The ambience of this place is to be experienced, it has one of the most authentic old German pub feelings that you will ever have in Düsseldorf, although as the beer expert and judge I don’t consider their beer to be top shelf at all, if you want that you probably should go to Schumaker‘s which also has a nice tasting room in a much better beer.

I visited all of the traditional altbier spots Düsseldorf, but Uerige is the most memorable and the only one I'll be reviewing. They're all great stops and if you're in the area, you owe it to yourself to visit the others. Uerige is just the "flagship" for traditional Düsseldorf breweries.
Uerige is located essentially in the heart of the altstadt, just off of the Rhine. While it initially appears to be a standard brewery/pub - it might be the single largest one I've ever seen. Like most, there's a hallway leading to bar and patio seating. However that hallway has a series of large dining and banquet rooms that just keep going and going. The place is cavernous. On top of it, the brewing operations are entirely located in the back and are massive, too. Uerige takes up the entirety of a full city block and even has a patio across the street. It's a sight to behold.
While Uerige is often associated with their sticke and doppelsticke strong altbiers, their bread and butter is a normal dry/hoppy altbier. It's arguably the best of its kind, too. They also have a weizenbier that is quite unique. Instead of a Bavarian yeast, it's using a virtually neutral altbier yeast. The result is a wheat beer more in-line with American pale wheats than the wheat beers a few hours south. Their sticke alt is a seasonal offering however the doppelsticke is oddly for export only. Apparently you can request bottles from the brewery in the back, but it's a crapshoot. To get beers, you can order from the bartender if you want, but a far easier option is just to find a place to sit or stand and wait for a few minutes. A waiter will keep bringing rounds of alt until you either tell him to stop or to bring you something different. Tough to argue with that approach. Don't like alt or wheat...you're probably in the wrong place. Those are the only beer options, so keep in mind that my rating docks a couple points for having a limited selection. That's just the nature of Düsseldorf, so take it any way you want. If selection wasn't a category my rating with probably be closer to 4.5, FYI.
Before visiting Düsseldorf I wasn't 100% sure I was a big altbier fan, but places like Uerige made me a convert.

Not much better in life for a beer drinker than standing in the middle of a big beer hall, listening to drunk Germans sing along with a traveling oompah band, and watching a little cask of delicious alt bier roll past you on the way to being tapped. One of my favorite travel experiences.

Awesome pub/brewery with a beautiful copper brewhouse and giant open fermentors. Really cool interior with lots of rooms sporting unique intricate woodwork and various paintings. If you get a brewery tour you can go to the top floor and check out the coolship overlooking the city and then make your way down to the lagering cellars and they even have a distillery next to the bottling line now. Very traditional brewing and a very good beer that is one of the most bitter you are likely to find in Germany.

My first day in Europe brings a day planned in Dusseldorf. Sure, I may be jetlagged and trying to adjust to the nine hour difference, but my excitement acts as a natural stimulate. All I want is a beer, and somebody in the old part of Dusseldorf will provide. Walk around, get confused about the street layout...I'm closing in on something. It says...Uerige. Woo hoo, objective complete!

History and character all over the place. Old walls and tables, wooden barrels spread around the glass, multiple rooms with different lighting and different numbers of seating. Only a handful of patrons inside as I walked in just after 11am, but by noon, the place was busting. Ok, so how do I order?

All you need to do is sit down and wait for a waiter to automatically bring you a 200 ml glass of the house altbier. Speak some English sir? Yes sir, and we have an English menu. Open the menu, explore the simple and inexpensive dishes. Mmm, bacon and bread sound good with the delicius alt (one that's much better fresh at the source than bought in California). Food comes out quick, but why is my bacon uncooked? This must be how its served. Eat it....I'm making a yummy noise.

I'm ready to change after several rounds of alt, which the waiters continue to bring to your seat automatically until you signal them to stop. Let's try the house weizen, the other beer available at Uerige. The weizen is alright, but the alt is where it's at. €1.90 per 200 ml of alt, and €2.90 per pour (larger size) of the weizen.

A classic altbier establishment which beer lovers should certainaly stop at.

Bring your camera if you visit Uerige, also bring extra money for souveniers for your friends, family and co-workers not fortunate enough to make the trip.

You will not have to wait to be served beer here, period.

You may need to fight for adequate seating if you stop by at a busy time, like most quality places in Duesseldorf. This will be your biggest worry while here.

Anything off the menu is tasty and the beer is fresh and proudly served.

Try to get lost inside the catacombs of this joint and your adventures will truly begin.

