Very Good
Devil's MilkDevil's Milk
Notes: Our award winning barleywine will seduce you with its assertive hop bill (that changes each year to make each vintage unique), citrus flavors, and warming 10% ABV. Devil’s Milk is best served in a snifter to accommodate its ABV and allow complex flavors to emerge as it warms in your hands.

UPDATE: 04-Jan-20:
I rarely update reviews, but every so often I find I need to tweak one or another. This is the case with this DuClaw offering. This version - out of a can - had spectacular lacing down the glass - the entire glass. And the mouthfeel was full-bodied and even creamy. The rest of thew brew is pretty much the same, but those two aspects made me bump up the overall a quarter point. Nice job from Duclaw...

DuClaw is one of those brewers I keep an eye out for, and this offering was high on my watch-out-for list...

A mixed review for me on this one from DuClaw. On the one hand it looked great with the hazy, copperish colored brew; I paid no big heed to the weak head or the non-existent lacing. The smell was deliciously boozy, with hints of orange to my nose. The rest of it, though not as special, was still very, very solid - Mouthfeel was full-bodied, quite carbonated, but still smooth on the tongue. The taste reminded me of those "blood orange" brews and less than a Barleywine, but I still liked it enough. Overall, I find this good, solid beer. Not my favorite from DuClaw, but definitely one to have on hand to share with folks who haven't "run with the devil" just yet...

The beer comes in a rich orange color.

The aroma bursts of orange, fruity hop character, with a touch of dank and lots of sweetness.

The flavor follows with that Centennial quality up front of sweet orange marmalade. The sweetness in the front falls off quite well onto a Simcoe character of dank pine and green flavors. A really well balanced brew that does not taste like its ABV.

In general, I would categorize this as a really well made triple IPA.

Late '06 bottle. I pulled this out of the cellar to share at a tasting my wife and I recently hosted. Poured from 32oz. fliptop into nonic taster glasses. Beer was a dark copper color with a small, creamy, tan head. Moderate lacing around the glass.

Aroma was caramel, toffee and raisins. Very sweet with malt and lightly hoppy.

Taste was sweet and creamy with caramel and a surprisingly fair amount of hops still present. Nuts and grain flavors present.

Very thick and chewy mouthfeel.

A very nice sipper that everyone enjoyed. Still have another bottle in the cellar. This one has held up well.

Poured a bright clear orange/amber color with a big slightly off-white head, good retention and thick lacing. A good looking beer.

Smell is a real drop-off. For a style that usually includes a strong aroma or caramel malt and hoppiness, this beer offers up a mild bready malt aroma. Thats it!!

Flavor is somewhat more robust. There is some caramel malt, bready malt and a mild hoppiness. I also detected some oak.

Mouthfeel is fairly rich and crisp. The bitterness and oak add to the overall mouthfeel.

A fairly good barleywine but nothing close to the top ones I have tried.

22 bottle from the fantastic trader Baltimorebeerguy... Josh, I truly appreciate it.. I think the Idol of our trade may be enjoyed soon.

Pours deeeep orange... clear... nice sticky tan head.

Nose shows good American C hops that get hit hard by sweet caramel malts.. a tad hot with some fruity esters with warmth.

Flavor begins with a good bitter hop bite.. piney hops show later.. so do bits and pieces of tangerine zest.. toasty elements meld well with the caramel malt and some raisin and dark cherry...

Reminds me alot of a fresh '05 Old Boardhead.. I don't see this being "great/good" for a year or so, but right now, alot of American qualities are coming out swinging with just enough malts to hang in there.

Nice... surprising... I want some bottles.... hit me up.. no kidding.

Thanks Josh.. The original trade was fantastic.. but the other stuff puts you in the "epic" category.

A= brandy-colored, poured in 3 snifter glasses, the first one had a very modest head, the others had almost none but all 3 had some enduring lacing.

S= up-front honey caramel and zesty hops florals.

T= lightly fruity, caramel dry malts, solid hops bitterness (ie Cascade or similar) but in balance.

M= slight syrupy taste and feeling on the back of my tongue, dryness and light astringency on the palate, front of tongue and even on my lips.

D= very drinkable if you enjoy this interesting style.

2006 vintage 1 L. bottle thanks to akorsak and shared with him, brewslut, ksak and ffejherb.

A-Deep red-orange copper with a thin light tan head that lasts and leaves spotty lace.

S-Big and bold caramel malt and brown sugar dominate. A twang of earthy/spicy hops play in the background.

T-Big and robust with forefront malts. Heavy doses of caramel amd brown sugar with some minor notes of dark fruit skins and a spicy hops.

M-Heavy bodied with a thick, syrupy feel. Long lasting flavours.

D-Without question a different beer with 2 years on it than when it is fresh. While I prefer the fresh version with it's stand out hop blast I did enjoy this now caramel/brown sugar malt bomb. A nice sipper and a good one to share with friends.

Poured out from a bomber. Deep, thick brown/amber. Bubbles rise slowly. Not much of a head, but a lasting mat of bubbles settle on top.
Nose is cloyingly sweet - sugar candy and slight alcohol. Molasses and malts. Complex and nice.
Taste is sweet barleywine, heavy malts, balanced nicely with sweet sugars, floral notes, and alcohol on the end.
Good mouthfeel.
Nice barleywine.

From a growler - pours a amber/copper color with a small mostly white head. Smells gloriously hoppy. First sip is all hops backed with a ton of malts. Carbonation is low most likely from being in a growler. The ABV is not hidden, it is in your face. Very well balanced for the style. Tasty and clean this beer is getting better as it warms.
