You never know with these collaborations - sometimes hit, sometimes miss...this one is pretty much a hit...As far as this being "retired", I'm not sure as I picked this up recently in 2017...(didn't taste like a 'shelf-turd' to me...)

Beautifully black liquid with a thick tan foam but no lacing to really mention. The foam has only a small bit of staying power at that. The smell was by far the best aspect of this brew - strong coffee scent, strong roasted malts, and even some chocolaty notes, superb, really. Mouthfeel was light-bodied and a tad watery, but not necessarily distracting from the overall experience. I enjoyed the taste of strong coffee and the roasted malts, even took note of some caramel in my opinon. Overall, this is very good, truly enjoyed this collaboration and was so glad I picked it up.

Poured into a short 10 whisky glass, bottled on 9/18/17. Pours near black with a 2 finger tan head that leaves some thin wisps of lace behind.

Smell is dry coffee grounds, cocoa nibs, vanilla bean, and hints of toffee.

Taste follows one dimensional in the best way possible, really tasty.

Mouthfeel is a little bigger than medium, mild carbonation, maybe a little dry, and excellent drinkability.

Overall this stuff is just very very tasty and the price was right.

GROSS!!! It is very thin for a Stout. It smelled and tasted like it was run through a barrel of used coffee grounds. Poured into a tulip glass the head is maybe 1 finger and dissipates quickly without much lacing at all. I'm a HUGE fan of coffee stouts and have tried many. This is by far the worst Ive ever had.

Traditional optics. Nice robust coffee aroma which sadly doesn't translate so much to the tongue. It is there along with your normal stout flavors but there is a bit of a strong fusel taste underneath which holds this back.

12 ounce bottle into a Belgian snifter. No bottle dating.
Pours dark brown/black in color and is nearly opaque in the glass. The minimal head is short-live and only leaves a few small spots of lacing.

Aroma: black bread, toast and fine, roasted coffee with hints of dark chocolate, toffee and roasted nuts. Exceptional.

Flavor: the great balance in the nose carries over to the taste. The coffee has very good flavor and mixes in balance with the malts. Hints of chocolate, cocoa nibs, roasted nuts, toffee, white pepper and fainter dark fruits. Mild bitterness and high complexity.

Overall: an outstanding coffee stout with the balance, complexity and fine coffee among its strong points.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty coffee, caramel, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, light dark fruit, herbal, light pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty coffee, caramel, toffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, light dark fruit, herbal, light pepper, and roast/toasted earthiness. Moderate herbal/spicy hop and roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty coffee, caramel, toffee, toasted dark bread, smoke, char, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a great roast/hop bittern/sweet balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from hop/roast bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready, and fairly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 6.9%. Overall this is an outstanding coffee stout! All around awesome dark/roast/bready malt, coffee, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to drink. Huge on the coffee presence, with an awesome and complex base stout to back it up. A highly enjoyable offering.

Poured into a Wicked Weed snifter. No freshness date.

A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a 1/2 inch dark tan head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a cobweb pattern of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves small clots behind.

S- Mocha aroma gives off notes of brown sugar, caramel and nuts.

T- Big roast at first which is soon smoothed out by a vanilla/chocolate sweetness. Coffee is well integrated into the flavor profile and is good quality. Slight metallic finish but the sweetness helps cover it up.

M- A bit creamy with medium carbonation and a full body.

O- Pretty damn good for a beer with the DuClaw name on it. Not something I would seek out regularly but I'm glad I picked up a single.

Pours a deep ebony color with a tight, tan head that leaves little chunks of lacing.

Smells of coffee notes and deep roasted malt.

Tastes of the deep malts with coffee and some earthy bitterness. Malts lead off with notes of molasses, coffee, and burnt caramel. This gives way to some slightly acrid roasted notes and bitterness. Earthy bitterness comes next before a lingering coffee note.

Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a nicely done stout that features the coffee well.

