We aged a limited quantity of our award winning (Brewer’s Association of Maryland Governor’s Cup gold medal winner in 2006, 2007 and 2008) Barleywine, Devil’s Milk, in Kentucky White Oak Bourbon barrels to create a uniquely tempting new brew. Hell On Wood is medium/full-bodied and amber in color with a thin, persistent, off-white head. Its mesmerizing citrus flavors and aromas, accented by notes of charred oak, vanilla, and caramelized sugar, give way to a palate dominating hop finish balanced by smoky, bourbon character and a warming alcohol presence (10.6% alcohol by volume). There’s no escape; prepare to fall to the seductive power of Hell On Wood!

2 year old 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. The brew appears a clear copper color with tan cap a finger strong that fades to nothing quickly leaving stringy lace.

Aroma is solvent with alcohol and wood shavings. A little medicinal across the back. As it warms up, it has a bit of fruity character and the wood takes on almost a spicy cedar aspect.

Taste is herbal and boozy with a solvent feel, neutral woodiness and mild caramel accent. The overall feel here is a bit medicinal.

This is medium bodied and modestly carbonated. An ok brew that ive been avoiding drinking for 2 years because I expected it to be bad and it ended up not being bad at all. Mediocre but not bad.

Bottle on 1/15/2015. The appearance is a beautifully clear dark amber body with a thick light tan head that eventually recedes to a patchy ring of off white bubbles, and leaves huge alcohol legs along the glass. The aroma has definitely rounded out with a year in the bottle. Lots of caramel candy, toffee, molasses, oak, dark fruits, vanilla, and some spice I can't put my finger on. The mouth feel is full, very sweet. In the flavor I get heavy caramel and toffee sweetness, brown sugar, stale tobacco, leather, barrel character (oak, bourbon, char, and vanilla), with some dark fruits. Enjoyed this one much more than the base beer.

Pours hazy, orange-brown in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is citrus hops, orange,toffee, sandalwood, light vanilla, and alcohol. Slick, heavy bodied. Hops add a dryness to the beer. Slight bitterness letting you know this is an American barleywine. Tasty, not overly complex, but glad I got a six. Will look for this again.

12 oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter.
Pours with a murky copper-brown body topped by a thin, mostly short-lived head. Minimal lacing.

Powerful bourbon and bourbon barrel aspects to the aroma and only a little less pronounced and dominant in the flavor. Still, there's a strong barleywine base that is clearly evident in the flavor. There are vanilla, wood, dark soft and dried fruits, hops and, of course, bourbon, notes in the flavor. Good complexity.

Overall: Boozy, with a clear presence of the 10+% ABV. A strong ale for bourbon lovers.

Pours dark ruby red with barely a head to it.

Smells sweet. Candied fruits, malty goodness. Burnt sugar. Touch of booze. Smells very enticingly sweet.

Taste is sweet, yet not as sweet as the smell though. Some sugary fruit and alcohol. Lots of bourbon flavor. Really good. Mostly on the back end but so nice.

Smooth and thin with almost no carbonation. Bit of a warmth in the aftertaste.

This is a very good barleywine. Top of the line in my opinion. Definitely getting a lot of the bourbon barrel character. Really like this.

12 oz bottle, 2013 edition, poured into a goblet

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, deep, dark, amber color, speckled with orange and red highlights, and an eighth of a finger of white-colored head that quickly dissolved away into an extremely thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass.

Aroma: Delicious! Lots of bready toasted malt and candied sugar as well as aromas of bourbon, oak, a touch of clove and vanilla. There’s quite a bit of dried stone fruit as well, such as raisins, prunes and apricots.

Taste: Delicious! Tons of toasted malt and candied sugar and boozy alcohol up front, not clashing, but complementing each other, followed by quite a bit of dried stone fruit as well, such as raisins, prunes and dates, hints of oak clove, caramel, toffee and vanilla. Finally, more bourbon comes through at the finish. Absolutely delicious!

Mouthfeel: Slightly chewy, and extremely smooth as there is no carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 10.6%, there is a very pleasant alcohol warmth on the palate.

Overall: This is an excellent barley wine!! I really like the pronounced malty presence, mixed with dried stone fruit, toffee and boozy alcohol. I’m definitely getting some more of this!!

Notes via stream of consciousness: Nice label. Barleywine aged in Bourbon barrels? Sounds pretty good. Nice pour. Clear ruby-accented deep mahogany brown beneath a pillowy head of off-white. Aroma of coconut, wood, Bourbon, brown sugar, and dark bread. The head seems to be holding up well. Flavors mimic the aroma with some added chocolate fudge, burnt sugar, and light vanilla. Unfortunately the alcohol is right out there. How strong is it? Just 13.1% ABV? There's something wrong then, it shouldn't be this hot. Ahh, I just got some fruitiness from it as well, something like mango and apple - just the right amount. It's got a median bitterness, but that's not really needed as the alcohol takes care of that - bummer, it really hurts it overall, it's very distracting. But, I'll also say this, I don't feel the barleywine base itself is enough to support the Bourbon barrel aging. It might work by itself but I don't feel it's rich or malty enough to support the additional notes from the barrel. I don't think it was a good candidate, or was it? Did the barrel aging take a mediocre beer and 'improve' it? Medium to medium-full in body with a soft and smooth moderate carbonation. Disappointing overall.

Murky tea brown in color with off white head that falls quickly, tons of legs on the glass. Toffee, vanilla, light fig, raisin, oak, and boozy whiskey in the aroma. Same on the palate with the addition of a solid dose of bitterness and floral, spicy hops. Finishes sweet, bitter, and slightly warming. Just a really solid barleywine where the barrel makes its presence known.
