Since 2005, Uerige has also been brewing a special strong beer for the American market. Our Doppelsticke has a remarkable 8.5% abv and yet tastes unmistakable: it truly is the yummy droplet!

After the initial herbal aroma of hops, which tends to surprise the palate, there follows a firework of flavor sensations ranging from caramelized sugar, malts, and herbs to rich touches of dark chocolate and rum, only to eventually fade gently and lustrously.

True aficionados tend to simply ignore our recommended minimum shelf life of eight weeks – rather, they swear by storing their Doppelsticke in the cellars for an entire year first.

330 ml bottle, Holy Craft Beer Store, Dussledorf - Pours dark brown with a thin white head which quickly recedes. Aroma - dark stone fruits, roasted malts, caramel. Taste - sweet, dark stone fruits, caramel, roasted malts, crisp bitter finish with a little alcoholic warmth. Nice sipper high ABV alt bier and a little different to the norm.

I had this on draft 2/20/24 @ Laschet's Inn.

Opaque brown/purple appearance.

Big khaki head; decent lacing remained.

Red licorice & booze heat notes in the nose.

Sticky medium thick mouthfeel.

Red licorice & booze heat flavors.

Simple & abrasive; can't say I enjoyed this one.

Picked up a long-neck 0,33l bottle dated best by Okt. '24 for only €2 on the way out of the brewery in Düsseldorf after stopping by for several glasses of their Alt. This is simply labeled "Starkbier" on the back label. And what a strong beer it is. Very unique, with elements of a Dopplebock, a Dunkel, and a Brown Ale. Beautiful amber/brown, clear liquid with a proper head. Extremely aromatic nose, with lots of dark fruits, molasses, charred wood, earth, caramelized sugar. Flavor follows, with lots of sticky sweet roasted malt and a pleasant alcohol presence. Hops actually come through as does some unique carbonation in the body/feel. Makes your mouth water with each sip. Really an incredible, unique, strong sipper. Sadly they didn't have Sticke when I visited but I was very happy to leave with this, especially for that price. The brewery is definitely worth a visit!

330 ml swingtop bottle, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 8.5%. Dark and hazy reddish brown colour, small off-white head, nice lacing. Aroma of malts, caramel, oak, dark dried fruits. Medium sweet flavour with the same elements, but also distinct bittering hops.

Purchased as a single - rather unusually-shaped - bottle from The Blue Door for $7.00. Poured into a nonic pint glass.

L - Clear, deep brown. Topped off with a one-finger tan head, which retains pretty well. Laces well.
S - Molasses, Cavendish tobacco, and toffee. Herbal earth. Stone fruit.
T - Follows nose closely. Deeper notes of brown bread & pecan. Extremely balanced. Finish is dry, and rich with brown bread & toffee notes.
F - Medium-bodied, with decent carbonation. Strong. Pretty easy-to-drink.
O - Solid alt. Strong, but you don't really get any ethanol off of it. Definitely recommend, and I'll probably get it again.

So happy to get to try this at a bottle share in Germany. Poured at warmer than fridge temp. Pours dark brown with off-white head. Good retention. The nose is plum pudding, toffee, herbal spice notes, brown sugar, and tobacco. Taste is walnut, figs, tobacco, leather, and some smoke. Not sweet at all.

Overall, this is just an amazing beer.

11.2oz bottle poured into a snifter
Bottled January 2009

A- pours a murky deep brown color with a razor thin head that disappears quickly, looks like low carbonation

S- initial aroma of caramel, as well as dark fruit notes of raisin and fig. Faded hops give just a trace of spicy noble hop aromas. It closes out with a strong smell of damp basement and cardboard, obvious oxidation

T- initially sweet and malty with dark fruit notes of raisins, figs, prunes and dates, followed by a faded stale hop note that gives a hint of floral and spice trace. The finish is filled with wet cardboard

M- medium body with virtually no carbonation, slick finish

O- I bought this off of the shelf of a bottle shop just a few months ago, assuming it was a style of beer that ages well. Oxidation has certainly taken over, I'd like to try a fresh one but this is the only time I've found this beer

This has probably been my longest wanted beer since joining BA. 10 years in the making since I tried long trail double bag altbier back in 2012. Now 2022 I finally landed my grail altbier. To be fair I didn't really pursue it that hard but finally stumbled across it on a beer haul in southern Michigan while working near toledo. Anyhow...

