Style: Altbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:

330ml bottle from Good Spirits Co. Wine & Beer, Glasgow (£4.10):
An interesting one from Uerige & one that was definitely better than their Uerige Alt that I tried last, although it wasn't exactly miles ahead. The beer had a slightly more hoppy feel to it with some floral touches on top of the caramel sweetness & toffee flavours. There was still some earthy touches with this one as well though & the balance seemed a little better too but I still don't think it's a beer that I'll be running back to again unless I find myself in Düsseldorf at some point; still it was well worth trying & it's another decent altbier to say I've tried.

Pours a dark brown clear color with glowing ember hints in it, and has a huge, fluffy eggshell head on top.

Smells of flowery grass, dried lemon peel and caramel. Its rustic bread maltiness defines the very inviting foundation in this, with an extra layer of herbal hops on top.

Very refreshing with a lively carbonation, countering sweet malts and dry hops and therefore establishes a very well working balance, disguising perfectly the higher octane level of the beer.

Tastes of an aqueous softness which slowly develops whole grain bread, caramel, bakers chocolate and toasted nutshells. A split second after this becomes established, herbal, utmost dry hops hammer down on the palate. The immediate, uncompromising hop impact gets very well balanced by the cleaning effervescence and sweet toffee, creating a truly enjoyable drinking experience.

This is the Uerige Alt*2, featuring a remakable hop dryness, which you won't find in any other traditional german top fermented ale. This is far away from being a malt defined Dunkel, this here comes in to kick some butt. It wouldn't be a well crafted beer if despite its strong headed aporoach maintains a great easiness in drinking. Those two aspects combined together make up for a great beer.

This is a tasty German beer that I picked up on a whim. It's my first altbier, and I have to admit that I'm impressed.
It smells fantastic, and its taste feels full and hearty. I could not quite grasp it on the follow through but found it pleasing overall.

As I Have more of this regional style (now 13), it is a treat to have one from the brewery that best defined and promoted it.
Looks inviting, decent foam "sticks" around. Smell is mostly a sweet malt nose, but I get a few hops lingering in the back.
Taste is pretty much the same, but eventually the high carbonation and dry finish detract a bit for me... but as it warms the finish is less of a negative.
Because of the finish, I probably will not have Sticke again. But I agree with most reviews: very sessionable... particularly as it warms.

Pours a dark brown with voluminous tan head. Lots of sticky toffee aroma, rich caramel malt and sweet bread. Taste wasn't really for me. Their dopplesticke is robust and hearty, but this has a lighter heart that clashes with the foundation. The dark malt doesn't mesh with what seems to be a pale Bavarian yeast strain. It's not a total misfire but a step down from the double.

Pours a murky, ruby-brown color with an off-white head. The aroma is filled with sweet caramel, dark fruit, and toffee. There are hops, but they are somewhat muted by the malt. There is a heavy breadiness in the flavor with plenty of hop bitterness for balance. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, thick texture and a bittersweet finish.

Overall, this is smooth and highly drinkable with layers of flavor and plenty of body; the trademark and beauty of so many classic German beers.

Aroma is really nice. The bottle had a solid pop when it opened and immediately there was a definite aroma of toffee. Head was thick, creamy and fairly long lasting. The rest of the aroma was roast, dark malt. Flavor's only slightly similar to nose as the strong carbonation dominates. Same for body. This would have been so much better, if not for the heavy carbonation. Still, a very good beer. Easy drinking.

Classic altbier from one of the originals. Clear dark brown, dark and smoky, roast grains and nuts. Bitterness comes more from the roast grains than the hops. This is an altbier against which to judge all others.