I stopped here with two colleagues from the UK during a business trip to Dusseldorf. We were looking to eat there but the place was packed (there was a huge trade show in town). So we settled with a spot outside to drink a few glasses before heading off to another alt pub for dinner.

They serve their own alt bier of course, and it happens to be in my top 2 of the style. It helps that it's widely available in the states, but after trying so many of them at the source I can say that Uerige is slightly hoppier and more flavorful in general (to my tastes).

The brewpub is not as big as Schlusser but still adequate size for a normal evening, it has the look of an authentic old beer hall. Lots of wood, beautiful windows, and prompt service (even outside). Glasses are replaced quickly. We didn't try the food but I saw it and it looks similar to what's available at all the alt pubs (which is fantastic, honestly).

First stop on my alt tour in Dusseldorf.

I wanted to try one alt form the several breweries in Dusseldorf, and we stood outside next to one of the kegs to have one. Two magnificent beers later, we paid our tab and we ventured inside to look at the place. Lots of small rooms and quaint seating. I used the facilities (clean and adequate) and I met up with my friend who had two pieces of pork burgers dropped by a waiter. Just as I was to take my first bite, another waiter came by with more alt. Such beauty.

If I didn't have the agenda to try 3 other places that afternoon, I would have surely stayed there. A must stop if in Western Germany.

For alt drinkers, this is mecca! During a trip to Germany I was lucky enough to visit this wonderful place. Located in the main "aldstadt" area you are confornted with a coner bar with some seating outside.

We choose inside seating and found a canarvous interior. Wood everywhere with large open halls and narrow bar areas abounding. The wait staff consisted of middle aged men that worked quickly. I had heard about slow service from these folks, but did not see it. Our wait staff was quick and spoke some service.

We did not have any food, but the mustard looked wonderful as you would expect from the area.

The beer...sublime! I have never had the chance to drink such a beer before. Having it on draft, served by a proffesional, in a spot that has a lot of history, is more then words can describe.

Must visit!

Visit in 2002:

One of the few reasons to stop in Dusseldorf. A world classic. Has to be on the short list for greatest beer drinking bars in the world. That said; I hope you like fresh from the barrel Alt beer, becasue that is about it. But; here..? Who needs more. Tons of locals of all ages who all seems to smoke. Oh well...when in Rome..Wonderful rambly old rooms and lots of character. Take the time to go; even if it is just for a few. Old Town Dusseldorf has 2-3 other classic places to booze as well.

Amazing place, sat in a smoke-filled room in the back with views of the copper pots. Beer is amazingly fresh as every few minutes someone would take an elevator down and roll in a fresh keg to the bar. Great service with a fresh beer being delivered to your table before you ask and just as you are finished. Was pretty empty when we were there, but on a Friday night the crowd was all around the building and on the opposite side of the street. Clearly a local favorite.

An absolutely awesome place to drink a few alts.

Stopped by here in mid-September while passing through Dusseldorf. Had a few glasses of their alt in the extensive outdoor area that basically covers the sidewalk on either side of the walking street that they are on in the altstadt area.

Outside there are numerous standing tables with a few sitdown ones as well. Inside it is a warren of dimly lit passageways of dark wood that lead to various rooms with tables.

The service we had was very efficient. As soon as you were close to finished the waiter had another one for you.

This is somewhere that you have to stop in at for the experience if you are in the city.

I visited this place on a recent trip to Dusseldorf during the first week in June.

Uerige has by far the largest outdoor cafe area of any of the breweries in the Altstadt (Old Town) area of Dusseldorf. In my humble opinion, this is the best atmosphere for drinking their beer. The selection is limited to Alt bier, as it is in most of the breweries in Altstadt, but that was fine by me. The service is almost too good. The waiters walk around the outdoor areas with trays of beers and they drop off a new beer any time you get below 1/3 of a glass of beer. You have to be pretty aggressive in letting them know that you are done. The food is quite good, but you have to be adventurous. Most of the food is authentic German dishes like pig knuckle and blood sausage.

Yea you could say this place was cool. Very old school German. Lovely copper all over the place. I visted many times in a 3 day period always hard to say whether to sit in or out, because both are cool.

If you like Alt beer, and I do, this place is it. To me Uerige is the standard for all Alts. As fresh as it gets.

Servers are cool and quick.

Well the selection by American standards is poor, only two beers while I was there, but both are great.

Food was great. Very goos sausage and cheese.

The place is very reasonable.

A favorite of mine, almost made a quick trip from Amsterdam just to go here.

