DuClaw Brewing Co. "Sour Me This"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "PKG052317" and sampled on 082317
$2.17 @ Giant Eagle, Indiana, PA

Look: A slightly hazy yellow gold body rests gently beneath a short head of bright white that fades almost immediately. Limited, spotty lacing - but that's to be expected of a sour beer.
Smell: Clean. Tartish with light notes of citrus (lemon, grapefruit, tangerine) and other tropical fruits (mango, guava, papaya).
Taste: Also clean. Tart but not too sour, and sweetish but not sweet. Fruity with candied citrus, some tropical fruit, and some light berries. Limited bitterness but dry, acidic finish. Nicely balanced.
Feel: Light-medium in body and gently zesty.
Overall: Interesting, refreshing, and perfectly balanced for middle of the road tartness and drinkability.

As I continue to winnow through the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody, I am finding beers that I do not even remember purchasing! In fact, I have so many DuClaw beers hanging around that I am embarking on a horizontal tasting for the next few days. This should be interesting.

From the bottle: "This light-bodied, straw-colored sour boasts, tart, candied fruit-like notes of tangerine, orange, and melon that linger to its sweet, dry finish. Now pop that top, & get ready for a ... PUCKER PUNCH!"; "Respect_the_Fluid".

I Pop!ped the cap, but I decided to go with a gentle pour since I could not find a bottling date on the neck. No worries there as its intense, inherent carbonation formed a dense, one finger cap of eggshell-white head with excellent retention. Color was solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was quite salty (and you may take that from a retired U.S. Navy sailor) with a lemony tang that combined to cause my lips to slightly pucker. Mouthfeel was medium, but well-carbonated, giving it a fizziness on the tongue & in the mouth. I have to agree with their mention of "tangerine, orange, and melon" but do not let that mislead you! It was far from "sweet" and was probably one of the more sour, NOT tart, beers that I have had in a while. In addition to the aforementioned flavors, it was also quite acidic and biting with lots of lemon and salt flavors. Man, it was like liquid alum had been poured into my mouth! I could barely unpucker for the next sip. I usually like to have water standing by when drinking tart & sour beers and I was thankful that I had pre-staged some before I started in with this beer. Finish was intensely dry, very sour, very puckering. You can probably infer that I am not a fan of tart & sour beers, but I do not rate to taste. This was certainly an experience & if such is your bag, you will want to give this a shot.

Appearance: Pours a clear goldenstraw with a frothy head that leaves some splashes of lace

Smell: Lactic tones of orange with a hint of honeydew

Taste: Lactic tones build from the outset with bitterness building through the middle, where the hops deliver an orange element; the sweeter honeydew flavor arrives after the swallow and is a nice complement to the sour and bitter aspects of the beer

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: For a brewery not known for its sour program (at least to me) this is a darn nice and creative beer; not sure why this is categorized as a Berliner Weisse andthe brewery does not identify it as such on their website

Initially, I wasn't sure what style this was supposed to be, but knowing now that it is supposed to be a Berliner Weiss helps. Now I can say it is one of the bolder ones, with sour tastes up front.

It pours pale and deep yellow with nice fizz that continues. The aroma is weak but fairly typically yeasty. The taste is dominated by sour, but perhaps somewhat balanced and moderated by malts and hops. It works, but it is a bigger pucker up than many of the style.

Recommended.

A: The beer is relatively clear straw yellow in color and has a moderate to high amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high bright white head that died down, leaving a patch of bubbles on the surface, a collar around the edge, and some specks of bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of sourness are present in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste is quite sour and has notes of lemons and orange flavors. The sourness lingers into the finish.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and provides a nice dose of sourness that will pucker up your mouth to some degree.

Pours a hazed golden straw color. The aroma has some sour grain and slight citrus hop notes. The flavor has a nice sourness to without being over the top. Balance of some wheat malt and perhaps lactobacillus. Acetic but on par for style. This one is nice to drink. Light to medium bodied sour ale that delivers on the sourness.

Pours clear, light gold in color, with 1/3 inch head. Taste is big citrus, tangerine, lemon, and orange with light sour mix. Slightly sour, light bodied with moderate carbonation. This makes for a great intro to sours. Not as sour as some European versions of the style, but very easy to approach. Makes for a great beach beer.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/20/2016. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy pale golden/yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tart/sour lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit, mango, melon, papaya, guava, orange zest, wheat, and cracker; with light notes of honey, hay, grass, lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/acidic yeast, citrus/tropical hops, and moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tart/sour lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit, mango, melon, papaya, guava, orange zest, wheat, and cracker; with light notes of honey, hay, grass, lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Moderate lactic tart/sourness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour lemon, lime, tangerine, grapefruit, mango, melon, papaya, guava, orange zest, wheat, cracker, light hay/funk, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, citrus/tropical hops, and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/sourness balance, and zero astringent/puckering sourness after the finish. Moderate dryness from acidity. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with very smooth and moderately crisp/grainy/acidic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.8%. Overall this is a great dry hopped Berliner weisse. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, citrus/tropical hops, and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink with the balanced acidity. Very bright and flavorful on hop/yeast flavors; with a solid balancing malt backbone. A very enjoyable offering.

Pours straw yellow, thin frothy head. Smells like granny smith apples on the verge of fermenting and slightly acidic, almost the 'nose feel' you would get from smelling vinegar, without the vinegar smell however.

Taste is very tart. Starts with a taste of a lemon sour patch kid that was sprinkled in salt. Really this follows front to back. Interestingly though long after each sip you're left with a malty aftertaste that taste like malt, salt, and corn adjunct. It actually reminds me of fresh corn in the summer, which I could see this pairing well with.

The mouthfeel is extremely fizzy and carbonated. The full erupting feel complements the acidity well.

Overall. I'm no expert in any style if sours, but this was an enjoyable brew for a even a novice like myself.
