Reviewed from notes.

Pours a very dark brown with a tan head that recedes fairly quickly. The nose is roasted malt, dark fruits, sweet malt, and a bit of smoke. Taste brings light smoke and some dark malt. A bit of dark fruit. Fairly hefty body with a bit of alcohol. Drinkability i okay, but it's fairly run of the mill.

This one was on seasonal yesterday at the pub in hanover, md. It poured an amber red. Had a little haze. The head was again not really there. At least it didn't last. The smell was interesting malty with a lot of smokiness. The taste again was very malty with a strong smoke flavor. Not as much as a rauch but very detectable with a little hops at the end. It was also a little thick for my liking. Didn't go down as smooth as I had hoped. Good but just not for me!

A lite bodied beer with a pleasant taste. Was like a reddish color. A little like wood and caramel with a hop finish. Has a sort of fruity flavor like grapes or cherry that is sort of buried in there. Mouth feel was lite, sort of bubbly. Not hard to down, though a bit harder then one would expect given the taste.

A--Dark amber copper with a thin white head that fades, decent lacing.

S--Another DuClaws brew that smells better than it tastes. Fruity dark malt with hints of smoke...really interesting

T--Toffee and caramel with a backround hint of smoke. Quickly disapates and leaves you wanting more in the aftertaste.

M--A bit thin and light in the mouth. I was hoping for something a bit more robust.

D--Other than the smokiness a thin pedestrain version, unimpressive.

On tap at the Fells Point location Saturday 9/29 with the LCB Baltimore pub crawl.
I sampled several other beers that were not very awe-inspiring. This was the one I picked for a pint and did enjoy it, as a decent tasty beer but not very big or bold or intense for a Scotch Wee Heavy.

Appearance: Served a dark amber copper with an ivory head that fades to a cap and a ring around the collar, nice lacing.

Smell: It has a dark fruit malty aroma with hints of smoke and light hop presence. Nice.

Taste: Soft juicy malt flavor, toffee and caramel and apple. light hop prickles. A bit of alcohol shows through. I would have liked more bourbon notes with the alcohol.

Mouthfeel: Decent malty body. Medium feel in the mouth but too light for the style.

Drinkability: This is a mainstreamed version, approachable yes but impressive, not really.

Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!

Had a pint of this beer at the Fells Point location the other day.

The beer pours a darkish orange amber color with decent head retention and moderate lacing. I don't get much on the nose, just some sweet malt. On the palate this beer is pretty malty, and at least to my not very discerning palate, tastes much like an above average amber ale. The beer is fairly sweet with a hint of butterscotch, also with sweet cherry and apple. The beer has a light to medium bodied mouthfeel, with abv. pretty well disguised.

This is a decent enough beer, but probably not one I would seek out. Simple, straightforward flavors...

On tap at the Fells Point location.

Appearance: clear dark copper in color with a short one finger head that last a while. Nice lacing developed during the session.

Smell: caramel candy and malt sweetness is up front and there is a bit of earthiness in the background.

Taste: bold grainy malt level that has a bit of an earthy tone. A barely noticeable hint of smokiness is there along with some caramel and mild bitterness. Alcohol is not noticeable and is well hidden.

Mouthfeel: smooth from start to finish. Long aftertaste as the malt sweetness hangs around the mouth a while. Medium-heavy in body.

Drinkability: very enjoyable and easy to quaff beer. This will sneak up on you after a while. Must have if on tap.

A: The ale is a deeper brown color, slightly opaque, with a finger's worth of white head that slowly dissipates.

S: The aroma is a combination of sweet malts and a bit of smokiness.

T: The ale has a big malt flavor, not so far as to be a malt bomb, but strong nonetheless. The malts don't really take on any one flavor, instead their bigness forces a very chewy component that is a little too much. The smokiness is a redeeming quality, as it provides a bit of taste to break up the monotony of the malt.

M: The mouthfeel is not so great, the malts are too big and unfocused to do anything bold.

D: I felt that this ale did not age well (see earlier review). Unfortunately I find that, when served fresh, it still isn't so hot.

This is the 2006 Twisted Kilt, brought home a growler from the 2nd release night at Bowie. It pour with remarkably little head and was dark amber to brown, about the color of coke.

In the nose, some sweetness, some yeasiness, a little toasted bread, and a hint of alcohol. The taste was not sweet, not bitter, an easy malty bev with balance and a little body. I need more practice at picking out the malt flavors, I couldn't pin this down. There was a pleasant tang of carbonation, but overall it was a pretty muted flavor (at least for me, an unrepentent hophead).

This stuff has medium to good drinkability, but it's not my preferred style. The good balance does conceal the alcohol well, but for me this brew lacks the zip (hops) that I look for. Still, a decent offering, and I'm sure I will enjoy the rest of the growler.

On tap at the BelAir location

Pours dark a rich ruby-reddish color. Has a cream colored head that fades.

Smells rich and sweet and malty. Makes me thirtsy to smell it.

Nice and bold and malty sweet up front with a fruity sweetness that follows. Some nice hints of caramel and chocolate. Maybe just a little too sweet.

Nice, full body. Rich and meaty - which completely backs up the big flavor.

A nice Scotch ale, but just a little too sweet to drink too many at once. Although, I would like to drink it again.

Sampled on tap last night at the Fells Point location. The last bits of the 2005 version still on tap. Everyone else was pounding Bare Ass Blonde, so I had this beauty all to myself.
Poured a dark brown with red highlights. Tan head about a quarter inch thick gave way to a wispy, clingy ring.
Great aroma...Smoky caramel
Ripe fruits, a bit of smoke in the background, and chocolate/caramel malts. A very good drinkin brew.
Medium bodied, with a thick sweetness that stays on the tongue. Comes off being very drinkable, and went well with some chocolate cake.

Growler from the Bel Air location. Dark brownish red in color with a quick rising tall tan head. Moderate lacing and retention. Aroma was smoky and some earthy notes. Dark ripe fruit notes and some caramel to balance it out. A touch of chocolate and roasty malt as well. Very nice. Sweet ripe fruits upfront on the flavor with a nice earthy smokiness coming on strong towards the back. Light notes of chocolate and caramel were present as well. Nice smooth and creamy mouthfeel with plenty of body to support it. Really drinkable stuff. This growler went easily and I will be getting some more of this before its gone.
