Very Good
AltbierAltbier
Notes: Uerige Alt is the most bittered beer in Germany. In spite of this (or just for that reason), this legendary Altbier from Düsseldorf is so full-bodied, aromatic and wholesome.

Our top-fermented specialty has been brewed since 1862 from barley malt, caramel malt, roasted malt, hops, water - and with our very special Uerige yeast.

Our Uerige Alt is regularly chosen among the ten best beers in Germany. It has an alcohol content of 4.7% and a minimum fresh date of eight weeks.

Unser Uerige Alt wird regelmäßig unter die zehn besten Biere Deutschlands gewählt. Es hat einen Alkoholgehalt von 4,7% und ein Mindestfrischedatum von acht Wochen.

The colour is deep, warm brown-copper. The very high head is airy and pale brown with a fine crater. It sinks very slowly leaving massive amounts of thick lacing. The liquid is clear.

The smell is smooth and complex. Butterscotch, caramel, robust bitter hops, brown sugar, rye bread, overripe apples, hay, autumn forest, hay… There are lots of things going on here, but they stick together.

The flavour is bitter. Very bitter for a German beer, it reminds me of some of the best English IPAs in the robust powerful hoppy bitterness. Notes of rye bread, sweet notes of caramel and brown sugar. Dried flowers and hay, sour Porter-like hints. Very fresh flavours. Medium to full body. The aftertaste is bitter with lots of dried flowers and some toffee. Fresh grass, hay, cocoa, fresh herbs and some light spicy flavours. The long finish is malty, bitter and a bit roasted.

The carbonation is mild, yet the small bubbles are very fresh. The liquid is a bit sticky and mid-smooth.

Malty lika a dopplebock, hoppy like an English IPA and complex like a Quadrupel. All at 4.7 % ABV. One of the best beers I have had: This is beer love.

330ml swing top bottle into a pint glass. Appears to have been bottled sometime in June 2021.

Looks fantastic in the glass. Clear reddish amber body. Generous off white head persists in good form throughout, leaving a sheet of lacing.

Aroma is muted. Malty with a little something extra.

On tasting, there is a delightful dry spicy bitterness to this one. Seems well supported by the malt base. Found myself quickly reaching for the next mouthful.

Mouth between medium and full, finish dry spice, possibly pumpernickel?

Overall, very good beer indeed. Wouldn't say no to another. And then another.

Uerige Obergärige Hausbrauerei “Altbier”
€2,40/,25L vom fass at the brewery on 28.09.21

Notes: Clear deep copper. Full head of densely foamy khaki colored foam. Excellent head retention and lacing. Fresh and bright aroma with floral and herbal hops over bready malt. The flavor follows with additional notes of dark caramel, burnt sugar, and spicy hops. Firmly bitter with a very dry, lingering, earthy and spicy finish.

On tap at the GBBF 2008. Dark brown colour, low head. Nice aroma of caramel and butterscotch. "Dusty" flavour, malty with a noticeable hoppy finish. Okay.

Handsome dark red amber with fine-grained foam in the Maredsous goblet. Pleasant sudsy mouthfeel. Slight musty aroma with roast grain in the nose. Malty without any real sweetness. The intriguing flavors are woody, nutty, grainy. The bitter finish makes me think of one of the murkier fresh hop brews.

The flavor grows on you after some sipping. The review by cjgiant citing "tea-like, earthy bitterness" is right on. The long-necked, swing-capped ,narrow bottle is bizarre but lovely. For once the word "unique" is literally true. Purchased at a West Coast beer store.

Slight toffee with noble hop nose, slight esters on pouring. Light but substantial bitterness on tongue, first sip seems like too much, but then it rounds out and is very pleasant. Bitter finish.

Clear chestnut colour, long lived head, good lace. Sweet caramel malts on the nose. Thin-bodied, metallic, quite bitter. Grain, bread and malt to taste, some nuttiness. Interesting range of flavours, just a touch of sweetness.

A: crystal clear; bronze in color; 1 finger finely pored tan head that receded to a very thin collar; no lacing;

S: sweet malt, molasses;

T: toast up front, then a tea-like earthiness through the mildly bitter very dry finish;

M: light to medium bodied; moderate carbonation; dry finish;

O: I love how dry this beer finishes;

Pours a slightly cloudy ruddy brown color. Thin white head dissipates slowly but not completely.

Aroma has notes of dark stone fruits, dark bready malts, some earthy hops.

Taste has notes of dark bready malts, some dark stone fruits, spicy earthy hops, and some lingering bitterness through the finish.

Feel is medium bodied but still quite drinkable. Dry finish.

Overall a lovely alt from Germany. This is clearly quite old, its admittedly a long way off from the best by date, but it was hard to pass on the opportunity to try an Alt from Germany.

One of the most popular Altbier out there, but as person born and raised in Düsseldorfs Oldtown, i have to reduce the rating because of the seasonal differences in taste. In autumn and winter, when the consumption of beer in the streets is decreasing, the quality of the Uerige comes to its peak, and it is really a wonderful Altbier, which, in my opinion, comes very very close to the perfection of the Füchschen Alt. But in spring and summer, when the streets of Düsseldorfs oldtown are crowding, and people lineup in front of the Uerige, the taste of the beer often becomes a little bit thinner than it should be.

But for everyone who loves a really bitter Altbier, this one is the perfect choice!

Amber-rust with moussy white; fresh out of the oven bread - both the crust + the flesh - plus a bit of soap; salted caramel, pretzels, cherry stones, barley sugar sweets + spciy, grassy hops, and a long, numbing herbal bitter end, fizzy + light.

4 4 4.25 4 4.25

Heard a lot about this one. In the event, less complex + livelier but a whole lot more bitter. Echoes of a best bitter are easy to see here. What can I say? I want even more melanoidins, but I like alts, + this is a good one.
