Guilty Filthy Soul Imperial Chocolate Rye Porter, a sliver medalist at both The World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival, is medium-full bodied with rich aromas and flavors of roasted malt and cocoa accented by underlying notes of peppery rye, and a strong 7.7% abv. The addition of chocolate to the beer imbues it with inimitable flavor, a velvety mouthfeel, and a crisp, bittersweet finish. 12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice thick soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, spicy rye, fudge, brownie batter, toasted dark/brown bread, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, herbal, pepper, pine, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready/rye malt, chocolate, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, spicy rye, fudge, brownie batter, toasted dark/brown bread, and nuttiness; with lighter notes of smoke, charcoal, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, herbal, pepper, pine, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/piney hop, roast/char bitterness; and peppery rye spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, spicy rye, fudge, brownie batter, toasted dark/brown bread, nuttiness, smoke, charcoal, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, herbal, pepper, pine, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready/rye malt, chocolate, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a nice roast/hop bitter/sweet balance; and minimal acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/silky, and sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 7.7%. Overall this is an awesome imperial chocolate American porter. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready/rye malt, chocolate, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV; even with the increasingly bitter/drying finish. Very rich and well rounded malt complexity, with great chocolate presence, and balancing earthy hops. Kind of a dessert beer in a way, but the drying char bitter/spicy rye finish keeps it feeling like an American porter on style. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is strong of chocolate, some licorice. Taste is chocolate, roasted malts, some rye, a touch of alcohol as it warms. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a beer worth seeking out.

on draft in pint glass. not a lot of aroma but very black color w darker than expected tan head that dissipated quickly. Lots of cocoa and milk choc in back of mouth. i like it but that could be a deal breaker for the uninformed