865cc Coffee Stout brewed byDuClaw Brewing Company, with an ABV of 6.90% This brew pours out a deep brown color with a nice off white head. There is also some nice lacing to this American Stout, it sticks to the side real nice. This brew look like coffee, not saying that is a bad thing. The smell is rich with coffee flavors, and roasted grians and malts. You also pick up on some nice hops in the smell of this brew. The look and smell of this stout is really inviting. 865cc Coffee Stout has the look and smell of most coffee stout on the market. Now for the taste, it is bold with coffee flavors, and roasted grians and malts. There is also a nice rich sweetness to the taste of this brew. There is some nice earthly hops on a ending note of this brew. There is a lot going on in 865cc Coffee Stout. I really like how smooth this brew goes down, it is hard to pick up on the 6.90% ABV in this stout. It is just that smooth.
865cc Coffee Stout has a super nice balance to it, there is nothing overpowering about this brew, it just goes down smooth. The mouth feel of 865cc Coffee Stout is Coffee, Bold, Rich, Clean and Refreshing. Overall I'm giving 865cc Coffee Stout a 4.75 out of 5. I would definitely buy this brew again. If you like coffee brews look this brew up. DuClaw Brewing Company, did a real nice job with this brew.

This is the best DuClaw beer I've had. The coffee flavor is very strong but in a good way. The carbonation is a little bit on the prickly side but not overly so.

This is a collaboration with Cafe Racer XXX. Bottled in October 2016. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours black with a fluffy tan head that fades leaving nice retention and nice lacing. The aromas are very nice. The coffee shines and leads the way. Roasted malts are there with some subtle hints of vanilla. The flavors follow the nose. The coffee shines once again. The coffee gives this one a nice roastiness and solid bitterness. Hints of dark chocolate in the finish. Malts do their thing. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is on the fuller side of light-bodied with active carbonation. It's very fluffy, smooth and easy to drink.

This one is a winner. It's a great coffee stout. Definitely worth checking out.

865cc Coffee Stout: Cafe Racer XXX Collaboration | DuClaw Brewing Company. Poured from the bottle into a snifter, this beer has a two finger thick khaki head, with secular lacing, and an inky black body.

I smell a very, very well crafted blend of the addition of the coffee with traditional stout qualities.

Tastes like a damn smooth version of what I've explained about the scent, along with some milk chocolate notes. Really can't pick up on any of the alcohol.

The mouthfeel here is not too heavy, but more than just medium with mild carbonation.

Overall, I'll choose to give 865cc Coffee Stout: Cafe Racer XXX Collaboration | DuClaw Brewing Company a rating of a 4.5. Not the most "complex" stout on the market, but this is a rather well-represented example of a finely made coffee stout.

Bottle into a tulip sniffer.

A. Pours pitch black with a very thin layer of dark brown head, that fizzes and fades away fast.
S - The aroma is right on point, lots of big dark roasted malts, some light dark chocolate notes, a hint of woodiness, ohh and an assault of fresh roasted coffee.
T - Flavor is massive with coffee, i mean just explosive, its incredibly dark and robust, roasted malt and coffee glory.
M - One of the minor drawbacks with this beer is that the bitterrness is high, but its bold with a nice medium feel.
O - Surprisingly blown away by this beer. Is it the best coffee beer Ive ever had? No, but Id actually take a shot and say this is one of the best bold coffee foreward beers out there

I have to admit, there are those moments when I will unearth something in the Bottle Backlog and think, "Wow! This is pretty cool. I wonder why it has taken me so long to get to it?" with the answer being too many nights away rom Chez Woody accompanied by my bring back more beer upon my return. This seems like a pretty cool beer.

From the bottle: "The 9th experiment in the eXile series is a robust stout brewed with Cafe Racer XXX 865cc coffee to turbocharge it with the intense flavors & aromas of locally roasted coffee beans. X-9 is at the line; pop the top and ... pin the throttle!"; "Respect the Fluid"; "Craft Be Cherished. Rules Be Damned."

It was going to be tough to pin the throttle, but I am really good at Pop!ping the top! My gentle pour raised a finger of fizzy, deep-tan/light-brown head with moderate retention. Color was Black-Opaque (SRM = 44), but not so dark as too prevent me from seeing garnet highlights at the edges. Nose was redolent with dark roasted coffee. Mouthfeel was unexpectedly creamy. It tasted (and felt) like a dollop of coffee ice cream in my mouth. This beer really makes me nostalgic for my late Pops. He liked coffee, he would read Secret Agent X-9 to me as a kid and coffee ice cream and Rocky Road were his favorites. Every beer should be so pleasantly evocative. Finish was bittersweet (semi-sweet), and it tasted like Hershey's Special Dark, which was Pops' favorite, also. I guess that I should raise a toast to him before I finish this review. He's been gone for over fourteen years, but few are the times that I don't think of him. Prosit!

