Hop Continuum No. 1 - Blood Orange Gypsy IPAHop Continuum No. 1 - Blood Orange Gypsy IPA
Notes: The first foray into our Hop Continuum Series, our flagship IPA infused with blood orange juice, proved so popular that it transcended the series to stand on its own outside as a worthy companion to the original Neon Gypsy. Notes of grapefruit, citrus, and pine from a blend of seven hops balances the tart sweetness of blood orange juice for a flavor profile that roams your palate long after the beer’s bittersweet finish.

A: A dark orange, blood orange I should say, a good amount of off white head at the top and left a little bit of lacing around the glass as you drank this one.

S: Ton of blood orange on the nose, super sweet notes coming through, some biscuit notes as well.

T: The taste at first is nothing but blood orange, kind of taste like an orange creamsicle, super hoppy and good bitterness as well.

M: Medium bodied, good amount of carbonation, not to sticky.

O: I would say this is not a bad beer, but the blood orange I think was a little to much for me, now being a citrus fan you would think I would have enjoyed this, but the blood orange I feel was a little over the top. A well balanced beer, just think a little less blood orange would have made this brew fantastic.

12 oz bottle into a teku.

Appearance: Pours a chill-hazed amber color. The head is a finger high, and white in shade. While a very creamy looking head, it doesn't have amazing retention. Some lacing is left on the glass, too. (3.5)

Smell: I was half expecting the blood orange to stay in the background, behind a wall of generic DuClaw IPA mediocrity. Nope - this is a blood orange bomb. It has the right amount of hoppiness hidden behind the fruit to balance its sweetness, too. I'm impressed how vivid and natural these fruit notes come across - as far as I'm concerned, (aromatically) it's the best fruit beer/IPA merger I've come across yet. (4)

Taste: There are tons of blood orange notes at first. I mean, wow. Then some of the hops come through - Mosaic shines, mainly. Berries around the middle transforms into a semi-malty finish, laden with additional onion-y Mosaic notes. I should come out and say it, I don't like Mosaic one bit: to me, it tastes like straight-up onion. Still, everything else about this brew is successful. It's fruity, juicy, decently balanced, and fairly quaffable. (3.75)

Mouthfeel: Fairly heavy, and sweet from both malts and orange. It does feel creamy on the tongue, though. Carbonation is decent yet gentle enough. (3.75)

Overall: While I personally have a problem with the Mosaic hops in this one, I shouldn't knock this one objectively - it's a great hybrid of a fruit beer and IPA. It's also DuClaw's best effort with an IPA to date. But, because it's loaded with Mosaic, I won't be buying this again. I'll still recommend this one to others. (3.75)

3.8/5: Nice mix of hops, malt, and blood orange

Bottle > Pint Glass

A - Clear gold with a nice finger of dense soapy head, little lacing.
S - Loads of fresh blood orange, grapefruit, papaya, white grape, tangerine, and a slight hint of some fruit cocktail, grains, slightly artificial, but enticing.
T - The blood orange in this is very prominent and its delicious, there's also plenty of grapefruit flavor as well. Very light pale malt, and a lot of bitterness goin on.
M - Lingering bitterness and a medium feel, not bad.
O - My biggest problem with this is the aroma smells very "processed" if you will, but that being said...this for sure is the best thing DuClaw has done in the IPA realm yet. I hope this hop continuum is a sign of good things to come.

12 oz. bottle poured into a MD snifter (bottled on 1/19/15)

A: Golden copper with nice bit of lacing and a collar.
S: Fruity with a bit of alcoholic fumes that go well with the hops here. Tons of blood orange.
T: Deliciously hoppy and lots of fruit in there. Seriously, it's like someone poured some Blood Orange juice into this. This is all kinds of fresh and juicy.
M: Lots of carbonation. Nice bit of rough foam.
O: This is probably the freshest DuClaw beer that I've had and possibly the freshest regular beer. Quite good and excited to see where they go with this series.
