Uerige Alt ist das an Bitterstoffen reichste Bier Deutschlands. Trotzdem (oder gerade darum) ist dieses legendäre Düsseldorfer Altbier so vollmundig, aromatisch und bekömmlich.

Gebraut wird unsere obergärige Spezialität seit 1862 aus Gerstenmalz, Caramelmalz, Röstmalz, Doldenhopfen, Wasser – und mit unserer ganz besonderen Uerige-Hefe.

Unser Uerige Alt wird regelmäßig unter die zehn besten Biere Deutschlands gewählt. Es hat einen Alkoholgehalt von 4,7% und ein Mindestfrischedatum von acht Wochen.

L: Mud. Beautiful mud.
S: Smells of roasted malts, dark spices and bread.
T: Toasty malt, roasted and bready. Spicy yeast. Rich fruit; Sweet, and dry. The bitterness of the hops are strong and also well balanced.
F: Lager like smoothness with biting carbonation, medium-full body
O: Wonderful. Truly wonderful altbier.

This is a classic altbier without a doubt, and one that I highly recommend. It is typically the least preferred of the three, between the classic, sticke, and dopplesticke for alot of people. I would suggest purchasing all three and beginning with the classic.

L: Muddy brown, spongy foamy two finger head. It is dark hue, yet transparent when held against the light.
S: Malty yet earthy, almost like a liquid pumpernickel bread.
T: A slight caramel and candied sugar, yeast quality, and a very nice bitterness quality which allows this brew to stand out. A subtle spice from the malt but exceptional crispness.
F: Light bodied and quaffable. Wonderful.
O: This is an exceptional brew and I highly recommend it. The sticke and dopplesticke are much more meaty and such are not as drinkable. I could drink several of the classic out back by a fire or grilling. Bravo!

Had side-by-side with Uerige's Dopplesticke, the hopping similarities are strong... too strong for me.
The comparison after that is not fair. This bottle of alt was certainly backsliding and losing freshness fast.
But even if this Alt was on the upside of the freshness curve, I would not willing have it again as I rarely like dry-hopping. We also have an ale that is too thin and too dry -- and even too astringent -- in the finish.

Listed on the "1001," I suppose it deserves to be there as the famous style of Dusseldorf and using ale yeast. If there are other alts, it would be a good idea to nominate them to represent the style on the list.

(11,2 oz flip-top, bottled 14.11 code 15.11, 4.5% Alc/Vol - purchased cold - poured into Innis & Gunn fluted goblet)

L: poured with a fairly tall, rocky-spongy stand of old-paper-colored foam... liquid, at first, appears brilliantly clear, albeit somewhat moderately dark - so not see-through - the color of the liquid being a burnt garnet... the head collapses slowly, leaving a messy cap

S: hesitate to say it, but it smells much like a bare-bones, malty English brown ale - dark brown bread crust, perhaps a hint of very dry leather, maybe even a touch of whole nutmeg (or old walnut shell)... not all that sweet in the malt, maybe some remnants of leafy hop, and just about no overt whiff of booze

T: tastes a bit hollow in the middle... nice bit of roast and brown malts clinging to the sides of the palate - husky and grainy, but without much sweetness - perhaps a balanced, bittersweetness may be more accurate... really remarkably dry down the center, toasty flavors all that remain, and perhaps some earthy grass and a mild roasted nuttiness... the addition of the dregs later on did intermingle with the malts, producing marginal cocoa and crackery notes

F: definitely sporting a subtle roundness in body, and a relatively long (though not necessarily viscous) finish... but this altogether quite lean and lithe... the back end, once again, is quite dry at this point - who knows how long this was sitting in the back room

O: never be in a rush to buy!, or at least always read the label thoroughly... didn't notice the date and strength until I got home - being a fan of their doppelsticke, it certainly came as a shock, having dropped two levels of richness from what I've stored in taste memory... I know better, and will now seek a fresher bottle of this, knowing I've not captured this in its full glory

Uerige Altbier is not only iconic, it's arguably the defining example of the style. Curious then, its clear but borderline brownish copper colour is significantly darker than most interpretations made outside of the Altstadt ("old town" Düsseldorf). It's a handsome ale worthy of its unique, slender-neck flip-top bottle.

American brewers put themselves on the map by flexing muscle and showcasing bold, flamboyant flavours. In Germany it's historically been the opposite; producers in Düsseldorf, like their counterparts in München, Köln, and Dortmund, have championed clean, understated, unpretentious beers.

Which is not to suggest they aren't rich or complex - Altbier is highly attenuated yet beyond that crushingly dry finish exist a tiny amount of leftover unfermented sugars that make highly distinctive and delicious flavours. Notes of honeycomb, toffee, and toasted nuts are modest but mouthwatering. And they make for an aroma that is to the nose what a ball of yarn is to a kitten. I could smell this for hours!

Indeed, Uerige Altbier is a beer with hearty supply of malty protein and nutrients - it's all those other compounds created during fermentation (esters, higher alcohols) that are eliminated by an extra long, extra cool maturation period. This ale has a trace of raisin-y fruit but otherwise drinks like a lager.

While Double IPAs, barrel-aged stouts and funky sours continue to get all the attention, truly great styles like Altbier - and iconic brewers like Uerige - have fallen out of fashion with today's average craft beer drinker. It's a shame. Traditional German styles are among the most approachable and made by the world's most accomplished, highly skilled producers. Definitely try this one.

Cooper and hazy with a very small head that sticks around; not much lacing.

Subtle nose - cracker but really smells a bit like apple juice.

The taste, most important of all, is the standout. A subtle spice from the malt but exceptional crispness. It's refreshing and not cloying like a popular American example from Longtrail (Doublebag).

Delicious beer.

Old school alt. Poured with a big frothy head that soon settled. Aroma is malt, toffee, bit of roast. Flavor is bitter and dry with only the barest hint of sweet in the finish. Perfect amount of carbonation, otherwise rather light in body. Super easy drinking;

Really nice intense yeasty/malty flavour. Starts off a bit funky but mellows out into a nice fruity, ale-like drink. Really refreshing and drinkable, even if just a few days past the bbd.

Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a hazy coppery amber with a half finger off-white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, dark dried fruit especially raisins and figs, light nuttiness, inviting. Flavor is dry caramel and toasty bread malt, bitter herbs, rye bread; light grassy hops in the finish. Medium bodied with a light creaminess. A very nice altbier with interesting dry malt flavors and light earthy, grassy hops in the finish. Mellow, but surprisingly full flavored for the ABV. Very enjoyable. There is a dry, biscuity malt flavor in the aftertaste that is very nice with the residual hop bitterness.

Swing top. Coppery color. Poured into a Uerige highball sampler glass; feeling the mood. Pretty beer. Aroma is soft and evokes the essence of beer. No frills. Caramel, bread and some herbal hops. Flavor is very similar to the scent; no surprises. Bare bones and direct. Light bodied. Very drinkable. Not too elaborate but I could destroy 7-9 of these in a sitting.
