L: Dark chestnut, amber hints, very dark
S: Sweet malt, mildew, wet bread, if "heavy" had a smell this would be it
T: This "altbier" just tastes old, very malty, hints of dark fruit, kind of tastes like an old wet rag
F: It is smooth, its very heavy and has a much higher gravity than other "Altbiers" I've had before
O: I was looking forward to this beer but the aroma and taste are extremely over powering. Its got a cool bottle and I can appreciate the effort but for me it wasn't good

Incredibly dark tan color -nearly black - with excellent velvety foam head. Lots of mellowed sweet malt flavor with notes of sticky toffee, caramel & fig. Some faint floral, dry hops in the background. treacly & coating mouthfeel at first but thins out considerably, the fruit notes are darker than on the nose, with a burnt raisin pudding flavor and a some distant coffee notes from the roasted malt. Great if you like old ales or very sweet malt heavy beers.

Toasty herbal aroma. Dark fruits, figs, and plums. Very herbaceous. A bit grassy and spicy. Pumpernickel bread. Somewhat minty. Graham cracker and marshmallows interestingly enough. Rich and satisfying.

Pours very dark brown with amber highlights. small light tan head with decent retention. Not much lacing. Low carbonation.

Very rich and pretty sweet. Molasses and toasted bread. Burnt sugar and prunes. Caraway seeds as well. Toffee and milk chocolate. Low hop bitterness but some herbal hop flavor.

Full body and low carbonation. Mouthfilling. Big and sweet. Not what I expect from most German breweries.

Just too much sweetness to be satisfying. Aroma is killer, but a bit of a chore to get through.

Served at cellar temperature from 330ml flip-top bottle into pilsner flute-type glass.

L) Deep reddish-chestnut colour, almost opaque. Thick fluffy 2cm off-white head.

S) Like a typical Alt, nothing huge, but hints of fruity malt for sure and definite alcohol.

T) First is a fair bit of burnt malt bitterness, then a brief and mild alcohol burn. Fruity jam malt is there in the background, but the overall impression is bitterness, with a bit of a nutty aftertaste.

F) Very easy to drink, very mild carbonation. A lot of bitterness in the aftertaste.

O) Surprisingly bitter, not sure I am a big fan of this one, but I am glad to have tried it. Very easy to drink taking into consideration the ABV.

I don't remember having any other "sticke" altbiers, which are basically the top-shelf equivalent of the malty "altbier" of Düsseldorf origin. Uerige's is ostensibly the first historical example, and seems to stand the test of time quite well.

A: Dark ruby/brown color with a finger or two of ecru-ish head that settles to a small ring after about 3-5 minutes. Bubble formation is hefty on the surface. Lacing is nonexistent, which makes sense given the low hopping rate.

S: A lot of fruity esters that recall plum and raisin, alongside grainy notes of brown bread and molasses. Ethanol is slightly present.

T: Alts typically have a very malty, "wort"-y taste, and this is no exception. Lots of raisin bread, dark wheat and estery German yeast character working together to make a strong, malty German ale. Hops balance at the finish with an herbal and earthy character that supports the intense malt backbone.

M: This has a very nice, massaging feel to it initially; pretty low carb after some time in the glass, but it works for the style. Thick and chewy throughout.

O: This is a superb malt-forward strong German brown ale. High gravity is balanced by a hearty bitterness that shows itself but doesn't infringe at all in the malty, bready proceedings. Great stuff.

Gingerbread color -- more cloudy than dark, minimal head. Nose of sherry and raisins. Complex taste, initial taste is prune, dark cherries, and caramel; fairly strong hop follow-up that leaves a lingering residual bitterness on the tongue. Mouth feel - medium body, think I would like a little more carbonation. The stronger ABV comes through in the taste. Overall, a very unique experience.

Dark brown with an off white pillowy head when poured vigorously. Smell isn't powerful but is a pleasant mix of caramel, herbs, and candied raisins. The taste is wonderfully complex, dark caramel, herbal, earthy, dark fruit that almost resembles rum soaked raisins. Body is pretty full and smooth going down, carbonation is noticeable, but light. This was delicious and I wish I drank it slower than I did, I want more...

A: pours a muddy brown, very sudsy 1/2 finger head
S: roasted malts, subtle hints of powdered cocoa, heavy general malt presence, the strongest aroma here is that of a funky dry cheese I could swear it smells just like pecorino Romano (oddly not a bad thing), subtle hints of pine and lemon
T: prominent hoppy bitterness and astringency (though not astringent in a negative sense), dry, roasty, malty, somewhat funky in keeping with the Romano aroma, pine, a lemon aftertaste
M: dry and astringent, full bodied, powdery
O: great, the first wow beer I have had in a long time, quite strange really, not something you would think you could drink often (and you probably shouldn't) but I could drink this frequently, in a word ... Excellent
