. Good, not brilliant, clarity.

Flavor includes a moderate but very present amount of spicy hops and a medium to medium-high level of bitterness. Complex malty flavors mirrored the aroma with a mild chocolate/toasty addition. The finish is dry with a lingering bitterness. Very slight sulfur presence.

Medium-light bodied, smooth. Moderate carbonation. Surprisingly light bodied for its complexity in malt character. Would like a wee more body.

This ones a little over-the-top in alcohol for a Dusseldorf Altbier. Never the less - good balance and well paired german malts and hops. I don't have another bottle but if I did, I would pass up. In Dusseldorf these are frequently session beers and I'm just not picturing this with the same level of drinkability.

Bottled 15. January 2010, into tulip. Uniformly cloudy, dark coppery to bronze verging on brown body with rather short lived off white head that sets to a stable film.
Dominant aroma of noble hops (predominantly floral and spicy in character) is underlain by sweet, toasty, nutty malts and faint esters of plum. Assertive hoppy bitterness (with notes of citrus rind) prevails over the sweet, toasty malts. Slightly astringent with semi dry, bittersweet nutty finish.Medium bodied, with moderate carb, goes down very smoothly. Good, but not as pleasing as its more potent Doppelsticke brother.

Big thanks to dyan for this extra in trade! Bottled on 10.08; Code 09.09. Served from bottle into a Grolsch kolsch. Pours a light brown that turns to brown as you go up the glass with a two finger off-white head that remained throughout. Maintained nice lacing throughout. The aroma was comprised of malt, grain, and subtle caramel. The flavor was of malt, grain, citrus, spices, and subtle caramel. It was light on the palate with low carbonation. Overall this was a very nice brew. It was amazingly smoother than I thought it would be by the appearance. Had a very nice balanced and complex flavor to go along with it. Definitely glad I got to try this one.

Bottle date 10/2008; code 9/2009. Into a Riedel Extreme riesling glass...

Swing top pop is HUGE and almost right in my face...do we have a borderline gusher? HUGE dulce de leche head looks like the top of a root beer float after you pour over the ice cream. Caramel/bourbon hued body has ample carbonation and good lacing.

Creamy mangoes and plums? Really? Light caramel malt with mild Saaz-ish presence. Slight sour note of maybe dark cherries. With the boom from opening could there be a mild infection here?

Very austere malt...again, mild sour cherries. Don't think the infection is a issue...just a really dry alt maybe? Noble and Saaz hop presence provide balance.

Palate feel is husky but a little mild...hops get slightly grassy with the stewed malt. All in all it rounds out to a smooth, somewhat soothing finish.

Very decent, especially with a little warmth on it. Nothing I seek out every day (the style in general) but not a bad example at all.

Pours a clear, brown color. 5/4 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of dry hops, pale malt, hint of grain, slight earthy malt, hint of caramel, and hint of roasted malt. Fits the style of an Altbier. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, earthy malt, slight pale malt, slight roasted malt, slight dry hop, and hint of grain. Overall, good appearance, aroma, and body.

Hands down the coolest beer bottle EVER. I’d give it a 6 for aesthetics alone. But, you can’t review the bottle. So…

This beer poured a thick white head with a lovely hazy reddish/brown body.

The nose was a mix of clean malt, alcohol and a soft rich caramel.

The taste was medium to actually thick bodied. A soft carbonation. An in your face German earthy, classic almost skunk, hop flavor dominates. A nice even upfront bitterness with a beautiful rich, but german subtle, malt flavor is present from start to finish. There’s some hints of pepper, spice and a very strong alcohol punch that takes hold as it continues.

Quite a fine beer. So simple yet just a perfect example of an alt. There’s really not much to it though. It’s big and malty where it needs to be big and malty. It’s earthy hoppy and bitter right where it needs to be. It’s a nice beer.

Poured from a 330mL bottle into my Uerige stick glass. Bottled on 27.10 (October 27, 2008?), making this over 8 1/2 months old I think.

Liquid is sienna/copper with mahogany/rust highlights. Very murky appearance with small yeast globules swimming around. Poor head development and retention; light but persistant carbonation maintains a thin ring of foam though. Fast running legs, but very minimal lacing.

Roasted and caramel malt comes through in the nose, with supporting aromas of fruit and flowers. Pleasant, unique, and restrained.