My wife and I stopped here on our recent European trip. We plopped down at an outdoor table. Both sides of the street were lined with Uerige tables and awnings. Folks were settling in and enjoying the beer during the early evening. Most of the people are our age (mid-30's) or older - good to see traditions are strong. The waiters walk around with full trays of altbier looking for who needs another (1/4 liter glasses). We had some good cheese with bread, which is really the most you can expect food-wise here - it's not a place for dinner. For obvious reasons, they serve altbier here and that's just about it. Come for the altbier, which is outstanding - perhaps the best in Dusseldorf - but eat somewhere else. Regardless, this is must for beer lovers stopping in Dusseldorf. We had a great time (and tastes) here.

Zum Ueriges is one of the must go to's for all altbier lovers.

It is a lovely looking oldtime brewpub on the corner of Bergstraße. I visited in summer and night and day, there was outside seating running down the side of the pub and every table was always full - a real bustling atmosphere. .Across the street are beer garden style tables and benches so you can drink under the shade of the trees which was welcome in the hot summer weather.

Going inside the pub, the drinking space is divided into small rooms and alcoves with wooden tables and dark wooden furniture,The decor very traditional with pictures of old time dusseldorf. Sometimes you had to look quite hard for a table but room could always be found. I found the locals quite happy to share a table and chat with you and dusseldorf and their famous bier and what you thought of it.

Once you get a seat, the blue apron clad Kobes (waiters) are patroling their designated rooms, with trays of delicious alt. You just have to grab their attention and ask for a beer, they mark your coaster to tally how many beers you have had each time you ask for another, then settle up at the end.

The waiters are interesting to watch as they walk around with their trays, or loading up new casks from the cellars. They are entertainment in themselves

Uerige only sells 2 types of bier - the alt or the weizen, there are the seasonal specials such as the sticke and doppelsticke. Only offered on the third Tuesday in January and October - a treat to savour.

As far as food goes - its very traditional, i only sampled the bar snacks leberwurst and a crusty roll, and gouda cheese. The leberwurst is recommended as a pairing with the alt. Specialties include a knuckle of pork and a special pea soup.

Overall Ueriges is a real treat for alt lovers. The traditional atmosphere, good food and good bier make this a place to remember and the friendly locals make it a place to hold special in your heart. You will always want to come back.

Longstaff seems to have this place down pat, it was exactly like the way he described it when I visited. First off, make sure to have a map of the city. We didn't at first, and ended up walking a good mile or so to get there. Second, better brush up on your German, because not many people speak anything else. The best English I got was shoty at best, and it was from the tourist office. And the directions she gave me sucked! But I did manage to find it. Even though it's allegedly on Bergerstrasse, it's on the opposite corner where the street starts near the waterfront. Look for the Bell in front of the door. Inside, multiple little rooms with picnic tables. We went in the back room, with the barrel tables that had a more "Beer-hall" atmosphere. You can see the copper kettle through the window. An old elevator opens up, and a guy comes out rolling a wooden keg to the front room where another guy taps it the old fashioned way, with a wooden tap. Wow.

Even though the website suggests 3 Beers are usually on tap, only the regular Uerige was available the day I was there. Great stuff, I loved it a lot. Glasses were under 2 euros each, so I was glad to buy a few rounds to my family who humored me through the 6 hour plane ride, 2 hour car ride and 2 hour walk to get there. Save your change, because you'll need it for the piss-maiden. She doesn't seem to clean up after you, she just sits there and collects. As a Canadian, this was totally new to me, so the first time I tipped 1 euro, believe me she was glad to see me back the second time (the average people give is 0.25 euro). Tipping the waiter seems to be an abstract concept here as well. When I first offered him the tip he didn't seem to want it, but when I insisted he gladly accepted it and muttered out his best impression of "merci" about a dozen times. He deserved the tip, because even with the language barrier, service was super fast and efficient, very German-like in fact.

I highly recommend a visit if you're in the area. It certainly didn't have the tacky fakeness most other bars in the area had. This place was the real deal.

Somewhat hard to find in Dusseldorf since it is on a different street from the other alt bars in the old city. Even some locals didn't know where it was - an Irish guy pointed me in the right direction though. As you walk in, there a seperate rooms, no bar to speak of except the area where they had a couple of wooden kegs on a raised platform while someone just filled glass after glass of altbier while waiters grabbed what they needed. We walked into the backroom where the floor was concrete and tables were made of old kegs. There was a fiberglass statue of an old man ejoying a beer and sitting on one of the benches. Once in a while they rolled a new keg from the backroom to the serving area. The beer glasses were small cylinders that held about .25 liters. They kept track of how many beers you had on the beer coaster and just kept bringing more until you said stop. Pretty cool.
