This clean, clear golden IPA is medium-bodied with a thin white head, crisp mouthfeel, and moderately strong 6.5% ABV. Blood Orange Neon Gypsy blends the grapefruit, citrus, & pine notes of 7 hops with the tart sweetness of blood orange juice for a flavor profile that roams your palate long after the beer’s bittersweet finish. Now pop the top, 'cause ... it's bloody refreshing!

Very weak tasting for a blood orange IPA, it's not bad but it's not great either. Cheers! B-

Giving DuClaw Brewing a second chance (They were responsible for the reprehensibly blasphemous chocolate peanut butter porter I couldn't finish). There may be a chance for redemption, here. Neon Gypsy isa blood orange IPA, so they've added more orange flavor to the nature occurring citrus of an IPA. There's a real tang to the flavor, and by that I mean Tang. The drink of the astronauts. The hops get lost in the shiny, bright orange flavor. The color is an orange Amber, but there is a lot of sediment. For a while it was looking like the beer equivalent of a snow globe. The scent strongly precedes the flavor ... It was perceptible across the room. Subtlety is not this beer's long suit.

At least I was able to finish this.

Oddly enough I got mine at the same Havertown Giant as the last rater ...small world. Light orange amber just about see through brew with a decent white head. Really strong scent of oranges along with slight citric hops and a malty back. The taste really starts with the blood oranges and there is some malt and bittering hops in there. You get a somewhat bready malt finish that is more noticeable as it warms. It's sort of a bit astringent on the finish also. The feel is pretty creamy with medium carbonation. My biggest beef with this beer is that the blood orange doesn't blend all that well with the rest of this brew.

DuClaw Brewing Company "Blood Orange Neon Gypsy"
12 fl. oz brown glass bottle, "PKG103117 #bloody REFRESHING"
$2 @ Giant, Havertown, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Less than a month old on this one, I got lucky. It's poured a two-finger thick head of foamy off-white atop a slightly hazy amber-orange-almost-copper colored body with visible particulate in suspension. Some people don't like the floaties but they don't bother me, and the head seems to be holding up very well so there's that. The aroma definitely suggests blood orange so there's that as well. I'm not finding any hops but I like it as it is, they might be there or they might not, adding more citrus but I just don't find them. ... ... I stepped away for a moment and I've come back to find that I still have a pretty solid eighth to quarter inch head. Nice. OK, the taste again reveals blood red orange, particularly upfront, although it carries through and then lingers in the finish as well. It's definitely an IPA underneath though. I'm not sure what the IBUs might be but it's solidly bitter. As for the grain it's hard to tell as well, I'm guessing a fairly basic golden malt with just a light bit of caramel... the blood orange is just too strong to really get a take on it. It's medium to medium-light in body and crisp, which explains at least a little of the head retention, it's got some carbonation to it. Oh and I just noticed that there's some really nice lacing as well. I'm not sure how to rate the appearance given the particulate in suspension. I'd give it a 4.25 if it was clear, or even close, so I guess it deserves a 4. Overall it's somewhere around there as well. I love the blood orange, and that it's as intense as it is, but at the same time I'm not sure I'd want to have two in a row. Maybe I would, or maybe it might be a little too much for a second serving. Still, it's decent. It's something different and so it's interesting, and the citrus leaves it very refreshing.

Poured into a custom shaped grip glass: color is gold, some floating sediment, head is off white with fine bubbles.

Aroma is quite citrusy with a pithy rind like aroma, which is both from the heavy dose of citrus juice and hop selection, i would guess. Toasted malt intermingles.

Taste is similar with a bit more malt character: citrus rind and juice are noticeable, malt is toasty hint of caramel.

Mouthfeel is good with moderate carbonation and just the right amount of bitterness.

Overall a good citrus ipa with strong citrus/blood orange rind component and just enough maltiness.

12oz bottle - wow, this one's marketing shtick is a little, shall we say, tame for the course, eh?

This beer pours a clear, bright medium copper amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly ecru head, which leaves some decent disintegrating ice floe lace around the glass as it slowly sinks out of sight.

It smells of sugary orange flesh, fresh-squeezed red grapefruit juice, gritty and grainy pale malt, further lemon/lime soda notes, and some restrained leafy, weedy, and piney green hop bitters. The taste is like a weak Screwdriver with pine needles dunked into it - big orange, grapefruit, and what mainland Europe calls citron fruitiness, a hint of vodka-like booze warming, and resinous pine - all washed over some rather meek grainy and bready pale and caramel malts.

The carbonation is fairly active in its palate-coddling frothiness, the body an adequate middleweight, and generally smooth, with perhaps a touch of phenolic fruit-addled alcohol messing up the new paint job here. It finishes off-dry, and still big and fruity, the mixed citrus character really showing some sauced-up lingering legs.

Overall, this is a pleasant enough fruity and hoppy offering from this producer of big and brash brews (at least in my admittedly limited experience). Refreshing, relatively easy to drink, and with just the right amount of booziness to remind one that this isn't one for the kiddies.

Somehow got a bottle the other day, so clearly it can still be had, although I am local to the brewery. Poured into my tulip glass.

Look: Beautiful amber color, that almost reminds of a hazy apple juice. Thin white head that disappeared almost immediately and barely returns when swirled.

Smell: Fruity nose, although not as strong as Heavy Seas Tropicannon, which I feel like this beer was trying to model itself after. Not a lot of hop presence on the nose, which is rather disappointing. Smell a lot of apple and blood orange. The lack of head probably did not help get the full smell either.

Taste: Big letdown. There is only a slight hop taste on the palate and the fruit flavor is not as predominant as it is on the nose. There is also a strange finish to the beer that is not pleasant.

Feel: Basically kind of rough, despite the fact it is not a high alcohol beer at 6.5%. That strange finish does not help either. I love IPA's and their bitterness, but this just does not hit the mark in terms of being very drinkable.

Overall: Quite disappointing to be frank. I expected it to have a nice citrus pop via some peels and hops, but it just did not exactly pop with either. While there is some bitterness, it does not feel natural and just winds up being a rather unremarkable IPA. I had no idea until I reviewed this beer that it was retired, but needless to say, I can totally understand why Duclaw did that.

If you are looking for a citrus IPA in Maryland, get Heavy Seas Tropicannon or Flying Dog's Bloodline. It's not perfect, but has a strong citrus flavor and is a heck of a lot more drinkable than the Blood Orange Neon Gypsy.

I wanted to like this beer simply because I'm weak for names, labels and the idea of exotic citrus which is what prompted this impulse buy.

I liked the golden hue, the scent was orange/grapefruit/pine, and the initial taste pulled my pallet, citrus to piney, bittersweet with a lingering metallic "piney" tinge....I'm not a fan of such an after taste which would make me inclined not to drink it again. I support its retirement.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish tulip

L: Clear medium golden-copper pour. 1 finger of foamy white head. Nice lacing. Looks solid.

S: Citrus.. blood orange... and citrus. Did I mention citrus?

T/F: Some grains up front and the dominant flavor is a somewhat off-putting orange/citrus mashup. A bit earthy... not a lot of hop complexity, and any bitterness is lost in the sweet juice. The blood orange dominates the flavor... and not in a good way. Medium to thin in body... good carbonation, finish is orange and semi-sweet.

O: Not my thing and wouldn't get it again. Too much 'blood orange' and not enough 'IPA'.