I enjoyed this 12oz in a stout glass chilled.

The color is black and opaque with thick beige head that falls to a ring with fine bead and spots of lace stick. The smell has a strong coffee aroma with decent amount of cocoa-like odors with mocha quality and light spice with vanilla type earthy accent. The feel is creamy with mild bitter bean texture with slight sweetness on the tip with medium carbonation and some spice in the semi-dry finish with medium body throughout with oils of coffee coating the mouth well.

The taste is very rich with a coffee/cocoa dominance up front with slight sweet toffee-like secondary flavors at first with light woody spice from coffee with slight fruity yeast adding a mild raisin combined with the roasted malt flavor and lots of chocolate malt in the middle with some caramel adding to the coffee flavors which have dried fruit and dark berry qualities. The taste moves to a long dark roasted coffee flavor that lingers into the finish which has a drying quality. This is a very good stout with a nice heavy coffee quality and substantial body of the stout base yet very enjoyable especially for those who like coffee in a nice standard stout, I would not hesitate to drink this again

Dark brown pour with a two finger brown head and some lacing. Nice fresh coffee smell and in the taste upfront with roasted malts mid palate and throughout the finish. Mouthfeel is light, perhaps too light for the style. Nice coffee bitter finish. Got a case on sale for $20 which i thought was a fantastic buy at this quality. Duclaw doesnt make the best beers, but i think they are a little uunderappreciated for what its all worth. Id recommend this offering

Pours a dark brown color, nearly oily, with a brownish head. Good retention and lacing, however some small chunks of sediment were seen in the bottom on the glass.

Aroma was full of strong dark roast coffee. Just a hint of malt and char behind the coffee, and perhaps just a touch of hops and bread. Has pretty decent aroma on it, enticing to coffee lovers.

The flavor has a fair amount of roast and bitterness, faint unsweetened cocoa powder, nutty elements and small malt sweetness in the finish. Well rounded and balanced in the taste. You get the coffee, malts, and earthy, slightly piney hops. Full bodied, evenly carbonated and finishes with a touch smokey, this is a solid stout brewed with coffee.

Taste is as advertised, deep roasted coffee and toasted malt. This one is good for the style as you can taste both the coffee and beer parts of the beer. Not my favorite style, but really good if you like coffee beers.

Undated bottle into pint glass. Dark almost black with a medium tan head. Chocolate and coffee dominate. The chocolate and coffee carry though to the end with virtually no residual bitterness. Decent mouthfeel - just barely thick enough to qualify as a stout in my scorebook. OK but not exceptional. Just another chocolate-coffee stout.

A: Dark black in the glass with a light tan head that seems to build up from the body of the beer.

S: Oh yeah... Rich chocolate, and wonderfully complex and dark coffee. There is a lovely coffee and cream aroma going on that I really dig.

T: Chocolate, with coffee notes. There is a little bit of a peppery note in the finish. There is a little bit of heat in this which is odd considering the mid range ABV.

M: Light in body, with fairly active carbonation.

O: Overall a good beer. I think the aroma outshines the taste, but still a pretty tasty brew.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear extremely dark brown approaching jet black in color with light to moderate amounts of gentle visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and moderate amounts of cola brown highlights. The beer has a finger tall foamy dark tan head that reduces to a mottled thin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of freshly roasted coffee and cold brewed coffee over light aromas of roasted malts.

T: Upfront there is a light to moderate flavor of roasted malts followed by a moderate to strong flavor of cold brewed coffee - great coffee flavors with little to no acidity. Light to moderate amounts of coffee bitterness which slowly fades away.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: I really enjoyed this one but I'm as big a coffee drinker as I am a craft beer drinker. Really nice coffee flavors and an easy to drink mouthfeel. Definitely would grab this one again.

A: The beer is very dark brown in color and close to being opaque—when held up to a bright light, traces of amber are visible bar the edges of the glass. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down, leaving lacing on the surface and sides of the glass and a collar around the edge.
S: Light to moderate aromas of coffee beans are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell, but has stronger flavors of coffee beans. There isn't that much in the way of bitterness or acidity.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I liked this stout and think it would be a beer that would be enjoyed by coffee lovers given its rich flavors of coffee beans in the taste. It wasn't that difficult to drink because the beer wasn't that heavy on the palate.