Look is murky deep brown. Extremely creamy fine frothed head. Oily lacing.

Smell ia magnificent. Absolutely phenomenal. It resembles an American barleywine, or probably more accurately an old ale. It does smell a little stale and I can't find a date but to be fair the aforementioned styles do as well even completely fresh. I smell dark fruits and apricots but not overly sweet. Musty hops ala American barleywine style.

Taste/feel. Well goddamnit I should bave bought more than the 4 I did. I fucking love this. Why is Germany so incredible at beer. The carbonation is like a 2/10 which im not sure if is by design or gone flat. I hate to think its the latter because it works so well here
This beer taste like a nitro. It has a chewy, oily mouthfeel with plenty of substance and body, its just not prickly. I actually find it near perfect.

As it warms more bitterness opens up. The high points of the flavors are somewhat foreign to me and a little hard to nail down descriptors. Caramel malt is absolutely the underlying vessel. As I note that I'm struck by just how much like Boston lager this is. Albeit much oiler, much less prickly, and much stronger... i would say thats the closest comparison I can make. 8.5% Boston lager (except an ale) on nitro.

New money won't like this but if you appreciate reinheitsgebot true beers definitely fuck with this.

11.2 oz bottle split with a friend, poured into a red wine glass. Pours dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma feature deep malt, earthy chocolate, coffee, molasses, and maybe a hint of licorice. There's a lot going on in the dark malt category here and I can't quite put my finger on it. Mouthfeel is rich and full, not too boozy or sweet. Overall it's a unique and intriguing beer, definitely one to sip and savor.

330ml bottle into a Teku. No date visible.

Pour a deep reddish brown with substantial tight, frothy tan head. The nose is very rich with dark malt sweetness, breadiness, toffee, dried fruits, noble hops, and a touch of effervescence. The initial taste has a lot of the dark rich flavors that carry over from the smell, but finishes with fairly pronounced hop spice and champagne dryness. The body full pretty fully and as the names suggests, "sticke" (does not actually translate to sticky). Carbonation is on the light side, but present. Unlike any Altbier I've had. Much more of a sipper to sit back and take your time with.

Yet another style topper acquired in my trip to OEC yesterday, we have the #1 Altbier. I’ve never had an imperial version of an Altbier, so I’m quite excited to see how Doppelsticke will drive up the intensity of the classic style. Let’s pop it open and find out for ourselves

Pours a cloudy light brown with 2 fingers of light tan head that slowly fades to a cap and leaves decent lacing

In the nose this is definitely big and sweet, but it still retains a degree of simplicity I enjoy. I’m picking up on aromas of brown bread, toffee, apple skin, brown sugar, and light herbal hops

It’s even sweeter in taste, almost too a fault but it’s still got some balance. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting sweet raisin, brown bread, honey, toffee, and herbal hops. The swallow brings notes of toast, herbal hops, dates, caramel malt, brown sugar, and light pepper

A medium full body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a rich beer. Finishes neutral with a bit more of a bite than it starts off with

This is a very good Altbier, but I prefer them to be a bit more drinkable. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this quite a bit

This pours a dark walnut color. Its opaque due to the darkness of the beer, but when held to the light that is pretty clear. However there is some sediment in the bottom of the bottle that I allowed to get in the glass causing some cloudiness. There is essentially no head on the beer ... just some spritzy soda like hard, but absolutely no head whatsoever. The aroma has notes of caramelized brown sugar, toffee, smoke, dark bready malts, pumpernickel, prune, raisins, and spicy herbal hop notes.

Taste follows the nose with notes of dark bready malts, prunes, raisins, dates, a touch of smoke, brown sugar, and a syrupy sweetness that gives way to a bitter, spicy hop finish. The hops have notes of tobacco, herbs, spicy black pepper, with a pronounced bitterness on the back end lingering into the finish with this spicy peppery note that just lingers on the palate. Its an incredibly unique flavor and one that I am still working my way through - in particular as it pertains to whether or not I like this beer. The feel is thick, syrupy, heavy, but also super smooth and rich. Very lightly carbonated. Semi-dry finish.

Overall its a decadent and unique beer. I enjoyed this one, but Im not sure I would be likely to pick it up again.