Honest hop bitterness on the palate, with a tart yeasty sting around the edges of your tongue. Finish is quite dry like toasted sourdough bread. Perhaps some rye flavors and a little bit of funk and malt liquor as well. Tiny bit of DMS I think, but not unwelcome actually...

Pretty light-bodied, though the yeast gives the mouthfeel some depth. You could put a few of these away pretty quickly I imagine (though their cost in California is rather prohibitive).

BJCP suggests this be entered as a specialty ale, but it isn't particularly special really. A bit more assertive and complex than a "regular" altbier, but only just. I may revise this review if I find a fresher bottle. Looking forward to comparing to the Doppelsticke next.

Pours a murky, ruby-brown color with an off-white head. The aroma is filled with sweet caramel, dark fruit, and toffee. There are hops, but they are somewhat muted by the malt. There is a heavy breadiness in the flavor with plenty of hop bitterness for balance. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, thick texture and a bittersweet finish.

Overall, this is smooth and highly drinkable with layers of flavor and plenty of body; the trademark and beauty of so many classic German beers.

Pours a brilliantly clear ruby amber color that is topped by a frothy, thinnish, tan colored head. The aroma is quite fruity with notes of brandy, and rum, hints of strawberry, citrus and lightly spicy notes. Actually a fairly interesting aroma that is still intriguing after these 6 months. The taste is lightly sweet and fairly malty with notes of caramel. This is quite fruity as well with notes of cherry, raisins, and a bit of strawberry and some notes of bergemot as well. For some reason the fruity character in an Alt I have always associated as an interesting mix of hop and malt character. This has held up much better, in the voyage across the Atlantic, than the regular Alt did, though it stills suffers quite a bit from the voyage.

Poured into a pint glass from the 12oz long neck bottle.

A--nice thin, off white head and a medium dark brown body. Some what murky looking.

S--nutty, fruity

T-Sweet malt, toast, caramel, but with some noble hop finish that is clean.

M--medium with a clean hop finish

D--Great German Alt. No off import flavors. Great representation of the style.

Appearance: clear amber / copper in color with a nice 1" head that lingers a while. Spot or two of lace developed.

Smell: mild caramel is all that is picked up.

Taste: full bodied caramel flavors, ripe fruits, and a touch of honey sweetness. Mild bitterness.

Mouthfeel: smooth with a hint of crispness at the start, and finish is smooth. Caramel lingers shortly on the tongue after swallowing. Medium bodied.

Drinkability: nicely drinkable as a few bottles can easily be quaffed. Nicely balanced and hits the tastebuds just right.

Pours a deep brown with ruby hues. A large three finger light tan head develops and reluctantly receeds after a great deal of time into a frothy clumpy pile leaving spotty lace around the glass.

Aroma is pleasant. A slight hoppiness marked by subtle bitter tones accompanied by nice toasted malts giving a slight caramel feel.

Taste is quite nice. Flavors of toasted bread with malt sweetness starts the beer off. Maybe a little banana as it warms, it also has a slight grainy feel. Very enjoyable.

Mouthfeel is fairly full, creamy, and lightly carbonated.

Drinkability is fairly high. Goes down smooth and easy, no noticeable alcohol strength and great flavors.

On draft at Churchkey in D.C. Beer is copper. Tons of head here, tight white bubbles form a really nice head, but low carbonation, lots of lacing as the head falls away. Beer is clear, a really attractive alt.

Smell is really quite malty and nothing else is really happening here, moving on.

The beer is a little sour, a light burnt flavor is there too, beer is blunt. Fast ending. There is a lot of back palate nuance but it disappears so quickly when the beer is gone there isn't time to decide what it is. By the time I think I'm figuring it out, the beer is gone. Some subtle esters and fruit flavors.

Beer is medium bodied, I don't know why I was expecting a thinner beer but I know when I'm wrong, the mouthfeel was good and the drinkability is high. I would recommend this beer to other beeradvocates.

Liquid copper in a glass. Head is around an inch thick and the color of a marshmellow. Nose is a bit understated but I get honey and caramel. Taste is much the same, but the alcohol gives me the idea that maybe they aren't trying to conceal it. It's in your face. There's also a grainy and sour taste in the finish that isn't unpleasant. Mouth is very nice. Thanks to Clickpush for providing this!
